  1. if the rubber body is sound and still attached to the mount plate any flaking around the edges is

    quite normal

as said its easy to find the replacements are worse than the old ones

  2. a steel spacer its likely from the reverse shaft

if you fit the OD and dont turn the cam to its lowest point the pump roller assy can get bent

its best to drop the pump , the cam has achamfer to lead the roller on but it can cause troubles

most failures on a recent refit is down to the cam woodruff key has been left out .

  3. its is general practice you dont get a washer under the head as the head should be held and the nut

has to be tightened  hence to aid the turning of the nut a washer is added

some washers are there if some sort of reinforcement of the face is designed

its quite a practical move to fit two short bolts rather than trying to locate and insert to one long one

    all down to your preferences

  4. use of bolts is a fairly often fix when the orig studs have sheared  the stud holes are drilled out and a bolt used , disadvantage is you need two hands and two spanners to do the bolts/nuts up tight.

generally you use brass/gunmetal nuts on exhaust flanges as they dont rust and corrode with the heat  but noy essential.

  5. one thing we have not mentioned is please check that after using choke that the jet does fully return

to its adjusting nut    SU choke controls are a mishmash of hopeless rods and levers

a quick prod with the finger to give the jet a poke will test if its going to pop back up or ..its all ok

  6. running rich will cause hot restart problems

lean it off 1/2 a turn and see if the plug colour improves

use of choke will take a good few hot miles to clear the soot.

on the 1600 spartan is this on strombergs or downdraft solex carbs ??

one thing to always check is the coil wired polarity correct ??   ie neg to dizzy pos to ign switch

  7. has the car stood for ages   rings can get gummed up with lack of use .

often a good dose of redex in the plug hole and left for a few days can make a cheap improvement

but will make clouds of smoke when you restart it

  8. its also worth checking no filter gaskets are obstructing the front face ports of the carbs

there should be inside the rocker cover a metal gauze needs the retainer prizing open to extract it and wash in petrol

a check of the diaphragm is worthwhile if its wrinkled a wash in petrol will revert it to size

the diaphragm has location lugs to correctly position the air piston

when was the filter last changed ???

as for mixture from level with the jet housing 3 turns down is a good start setting

tight valve clearances do have a big effect on idle quality

  9. a question  where on earth did the cupfull of water come from to get in the sump

    it /doubt   wont be condensation

light staining a rub with an oily rag .......you need to see the state of cranks left outside to normalise

i nice big magnet taped to the oil filter always seems agood idea

  10. it seems you need to fully bleed the slave .

firstly the bleed nipple must be on the top of the feed pipe

to expell all the air trapped  you need to remove the slave and push the piston in as far as it will go

rebleed , then a few pedal strokes to reposition the piston once the slave is refitted

have a bleed tube held up high above the slaves height to ensure bubbles go upwards.

moving the cylinder fixed point is never going to work as the piston can sit anywhere in the cyllinder

so it compensates for disc wear .moving the cyl does not reposition the piston

  11. but start with the idle screw , if that makes an easy test .

once you get it hot and she idles you can adjust the mixture ,

if you take a look at the diaphragm  if its wrinkled and wont go back nicely  wash it in petrol it will resume its correct shape

  12. any lucas acr type will fit  as a swap, if the case is handed you can rotate the halves to

    get the correct lug handing

always make sure the split tube in the rear lug is midpositioned to allow for expansion or you

break the lug off quite quickly

most will have 2 x 30amp blades and one 17 amp to power the warning lamp ...quite normal

  13. i am beginning to think everything was better in the Old Days

in the 60/70s i dont remember any pot holes , you could go for tootle on a sunday

not bang and crash round the roads

after 65 its all down hill ...but how far  ???

before i was 78 i could put me socks on without swearing

    Pete

  14. remember its a tv program made not to be questioned ,

worrying that some simple facts are easily obtained from any club or supplier but they dont do any

homework  . same as any film with steam loco's involved where they intermix all the lner.lms gwr southern all on on trip

on the footage detectives they questioned why so many old prewar cars had only one headlamp

working      i remember that was common on dip of the day .

guess we should be pleased its not Russian TV

well the suns out for a change

  15. bit like the millennium clock  ....nothing happened

in 20 years of triumphing i have never experienced stale fuel ,or dissolving carbs,

but have found crap hoses on many to be the only culprit  as we have seen for some years on this forum .

just to add the pump hoses on my 2000 are as far as i can see are original and perfectly sound

built to a specification designed by triumph .

most of the fleabay and local factors hose is a chinese fake rubbish .

the club shop do sell gates barricade as do many others   use that

never the unbranded Ooo it got R9 printed on it ...its just going to give you the dreaded rubber slivers
