  3. there is a previous posting about the thicker cup washers on a rotaflex Pete
  4. idea ....can you add the castle nut to the outer end and put in a vice as its off the car ??? tighten the nyloc then when locked in the taper remove the castle nut pete
  5. it could be less but there needs some float to accommodate variations in heat Pete
  6. if its all clean the taper of the stub does normally lock up enough to torque the nyloc nut Pete
  7. and with many of the remote kits the spherical washer is cropped with sharp edges that unless its fettles before fitting can mince the new ball in days pete
  8. if the groove is not well defined the clip will jump out, you may reform the circlip but a new one is best , if you have a dremmel a cutting disc can reprofile the groove. pete
  9. if you don't have the short spacer you show the stay arm will foul the tank and hold the lid up out of line there are a few Tee shirts on that little bracket Pete
  10. is it possible to insert some hard card/plastic/feeler shim to make the tapered latch to open Pete
  11. agree but if the alloy remote housing or the spherical ball has worn badly then the ball sits too low Pete
  12. i have a stripped down unit and the screw just blanks the hole has nowt to do with locating anything to strip just ! remove the corked in welch plug and it all comes apart it would aid life if its lubricated , and must have the 7/16" washer fitted between angle drive and speedo pinion hsg. or you pre load it and failure is imminent Pete pinion
  13. fitchetts do have a website as its maintained by your club to support the brown smock card index system they use . yes its limited to not everything IE the parts listed is a bit selected Pete
  14. yes but as it is convoluted you can squeeze it up to access the rack bush end if it slides up the track rod , just pull it back when done there is no greaser , its hands on job Pete
  15. well that keeps you out of mischief Pete
  16. if you undo the sleeve nut on the suction tube it all comes out the tank so you can attack any blockage its only curved length of bundy as for a spitty tank you need to see if you have room on the deck to make a filler hole Pete
  17. when we had a jumbo compressor we added a air drier and an automatic water dump valve from our truck fraternity available from any truck factors Pete
  18. if you win its brilliant but 5000 tickets at £6 makes them £30,000 pete
  19. if you find you have a recessed block do not get a Payen gasket see my post on the troubles we encountered the gasket from canley classics was perfect Pete
  20. I have always used an off cut from the carpet leftovers nice bit of wool adds a bit of quality Pete
  21. it is also worth pull the N/S gaiter off and manually grease the rack as this end is lubed for life the rack and the end bush go dry the rack greaser (normally plugged ) needs a niple fitting this lubes the pinion and the rack damper the damper shoe just rubs on the back of the rack this is where incorrect shims will overide the spring and cause dead /stiff feeling you need to plod through all the ideas on here as these problems/solutions can be very varied . Pete
  22. some thoughts rack damper has had too many shims removed to reduce free play has a repro modern UJ been fitted in the column and its seized lack of oil in the trunnions use ep 90 never use grease lack of grease in the rack (may need a nipple fitted) low tyre pressures modern tyres need more than the manual PSI add 4 to 6 psi extraa squirt of lube in the top column bush should solve the squeal the cancelling can be failed switch ,the clip on the column is located by a dimple, so its not really movable the column may be mispositioned on the UJ or rack to set the lug on the clip to 3 oclock Pete
  23. there is some weird ideas that one size fits all dont know why a 948 is differing but certainly 4cyl and 6 cyl racks have different ratios the 6 cyl input shaft has a groove machined in the spline to identify the slower rack some may like a 4cy ratio on a 6pot but you will need 6 shreaded wheat to park the engine ground anchor Pete
  24. providing you keep each track rod the same length and set the Toe to the book and that spec would be static laden with 150lbs on each seat you will have the designed handling. and whilst its laden check the rear toe easy to set the toe
