I had a bad experience with my 1500 Herald which had waterless coolant in it from day 1 after an expensive rebuild, the head cracked and coolant mixed with oil, rather than mayo, the whole engine had jelly like stuff everywhere and had to be completely taken apart and cleaned before another rebuild. That was 4 life from the club shop.Yes i know it shouldn`t mix with oil but that`s my experience. Water and AF for me from now on. Steve

GT6 Starting issues, or ist it just me?

I have been through at least 3 modern pumps, all rubbish, the levers have sharp edges and pressure is too high, that`s why i went electric. Steve -
New GT6 MK2 Purchase - The journey of improving it further!

I think with the supposed engine spec he has(PH2 cam,10.5:1CR etc)the HS6 will work better if setup correctly Pete.I have them on my 2.5 Vitesse and they are fine.I think the GT6 would further benefit from a decent 6-3-1 manifold. Steve- 333 replies

New GT6 MK2 Purchase - The journey of improving it further!

I would say the breathing is not sufficient, the catch tank is too small and is below the level of the rocker outlet.i suggested either doing away with the tank and go back to original or converting to electric fuel pump and use the blank as an extra breather, thats what I did on my 1500 Herald. New GT6 MK2 Purchase - The journey of improving it further!

So i had a look over the GT6 yesterday for the new owner,i hope he doesn`t mind me posting my opinion. It is a really nice looking car and looks to have had tons of work done, including engine work. Issues are, there is wayyy too much oil at the top of the engine,i thought it must have an external feed but it doesn`t ,it has the rocker vent going to a small catch tank on the bulkhead, then the other side of the catch tank goes to one of the small round filters which is sitting on the chassis by the bulkhead. Oil seems to be coming out of the pinhole in the filler cap, then running down the back of the engine, visible oil all over the rear of the head. Also oil on the chassis coming from the catch tank filter. The carb vent inlets are joined together with a length of braided hose. There is a vacuum take off from the inlet manifold which used to go to a vacuum guage in the car,(now removed). Vacuum connection on the carbs is open(nothing connected). Condition of brake master/discs all look good but,as reported they don`t stop the car,it feels like poor pads to me, and rear setup. The throttle pedal is way heavy due to what looks like a bed spring attached the the inlet manifold.i am surprised it hasn`t snapped the cable. It has HS6 carbs and a Kent cam(PH2)?,and estimated CR of 10.5:1,but has standard needles and the original cast exhaust manifold. The steering column has movement from the bush ,but also moves side to side, something going on with the bracing. It has Blue poly bushes throughout,if you turn the steering when stationary the rack moves about 10mm side to side, seems to be the bushes being too soft. The engine feels like it has a lot more to give. All in all a nice car with a some easily fixable issues. Steve- 333 replies

I can echo Clives and Nigels comments,my 2.5 Vitesse has standard brakes with Mintex pads and will stop well and even lock up with enough leg,as i found out when overtaking cyclist on a Yorkshire tour a couple of years ago, then seeing a motor bike coming towards me. I do my own mechanicals on my cars,i am working at Surrey Quays on Monday and Tuesday if you would like me to have a look over it before you start throwing money at it,PM me. Steve- 333 replies

Potential New GT6 Owner - Anyone recognize the car?
Steve P replied to avivalasvegas's topic in General
That engine spec spec shows a fairly hairy TLD cam and high-ish CR,even though it says "approximately". Should be fairly rapid, just stick to 99 Octane fuel or it will pink and run on like crazy,i only use Shell V Power in my Vitesse. Steve -
Not even sure what the rules are here,i did see a Spit 1500 out yesterday near me.(Surrey) S

For that money i would want the door to fit better than that last picture. S

Was that just before selling the car with "low mileage" Colin?. Steve

I was advised to fit one to my Herald 1500 with a tuned new engine which had Goodparts roller rockers, even with a 1mm hole it filled the rocker box with oil which then filled the catch tank i had for venting. Could have been blow by by a not ideal break in process but still,0.8 or less i reckon. BTW my engine grenaded after 500 miles with water in bore no 2. Steve

Mine only works on position 2 if you waggle the switch about,i need to try and clean it or take it apart. Steve

My Vitesse metal pickup pipe doesn`t seem to be attached to anything,i can move it about 2 inches upwards.Maybe the olive has disapperared?. Steve

I put petrol in my other halfs 2007 2.2 diesel Honda CR-V twice, once got it pumped out at a cost of £185,second time in Great Yarmouth, i realised after about 15 quid,i thought sod it and topped up to full with Diesel.Ran like it was pinking for a while, but fine after another top up. I asked Honda and they said it would need a new pump for 2K!.No thanks. Sold it three years ago with only 60k miles on it but running fine. Steve

Front suspension investigations
Steve P replied to Steve P's topic in Chassis, Suspension & Steering
Interesting thread on Sideways there, with contributions from GT I was reading on the Merlin website, they say Avo`s with polybushes are not suitable for use if the shock isn`t upright or near upright. They also do the bearing conversion for about £10 a side,no spacers though. I have fitted new bushes which are a tad narrower than original, now the tube protrudes 1mm each side. Will keep an eye on it. I think the top plates may have been ovalled when i had Spax on it,i remember on the 2012 RBRR the top nut came off and the shock jumped out of the plate. Steve -
Having stripped down the front nearside on the Vitesse after hearing knocking,i found the following: Wishbone bushes knackered, bottom Avo shock bush mullered and the spring top plates have a large oval hole in them. Top plates may be older but the rest has only done a few thousand miles. There is a conversion for spherical bearings instead of polybushes for the Avo`s,but they say it makes the ride worse and more vibration through the suspension. Rebuild one side tomorrow. Steve

You need the spacer with both, you don,t need the bulkhead mounted solenoid with the hi torque one,i would try it on the bench with jump leads to make sure the starter is working and then check the ring gear. Steve

My Spal on the Vitesse is wired to keep going after the engine is turned off, when i put it in the garage the fan normally runs for a couple of minutes if it`s been idling. Steve

Hello Iain, 3.27 built my Mike P. Steve

Does the Spal one not fit top left on the rad?. Mine does but the water pump pulley is about 10mm away from the edge of the fan. Steve

I have the Saloon box in my Vitesse as well, pulls like a train but never been near 100mph as it`s scary.Pulls up hills in O/D 4th no problem. Steve

I used heavy duty roofing felt and then fishtale shingles on my 18 x 12 wooden man shed, still good 2 years in and it looks nice (Green shingles). Quite a ball ache to fit them though, and messy with the tar for the joints. Steve
