  1. Thanks chaps! Good to know what the knobs and flaps do... steady... I'll check the various bits you mentioned Richard. Clive - when you say turn the thermostat down, how exactly would I do that? Ben
  2. Two parts to this question: (1) I've just had some wiring fixed around the Kenlowe electric fan (on my 1977 Spitfire 1500) and I'm wondering if the electrician has set it up to kick in early enough - the temp guage now shows just over three quarters before the fan kicks in. It then runs until the guage shows just below three quarters. It used to kick in just above half way on the guage and that was good for peace of mind. But maybe it's fine for the engine temperature to sit at around three quarters? (2) When I was in traffic yesterday I tried to dissapate a bit of heat by opening up the heater in cabin, but then I realised I don't REALLY know how the heater works - for the left knob the labels from left to right are "CAR DEFROST FULL MAX OFF" "Defrost" and "Off" are pretty obvious, but the others are more ambiguous! Can anyone elighten me?? (The other knob on the right is obviously just a temperature slider!). Cheers!
  3. Didn't see your question till now, sorry Peter. I'm told there was plenty of grease on the needle rollers so it's still a mystery...
  4. Thanks Kevin. I'm not completely clear on the anatomy (I've got someone qualified doing the work who hasn't got time to talk me through it today) but he's said the drive shaft has been scored where it meets the bearings, so from what you've said it might be that the drive shaft has destroyed the inner bearings... The weird thing is that the drive shaft was replaced in June 2014 along with the bearings and all the other bits you'd expect (UJ, vertical link, stone guard, trunnion etc.) - I've got it here in the service history... To break after only a year we have assumed it was either dodgy parts or dodgy workmanship. Any other ideas?
  5. Can anyone recommend a supplier for quality parts? Discovered some dodgy wheel bearings have disintegrated after only a year on the off side rear of my Spitfire. Also looking at replacing my Moto-Lita leather steering wheel (13"/flat/holes) with a 14" wooden dished example. If I sell the Moto-Lita on eBay it looks like I'll make the amount needed to buy a new unbranded wooden steering wheel like this: http://tinyurl.com/pbahzrz Does anyone have any experience on the quality of these unbranded steering wheels? And is there anywhere better to buy/sell than eBay? Ben
  6. Thanks chaps. Noted. No one has yet recommended a good supplier, but I'll see if there's anything else on the forum about it. Might be able to combine it with another post I was about to put up in 'General' actually...
  7. Just had a call from my relative who's doing the work - it's exactly what you predicted Doug - wheel bearings shot to pieces on the driver's side despite appearing normal when the wheel was on the car. The only mystery remaining is that the whole assembly on that side of the car was replaced only a year ago (before I owned it) by a different garage... Maybe just a bodged job. Looks like I've also got a noisy leaf spring and possibly a knocking from the exhaust too. All good fun eh?
  8. Thanks guys - Canleys webpage didn't shed any light unfortunately, but helpful nonetheless - many thanks. Interesting point about the wheel bearings from dougbGT6 - I'll pursue that first. Will report back. Ben
  9. Would be so grateful for some advice on this. Concerns my Triumph Spitfire 1500 (1977). Getting a noise as the title suggests - not a rhythmical, consistent knocking sound, it's a more random crunching/clattering sound which doesn't seem to be related to speed/particular gears/cornering/braking. I expected to find something loose getting caught up in the drivetrain somewhere, like you would expect a bag of bolts going round and round one of the rotating parts to sound, but again there's nothing immediately obvious visually. Really baffled. I've ruled out UJs, wheel bearings and prop shaft. The diff would be the obvious candidate but it's already been reconditioned (by a specialist firm) recently after becoming worn and producing the classic rhythmic knocking sound. The guy who reinstalled the diff (mechanic relation of mine) assures me that he doesn't believe this NEW noise is coming from there. But after poking around he is talking about checking the leaf spring first and seeing if anything stems from that, but I just can't see how a rotational sort of noise could be anything do do with the leaf spring or suspension... I fully agree there may be another noise coming from the suspension at the moment, but I think it's two separate issues. Can anyone advise on the right course of action before I go on an expensive wild goose chase?! If anyone is near Eastbourne and thinks they might be able to lend an expert opinion, let me know! Or if anyone recommends a specialist near Eastbourne that could also be very helpful. Cheers Ben
  10. Hi chaps, I'm getting a similar problem to Dave with my Spitfire 1500 but Pete Lewis makes a very good point above - it's not a rhythmical knocking sound for me, it's a random crunching/clattering sound which doesn't seem to be related to speed/particular gears/cornering/braking. Like Dave I expected to find something loose getting caught up in the drivetrain somewhere, like you would expect a bag of bolts going round and round one of the drive shafts to sound, but again there's nothing immediately obvious visually. Really baffled. I've ruled out UJs, wheel bearings and prop shaft.
