  1. Thanks Colin This thread has been a really useful learning curve for me. I would never have realised the difference in the flywheel I know they are heavy so the 2000 doubly so. Thanks for the picture it certainly makes it stand out! Does this impact on the clutch throw out? Aidan
  2. Thanks Dave. It's got minimal end float and without ancilleries so I will try and get it at a good price Aidan
  3. My uncle told me you should be able to move the belt a total of 1 inch from pushing in to pulling out. Always followed that since and not had a problem Agree with Doug still tappity If your feeling brave see my suggestion above when you have done it once you wonder why you never did it before! Aidan
  4. Hopefully a positive to this number HC52164HE from my list that's a mk2 vitesse would this be a good start? Aidan
  5. Hi Colin Yes I have seen this one. The trouble is its still a 2000 saloon engine , so if I understand all the other posts above will have a heavier flywheel and not the best camshaft? The idea is really to do the work myself as a project, to enjoy the process and end up with something I have achieved Aidan
  6. I agree tappets. I learnt something at the Twiddle day about this. Pete (the guru) showed how you can actually adjust the tappets while the rocker cover is off and the engine is running! Mine were all well adjusted, but I still had a tappet noise. Pete on the day went though each valve sliding a thin feeler gauge under each tappet until suddenly there was peace! Engine stopped, that particular tappet was tightened and hey ho sorted. Very little noise at all from my 6 pot - it just purrs. Aidan
  7. Hi I am now going to add more confusion! HA or maybe not! I had to double check my engine number and its actually: ML24700HE So would that be Domed or Flat Pistons? Maybe I should get one of those camera things from ebay and check? Aidan
  8. Thanks Dave I see a plan coming together! Maybe once the right engine is purchased refurb the head first, and possibly swap over on to the ME as a first step! Aidan
  9. Paul Thanks for the information, Royston is a couple of hours down the A1 from me so please PM me with the details. Do they deliver as I don't have a trailer, although I do know someone who has! I believe end float to be the lateral movement of the crankshaft, not sure if there's a specific tool to measure it but it tells you what condition the main bearings are in. I'm sure we will get some comments now on this Aidan
  10. Hi Paul You seem to be a step ahead of me here! Grateful if you would pm me on details of your purchase (where and cost) if you don't wish to publicise on here Thanks Aidan
  11. Mike have you tried Dave @ Spitfire graveyard? Usually a good source for second hand parts both spitfire and GT6 Aidan
  12. Clive is right. The best way is to know the part number. If you can find your way around the parts diagrams then Canley Classics is a good source for the part numbers as well as the site Clive mentions Once you know the part number google it with "triumph" in front of it and you will get multiple sources for the part Aidan
  13. Thanks Dave, Not really looking to increase power to any extent, my current engine (an ME) is OK for the moment and was rolling road measured @ 93 bhp a couple of years ago apart from burning a little too much oil. I was thinking more about like for like replacement in terms of power but re-built by me as a project in itself. Aidan
  14. Thanks all If you were planning on rebuilding an engine for an eventual swap over (not upgrading to Pi or 2500), what would be the best engine to start with (assuming that they are not hens teeth!) Thanks Aidan
  15. Hi Pete My thoughts were to get and slowly refurb another engine (probably over a year or so) and I don't want to lay the car up for that length of time I have not done much research on which engine would be the best to work from. Which cars had the mk2 engine? Or is that as stupid a question as it looks? GT6 or 2000 saloon or both? Aidan
  16. Thanks all Probably not for me! Looking for a mk1 engine really that can be refurbished over a good time span and eventually replace my current mk2 2000 Aidan
  17. Hi all Thoughts on this fleabay item please? Apart from the fact it's a mk3 not a mk2 as advertised by the engine number https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F273113481115 Aidan
  18. I was sure it was the shop that was advertising them? Might just be going mad though! Hard week at work Aidan
  19. I agree but to ensure I replaced all my fluid I have an oil syringe that I use to get all the old fluid out of the m/c The remainder oin the pipes is removed as part of the bleeding process https://www.screwfix.com/p/handy-parts-hp-162-oil-change-kit-1ltr/27283?tc=FT4&ds_kid=92700024374056971&ds_rl=1249481&ds_rl=1245250&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1q3VBRCFARIsAPHJXrF73u4YMaZj5pcKI3DySzpdMAstZrgwJeHVoALFKwQYIk9B6oYabogaArddEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CN_Gx6ms8NkCFc63GwodDXAORQ Audan
  20. Hmm id be interested to know that as well. Is it because they are only supposed to be used on the track? More to the point, how the heck would anyone know anyway? Aidan
  21. Glad to hear you removed it ok. You may be able to pick up a replacement if that's the way you decide to go Chic Douig maybe a good source. The mk1 one is a hens tooth item! What's your vynal top like? You can get kits to recover them mine was from Park Lane Classics. He is a useful person to know and gave me instruction on how best to do this Aidan
  22. Sorry missed the tag It's the same as mine then and I don't think it would be possible. The minimum is to remove the parcel shelves on both sides but even then if I remember right there are six nuts to undo so you will really struggle even with a flexi extension. You also have to disconnect the vents which you could possibly leave until you lift the top up Aidan
  23. Thanks all I will do some elbow grease measuring and use that for now. There have been a few situations where I have found myself wondering on this! Just waiting for .My kind nut delivery from Richard Aidan
