  1. Thanks for the extra tips guys, I opted to pay extra for a Payen gasket and presumed there would be no need for anything extra to help makes seal, after flushing the old oil and running for a hundred or so miles I'll re torque and check for oil seepage rate than remove the head against this stage. I am grateful for the advice.
  2. Cheers, I got help on that from my mate Google.
  3. Peter, it's been a while since I posted and I remember how helpful you were when I got the car a couple of years ago, your'e a life saver, many thanks.
  4. Hi all, I recently had my head gasket go on my GT6 that has a 2000 engine instead of an original GT6. I used the engine number to buy the correct head set and bought a payen gasket. After a good clean and light inlet matching and cleaning job I've now got the head back on but a bit stuck for head nut torques. My book is GT6 & Vitesse and has 3 different torques for them models. It seems the 6 cylinder engine configs all have different torques but I'm struggling to find the correct torque anywhere on the net. Is it possible anyone can help please? The head nut and rocker cam nut torques would be really helpful. Next job will be to convert lb foot to Newtons.
  5. Thanks for your help Pete, I tackled the Overdrive wiring this morning and after another few hours work doing other stuff went for a test drive down a coastal road and overdrive works great in 3rd and 4th. It comes out of 3rd instantly but has a 15-20 second delay coming out of 4th which I don't consider to be a problem. That's one more step done.
  6. Reverse is left and forward Pete, I suppose if it was the original gearbox it should be a D type because the J type was an earlier gearbox on the GT6 if I'm right? So it appears I don't have much original GT6 mechanics. This could become complicated until I learn more about the make up of the car. Thanks again Pete.
  7. Thanks Pete, to my rescue again. I'm a little confused as to what gearbox and overdrive I have now as my solenoid is on the passenger side. Now I do know from the engine number that it's from a Triumph 2000 so does this mean the gearbox could also be from something other than the GT6 do you think? Now I know at least why the reverse lights were not working and I installed a switch on the dash instead. At least now I know which switch is which I have a starting point thanks.
  8. I did read through this section before asking but found nothing to answer my problem. I bought my GT6 after it had been off the road for 8 years and part restored. It has taken me ages to work through what the previous owner either didn't get round to or ran out of patience. It's now on the road and driving fairly well but the overdrive electrics are a bit of a puzzle to me even after looking at many diagrams and workshop manual. My gearbox starting from the bell housing has a switch mounted on the top left hand side looking forwards, then under the gear lever remote there is another switch finally is the solenoid mounted rearward low down. The solenoid was the only thing with any wires going to it apart from the gear lever switch. What I can't suss out is which of the two switches is the OD inhibitor and which is the reverse light switch and how to wire them both correctly. I have a downloaded diagram but I'm struggling. Does anyone have a picture of how theirs is wired to make things really simple for me please?
  9. Thanks again Clive, I wouldn't have considered that. I did plan on getting the fuel lines in the pre-packed 1m kits from a motor factors and I presume they would be for modern fuels, of course after closer inspection over the weekend I may decide to do from the tank to the carbs right through and may need a full kit as I don't know just how much work the previous owner has done and sometimes it's safer to do it yourself to be sure it is right.
  10. Good shout Doug, I think for the price of a hose set I should replace the lot, I already decided to do all the fuel lines and will probably overhaul the full braking system as the brake master cylinder is empty so there is a problem somewhere. I also thought the cowl at the front of the rad looked out of place and it is somehow bolted through the radiator! I'm in no rush so will be sure to check everything over methodically, the engine has a reground crank and new pistons and runs very sweet. The feeling I got from the previous owner of 10 years is he had spent a fair bit of time and money but not had any fun time so I suppose a lot of niggley bits is a lot to face for some. I did a lot of similar jobs recently on a Midget with 22 MOT fails and although it will be frustrating at times I am sure the GT6 will be well worth it. I think it was wise to join the club, there's plenty of reference material and help.
  11. Thanks John, I have found that book on Amazon so will order it to go with my Haynes manual and GT6 gold portfolio book, I reckon between them three I should get all the help I need. The link Clive provided for the thermostat housing seems a good price and it seems to be in stock but many thanks for the offer. Of course I will keep the other one just in case I experience the air lock issue.
  12. Brilliant, many thanks, I'll get one found and ordered. I have the feeling this is just the first of many make do parts on the car.
  13. Hi guys, please forgive me if this seems a very simple problem I should have solved myself. Hopefully I can attach a photo to help. Basically I have just purchased a GT6 MK3 and in the process of going through everything to put it back on the road after 7 years of being off the road. I am scanning all the topics carefully before asking questions but being new to the forum may miss some topics. Tonight I fired the engine up and filled the cooling system to check all the hoses for leaks etc. What's a little puzzling for me is that there seems to be nowhere for the hose that comes from the radiator filler to go to, there is an obvious overflow pipe and bottle missing but I'm sure the larger hose should go somewhere. I searched for pictures of the engine bay and found some thermostat housings have 2 hose facilities but some have just 1, if mine had 2 then the hose would have somewhere to go. Any help would be welcomed, I don't want to run the engine too much without this being solved first.
