You'd prefer the London Assembly to be spending significant sums of money on some rigid, inflexible system that would need to be completely rebuilt (at the same full cost of building the current system) should a future Mayor want to change things?

My concern is not with TFL developing their own in-house system if it is to save money,  it's what the current Mayor's future plans are for its use. In my opinion, to build in system flexibly so that other forms of charging based on distance could be catered for equates to pay per mile, which I believe the current mayor, if re-elected will eventually introduce.

  2. https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-1983-2223

This TFL site disappeared at the end of last year, basically a recruitment page looking to find people to help develope software for ANPR charging systems currently outsourced until 2026. Site was "under maintenance" for several months never to reappear. Nothing to do with the upcomming mayoral elections?

Somebody requested details through the FOI act. I have always thought that the introduction of London wide ULEZ cameras would be just the start of various ways to raise money from motorists, and that Pay per mile would one day be introduced by the current Mayor. He has denied this. End of the first paragragh states.

"The Detroit platform has the capability to be extended and we will be looking to build the system flexibly so that other forms of charging based on distance, vehicle type, etc., could be catered for if a decision was made in future to do so".  That sounds like pay per mile to me which personally I am not in favour of. Time will tell.

  3. Not currently A paid up member so don't have access to the club events, but been attending SEM for many years.

Just seen the News that "The UK's busiest motorway will close again, this time between Junction 9 for Leatherhead and Junction 10 for the A3. The closure will be put in place from 9pm on Friday 10 May and will last until 6am on Monday 13 May."

Beleive it's the weekend of SEM 2024. Not impossible for me to find other routes than the M25, but can imagine its going to be busy.

BMW make the kind of cars Triumph would be making today, had the company survived.

Agree, Triumph was leading the way  Sprint etc. Great shame. I like BMW's  generally and would be tempted to get e46 300d touring, but out of the question now, due to ULEZ expansion.

  5. My mk2 Vitesse along with nurmerous Heralds and Vitesses  I've owned have never had boot carpets, but either fitted with a rubber ribbed liner or textured pvc and backing, with popers that attach to the boot floor. More practicle, carpet will inevitably get wet/damp.

  6. I went through this s while ago. My Vitesse is modified, engine gearbox moved back, J type overdrive etc. I tried all sorts, to cure a rumble, vibration. I do have a shortened prop which i had made in a smaller diameter, but thicker tube due too very little clearance between prop and hand brake/tunnel, as soon as you start trying to alter engine gearbox layout and prop angles.  Much better now, but not perfect.

  7. I've owned a Sip direct drive 3hp 14cfm 10 Fad 150 ltr tank for probably 30 years. Ok for spraying, got a large sandblast cabinet, works, but they use a lot of air and it's a very slow process, not like you might visualise. The compressor will run air tools to a certain degree, but again, DA sanders, grinders use a lot of air, so I stick with electric power tools. Another thing to consider is the noise a compressor makes. If I was 30 years younger I would have probably looked at 3 phase, but would imagine that would be expensive to install. You can get by with a 3hp compressor on a basic DIY level definately enough for a spray gun, but it wouldn't be able to supply enough air for say an air fed mask at the same time.

  8. As above, I had a leaky Hs6 on my Vitesse, new needle valves. Not immediately apparent, but it was some form of debris, grain of sand size, probably rubber that was the cause. By the time investigated the float lid, needle valve was prestine, clean and working  but the evidence had passed through and was in the bottom of the float chamber. Have a very close look in the float chamber and dig around with a scribe. Check the mesh in the fuel pump also to see what's been caught.

  9. Just been through this process on my van. Convinced for the last few years that I had bought a dud battery as it went flat in cold weather if unused for a few says. John D suggested a parasitic  drain, which I had really dismissed. With the earth lead disconected I bridged between the earth lead and negative battery post with a 12v test screwdriver. With everything off, surprise, surprise, the 12 volt (cheap Halfords type) test screw driver illuminated. For some reason I don't understand, the light pulsed. Pulled each fuse alternator etc. One at a time.

Long story short  it was the radio at fault.

Lesson learnt 'again' don't assume anything.

  10. Unfortunately a lot of future classics like mk3 escorts early golfs mx5 etc. that fall between 1983 and early 2000's depending on model, full fail of London's ULEZ and thousands of perfectly good cars are being cashed in. This will ultimately make the remaining  cars more scarce. Along with the cost for a 17 year old just to get on the road, diy car repair/restoration will continue to die out, which is a real shame. I learnt at 17 how to fix my car in the road from a Haynes manual out in all weathers, but my mates did the same. Wouldnt have dreampt of taking it to a garage, could never have afforded to. I've restored several cars over the years only because of the skills I've learnt over the years. I encouraged nephews to repair their own cars, buying one a classic mini when he was twelve to work on, now in his thirties he's alwas been happy to take on his own repairs.  I've put my mk1 Eunos in mothballs for another seven years, when as long as they don't change the rules will become historic.

  11. This is what I used on my Vitesse replicating the original insulation. I attached the insulation inside the tunnel cover with contact adhesive and home made staple/ clips through thefibreglass cover so no chance it could drop down and melt on the exhaust, somthing to bear in mind.

    Photo bottom of thread.

You can still buy the vinyl about £40 using your old one as a template . I

Thanks for that. I would like to replicate the welded seams, but the machine to do that are pobably prohibitively expensive. I will definately make my own if that's the price they go for, gt6 versions iam sure would go for more. Only need to replace the outer vinyl. If a complete gt6 mk2 roof came up at a reasonable price I would be tempted to delete the sun roof altogether, lot easier to do on the Vitesse/ Herald.

  13. I've got to look at the sunroof on my Mk2 Gt6. Not opened it in years for fear of not being able to close it or the vinyl tearing. Very stiff despite oil/grease on the runners, so must be the sliders worn. Car has lived outside in the 20 years I've owned it. It was only a couple of months ago I notice a new split, then realized it was being caused by the metal pieces rusting and festering away, expanding under the vinyl causing a tear. The more I looked the more bumps I could see and feel. I'll need to research if I can get new vinyl, last time I looked they weren't available, think they're an odd size on the Gt6,  wider than they are long. I should be able to fabricate new metal work. The inside roof lining, last time I looked was in good nick, but that may have changed by now.

  14. Shame nobody's remade them in the original card type material. The one on my mk3 Spit is still usable 50+ years on, plyable, dense matetial, naturally  sound deadening, and fit.  Repaired them in the past on a Vitesse and on another Spit with PVA glue/newspaper papier mache. If anyone still has their original don't throw it if it's cracked/ broken, its straight forward to repair.

  15. In my experience I think you will be lucky to buy tyres nowadays that last more than a few years before hairline cracks start to appear between the treads. Sitting on the same spot, lack of use,  out in the elements kill today's tyres in my opinion. Be good to actually wear a set of tyres out before they degrade. Next set I buy will be road/ track day tyres soft compound for that reason.
