  1. Sorry to hear of your situation, I have similar. May I suggest, that you trawl the Archived postings? over the year`s others have had to engage the services of repairers who specialise. I do all mine myself, but I have access to an older mechanic with his own workshop locally, still working, with his own classics, who understands that older cars need different methods. I can not personally recomend any specialist. But from time to time on here ans other classic forums. folk do/have post about good/reliable operatives. Best of luck with your researches. Sadly none of the solutions will be cheap. Labour being the the cost it is in todays climate. Pete

You mean the same as has happened Historically for the Last "N" Millenia?. Just that without global media, and high general ignorance, was all put down to "act of god". So the religious orders could rake more money into their coffers and retain their hold on power?. One good extended Volcanic activity, ** throw`s more carbon into the atmosphere than mankind has done in the last 200years. Mankinds contribution is Puny, and the UK`s even smaller. 99.1% of which WE have no control over. The REAL global issue, is FAR TO MANY PEOPLE. But they are needed by those who control the finance, feed the paranoia, and use to make even more money and cement their power base. Oh! and of course ferment wars to sell armaments for even more profit? **, Ask yourself how much carbon and other pollutants the current activity in Iceland is creating?. Pete

A lot of this started under Boris, And by my reckoning he was no Socialist?. And no doubt paid for by the taxes of the rest of the country. Not one of your billionair "Non Doms" of whom I understand Cameron`s father was one? But the so are a few "opposition" contributers too, as I understand it. Non of this is specific to a particular party it is Politics per se, that are corrupt. (goes back beyond the Romans, and every "Ruler" ever). Pete

NO, they will all go on polluting in a business as usual fashion, and watch as we gradually turn orselves into a Starving, Freezing, Pathos. As far as I am concerened Global warming is the biggest "confidence trick" perpetrated in the last 200years. Milked to death for the benefit of a few billionairs. Pete

I suspect that both are only examples of the fact that politicians regardless of “persuasion” are not exempt from the temptations of corruption? The more distasteful part of life and a great media circus attraction to deflect from the fact that no one is concerned about the REAL issues, sadly, just what’s in it for me? Knowing where “bodies are buried” is a huge advantage in modern politics and big business. Pete
  7. You need to do that with a headlight lamp change on Sprinters, Plus needing an arm with 2 elbows and 2 wrist joints. Designers Never consider maintenance when making their fancy drawings. Circa. 1970. I stood by a new build ship fitting out on the Tyne. The fitter turned up the fit a Pump, bearing in mind this pump had a 6 monthly inspection and greasing schedule and would require overhaul and replacement at some point. The fitter was about to install it facing the bulkhead leaving the possibilty of ever removing it a long and convoluted job. To compound the issue, the pipe fitter turned up with a pipe connection section which made even that impossible. When I pointed the issue out, the answer was, "that`s how it is on the drawings". Took days to persuade them to do it "right". Pete

Yes, BUT we only have control over 0.9% of the carbon output. Which would mean that even if we bankrupted the country, and made 50million lives more miserable in many ways in the process of acheiving zero?. We will still be suffering the effects of 99.1% of the world carbon emision over which we have absolutely No control. Pete

ULEZ, Speed Camera`s, et-al. ONLY ever have one purpose. Raising Taxes. "Paying to pollute" is cynical, and IMV, morally indefensible. Pandering to pressure groups is totally non democratic. APNR, for example, is the thin end of a nasty "1984" style wedge, designed by control freaks. There is a chart, I have seen, which alleges the Uk`s contribution to Carbon emissions is 0.9% of world carbon. Yet we are persecuted by media and pressure groups to make further cut`s to a way of life. Pete
  10. Politics, One of lifes imponderables, Largely dosen`t matter which colour. Nothing changes because by the time the incumbents get round to doing "something" after all the "huffing and puffing" of debate, playing ping pong with the H.O.L. Said imcumbents are trying to set themselves up to be re-elected back to their cushy life styles. IMV. 3 things need to happen, 1) the "lords" want booting out, and replacing with an elected chamber (by P-R voting perhaps?) at the mid term, rather that First past the post?, And 2) extend the life of a Parliament beyond 5 years to allow some consistancy. Short of giving Me the job of Dictator, (NO Thanks) something needs to be done to shake the status quo. 3) The civil service, especially the top tiers, need to be far more acountable and open to scrutiny. and vastly reduced in size. Won`t happen any of it. Far too many vested interests. Pete
  11. The key might be from the FS series with 2 or 3 numbers. I have a buiscuit tin full of the b*ggers. FS, FP, Et-Al. But none that fit MY car.!! Pete
  12. Quick Question. Most (cost) effective Oil Filter combination for a 13/60 Herald. Not looking for anything esoteric, no plans to anything but a bit of pootling (Summer????) and likely change the Oil/filter annually anyway. I know the existing Filter is a Borg and Beck 4073, so that or equivalent. without breaking any Banks?. Cheers`s Pete
  13. The only way to check that would be to use "engineers" blue on the stub and by gently offering the "taper" to the axle the dicrepancy would show. Machining innacuracies especially on small batch work, would not be at all unknown. The Person who turns the stub is likely not to be the same as who bores the holes. In the days before bearing shells, it was the accepted method of ensuring bearing`s where running on the full surface. You used a scraper to gently remove any high spots. (Been there done that, once on the bed of a 28ft Lathe, took 3 of us in turns nearly a month to get it right, between breakdowns). Pete
  14. Very few Business`, certainly the smaller ones, run their own website, it`s usually been put together by some "consultant" using a downloaded blank. Or occsionally the M-D`s whizz kid son?. You can buy one of the net, fill the boxes and upload. Pete
  15. I actually Prefer E-Mail. 1) I can list specifically exactly what I am looking for/needing. 2) IF anything goes wrong. I have a record time/dated to relate to. These so called "bot`s"! are a Menace, I have yet to use one that get`s a result. I often feed them/it silly answers in order to get to the point where (hopefully) it will ask "do you want to speak to an agent". To day`s "game" will be H-P who`s new printer currently stubbornly refuses to "speak" to my laptop (Win 10) despite being able to print from my I-Phone!!. AND has a USB port the fails to connect!. Pete
  16. Generally speaking, drainage and or the manaagement of same, just comes down to good housekeeping, as necessary as collecting all the tools and keeping the bench/workshop clean clear, something that 99% of us are all guilty of neglecting to some extent. ( I know a couple of the "1%" but they have serious OCD) Pete.
  17. Rupturing of (air) pressure vessels is extrememly rare. In the main they "pinhole" long before they become a hazard. The only one I had experience of in a 20year "career" was in an old railway workshop, when the safety valve had been "gagged" down and the Compressor pressure switch failed. The resultant effect was as a torpedo, it took out all the benches in it way and embeded in a Victorian double brick wall 100 yards from it`s station. No injuries, but lots of damage and the fall out went on for weeks. The insurer did cover in the end, and the prepetrator was never discovered. Now Steam Boiler`s? That`s an all other ball game, and lives have been lost. One lady in Basingstoke, found an arm on her driveway and the explosion was over 3 miles away. 2 Men Died. Pete
  18. Ditto. Air braking system "autodrain`s". Truck brake air vessels fill with water at an amazing rate. I take the plugs out of my garage compressor every couple of years and put the endoscope in for a look see. (It must be due again, the last was during lockdown?) Had to scrap one once. The guy was really "chuffed" `cos he`d coated the inside with anti corrosion paint, to stop it rusting, so thick I couldn`t examine it!. As result I couldn`t certify it, so the insurer wouldn`t cover liability. Later we had Ultrasonic thickness guages, which made life that much easier, despite the fact they had to be calibrated frequently. Gave some of the Traction Engine fraternity nightmares though, when they where told their boiler could only be used with pressure downgraded, unless they did substantial repair. Some fireboxes where frighteningly thinned. Pete
  19. The only thing I`ve ever used, is a tiny smear of grease. Especially on the old "cork" ones. Pete
  20. Snap!!. The relavent page from the Haynes manual:- Pete
  21. Imagine a very thin steel wedge, that`s been cut to make a divided wedge that can fit either side of a bolt. I had (still have) a selection of such from my day`s as a factory millwiright. Often the only means of separating reluctant machine parts, or raising a mounting to insert shimming to get machine bed`s absolutely level (chocking) when setting up production lines. We used the same/similar methods to get shipboard machinery to line up too. Pete
  22. RS 1600?. Had one as a "company car" in the late 80`s. My bog standard 1300 was in for a warranty paint job, and it was the only thing the Guildford Ford agents could offer me. 2 weeks of "high speed posing" and then back to reality👍😭 Pete
  23. Both the ones I posted pic`s of earlier have screwed fittings , If one wished to go that option it should be relatively easy to fit a suitable hose tail to a Tapped top casing?. Being "old school" I would be thinking 1/8 or 1/4"BSP as I have the taps and dies to hand. Regarding my issue of Run and Die?. I await supply of new Filters. before a further investigation there being an outside chance the existing one has become brittle and cracked. Pete
  24. I possess one as in Doug`s No-1 Pic;, The problem being I am in Yorkshire, my Ball joint splitter Is???. I suspect in someone`s storage locker on the Avon and Kennett!!. The "give it a two handed whack", works OK 9 time out of 10, especially with the assitance of a split fox wedge. Pete
  25. One would not expect any great amount of lateral movement?. Which would suggest wear, of the holes or the bolts?, or wrongly sized fasteners. My recollection ( I have MX5 seats in my 13/60 now) is that the material is not exactly substantial? and age/wear is to be expected. I suppose if the holes are worn with some ovality opening up and fitting a larger bolt would help?. I found the O/E seats not to be partiularly comfortable, perhaps a personal thing? So replacement was one of my first Job`s. Back in the 80`s I fitted a set of Dolomite seats to the Vitesse for largely the same reasons. Pete
