  1. Hi Type 14 is quoted I see. So do I assume they would have been O/E in 1970/1? Pete
  2. Couple of questions? 1) where the later (14) disks ever fitted to the herald O/E. 2)how does one identify the one from the other?. eg;. My 13/60 has got nearly new disk`s and pad`s fitted. I just cleaned them up and put them back. but which ones will I have?. Pete
  3. Hmm?. Could be I had 2 or 3 Anglia`s pass through my hands, most being gutted out to go stage rallying. Before we moved onto Mk1 Escourt`s. Pete
  4. I suspect that might be close to the truth?. It`s definitely one of those 50/50 issues which can divide?. I know he like most welcomed the re instatement of the rolling 40year TAX exemption but I wasn`t aware of that particular blog post?. I don`t dislike him, he is quite personable, and knowledgable about his own cars but one cannot forget he IS an MP!. I do agree that the current MOT is overkill for the vast majority of classics, especially with it`s greater emphasis on "emisions", most if not all, of which older vehicles can never meet. But a basic check of the safety critical area`s like braking, steering and structure. Is In my view essential, even if taken out to 3 years (say). Tyres are another often overlooked area, how many "classics" are on "classic" (out of date) tyres I wonder?. eg; the ones on my 13/60 are in excess of 10 years old, they would have been 5+ years old when it came to me!, and IMV then due changing. I see their only journey in my ownership being onto the trailer that takes it for final paint!! Pete.
  5. I had (may still have) one of those Carb adapters. Not sure of it`s origin?. I`m racking my brain to remember what car it came off?. Edit Morris Minor?. Or Mini?. Pete
  6. Very likley, I know that prior to it happening there was some debate at grass root level not universally wellcomed. I imagine loved by the "fringe" who see a need to cut corners everywhere, even on safety !. Pete
  7. No intention!. It was a generic statement and totally non specific. The dropping of an MOT requirement for "our" cars was in my considered opinion yet another bad move by DVLA. Such that even one of our local MP`s (Sir Greg Knight) voiced his concern, and he has a large collection of classics!. There is no TSCC group locally, but the EYCC run monthly "gatherings" and many have voiced concern, mainly from the standpoint that ONE major incident could see the whole issue on the front page of the SUN (other trashy media available) and give us ALL a bad name.
  8. I rather suspect the end will depend on the reply I get from the Seller. One of the "likes" would be to fit an O/D box ultimately, but there are other considerations to check first. The head will have to come off the 1300 engine at some point to determine why there is one low compression, for which there are several possibilities. It was/is the potential availabilty of the 1500, that caught my attention. I saw Pete`s Re-located Battery on a previous post, but I was considering it`s move to the boot, as much from shifting some mass to the rear. Back when we had the Vitesse we had a large bag of sand permanently in the boot!. I do concurr, that either way the Engine is likely to need a re-build though. Anyway, thanks for the input guys, Lots of food for thought here. It`s only through these types of online brainstorming sessions that eventually some clarity prevails.πŸ‘ Pete
  9. HI Throw my hat in the ring?, NOT having the vehicle MOT`d, would be in my veiw an act of the most irresponsible nature. Having spent some near 20 years of my life certifying pressure vessels, and acting on several occasions as technical witness in court cases. I can catagorically state YOU DO NOT want to be facing some Barrister, who WILL cut you in half. These guys ( and girls) have NO morals, Just the desire to WIN. As a layman, you can at least rely on the "defence" of having taken the advice of a "proffesional" if something susequently goes wrong, which is why insurers employed guy`s like me!. How your conscience feels is another issue, Pete
  10. Intersting?. None of the foregoing would appear to present insurmountable issues. As for it being a O/D `box. I have yet to find out. I P-M`d the seller for further detail, and await a reply. I would be doing a full strip rebuild anyway, and replacing/renewing what was required. It is something I have been thinking about for some time now, as the existing engine as far as I know has done over 100K miles, with no records of a rebuild and at least one "low" compression, despite the head upgrade. IF, I go this route, I will look at building any neccessary wiring etc into the shell before refitting all the interior, and possibly relocate the Battery to the boot, to release the space to fit a Servo anyway. Pete
  11. Hi Seen a sale for a Spit 1500, engine, (twin SU`s) and I think the gearbox come with it?. (pm`d the seller to see). Β£250 is the "asking". 1). Is this a decent price?, the seller say`s it was running when removed "some" years back and does turn over?. 2) Is it a Swap for the 13/60?. 3) If it needed can the 1300 Head be transplanted?. I know my existing engine head was a club shop conversion at about 80K miles. I am considering the possibilty of swapping it, after a strip and rebuild, as a hedge aginst the unknown condition of my allegedy 100K mile plus 1300. motor?. Pete
  12. Hi Not my car. so spotted was the next place to ask?. I have been working through some old Photo`s and came across this:- I remember this being shown at several rallies and car shows around East Yorks and North Linc`s, in the mid 2000`s. Sadly it`s shown as being on SORN, the last MOT 2010. It looks as if it changed hands around June 2012. I just wondered if it was now owned by any TSCC member?. Pete
  13. Many UK shipping lines of that period carried CKD Cars,They where regarded in main as "top up" cargo. When loading was near complete the agent(s) and the chief (usually First Mate) loading officer would decide how many could be loaded within stabilty parameters to bring the vessel closer to the maximum draft. hence most where carried as "tween deck" items. "We" carried CKD Hillman Minx`s to Iran, during the Shah`s rule, many finishing up as Taxi`s. Pete
  14. If petrol could leak out (or at least the vapour) That would be the manner by which the air gets into the tank?. Even if the cap was fully sealed?. Pete
  15. Looking at it. Some judicious carving of one those nylon blocks used for fixing cabinets might create a usable replacement? Pete

Hmmm?, An old Calorifier and a lot of Copper pipe, plus some Potatoes?. Pete
  18. IS it copper?. I suspect more likely brass, It will still soft solder so long as it is clean and a good flux used, I am old fashioned enough to still use acid flux for such job`s. (non Electrical), Phosphoric acid is often used, but not that easy to get these days. Silver Soldering requires much higher temperature which cannot be acheved with an iron. I use a propane torch, and even an Oxy set. As for annealing copper, heat to cherry red, imediately plunge into water, sucessfully recovered many a copper washer!. Pete
  19. From what you say, I assume they should be higher than current?. That was my thought I will go back and check what extra slack is available πŸ‘
  20. I`ve been following this thread, as I have the Herald to tackle. I bit the bullet and ordered a pair of Seals, along with shed load of other necessary door stuff, from Canley. I have offered the bare frames up to see how the look now the Doors are close to alignment. One question, does the top of the frame align with the top of the Windscreen?. As you can see in the picky. It appears to be at least 1/4" or more too low? Both sides. Pete
  21. A lot is going to hang on the accuracy of the machine shop equipment and the skill of the operator, getting close tolerance. My take, looking at the Spec; table is that the Fitted Clearance tolerance is around 0.002"?, unless I am missreading.? With that in mind the Interferance fit to the Case, would need to be such that the design clearance is not reduced to the point where the "Oil wedge" cannot form and point contact takes place?. My "gut" suggests to me that 0.001" would be the optimum, enough, but not too much that the bearing "fit" would be "tight"?. Pete
  22. Having no experience of the use of Triumph Camshaft shells, Are they White Metalled?, or Plain?. Pete
  23. The one on the A166 at Garaby is grade 2 listed I am certain? Pete
  24. Yes, I expect that even Acid dip/pasivating/drying the shell might not produce any better results. Probably the best one can hope for is that the rate of deterioration is vastly reduced by the reduced Oxidisation due to the exclusion of Oxygen/moisture as far as possible?. Pete
  25. The Theory?. Is that if seam sealed the oxygen and moisture needed for the corrosion to continue is no longer available. On My current (13/60) where there was sign of corrosion starting it was dosed with "converter", cleaned up and dried and re-sealed. To be fair there isn`t much else one can do practically. Pete
