  1. Thank you for your help and advice. When the stub axle carrier broke, the clever AA chap jacked the bottom wishbone up, "fitted" the carrier back together and then strapped the two wishbones together with ratchet straps. This allowed me to creep the short distance home.
  2. The Haynes manual for the Spitfire (chapter 11 item 9 in respect of the front suspension) notes "if the stub axle must be separated from the carrier, a press will be required" and then "refitting is a reversal of removal". Does this mean that the stub axle has to be pressed into the stub axle carrier or will the tightening of the nut be adequate. I shall be using a new stub axle carrier (yes, it did break) and a new stub axle (no, it won't press out).
