  1. Took it out this morning to give it a bit of a run and I've broken it Head gasket has gone by the looks of things - lots of white smoke - Which is a royal PITA - I put the right gasket on as far as I can tell - Payen and spec's for a 1500. All torqued down correctly. Took the spark plugs out and number 4 is wet - first thought it was petrol but swapped plugs and the same - then smelt it (I have a very bad sense of smell) and it doesn't. Bit peed off to be honest.
  2. And when cranking you should see the full 12v across the coil (well less than 12 because when cranking the voltage will drop a bit due to the load. ) did you say you tried with a direct feed to the coil when starting?

Oh there have been several Tesla's going up - they tend to get put out and then re-ignite a couple of days later....... This chap messes with them quite a lot.

They are as they work fine for that for years - just no good in cars due to the reduced capacity. Some big firms are looking at having hulking great containers full of them and charge them at night and use the power in the day - and also feed the grid if needed. I know of one site I go to that is seriously looking into them - but although I think they are free to get sited, not free to install and there are a few caveats that they are looking at as I think surity of supply is one thing they loose......
  5. Not been out again in the car, but thought I would just add a little to this as I had a clean up in the garage last weekend and got rid of a load of stuff down the tip as I was running out of room! When I put all the bits back together onto the car, I couldn't find the choke clamp - wasn't where I remember putting it - I'd put all the various bits in their own plastic box so they were all together - its only taken me about 30years to learn that trick - the one I previously bought didn't fit as it was too big, so I went onto eBay and found the part on their for less than a couple of quid and bought it - actually for a Mini! Duly arrived and fitted perfectly So back to the clear up - I had put the old oil pump on a large plastic tray (meant to be for putting grow bags on I think!) - and was just tidying that up and lo and behold, there was the original clamp! Have no recollection of putting it there whatsoever!
  6. Leather off? Don’t think I’ve even done that to any of my cars in 35+ years of motoring. They get washed once a year if they need it or not.
  7. Also to prove the coil, put something in the end of spark plug lead from the coil (Spark plug would do) make sure the end is on something to ground (Block for example) and apply power to the coil - then disconnect the negative - you should get a spark.
  8. Measure the coil resistance - should be either 3 or 1.5 Ohms.
  9. Several questions you need to answer to give people half a chance! 1. Points or electronic ignition - does it work? Contacts ok etc? 2. Voltage to coil ok? 3. Plugs ok? 4. Dizzy ok? One way is to see if you have a spark at the centre of the dizzy 5. Rotar arm ok?
  10. Whats the issue with the website? It can take a few seconds to load occasionally, but that is probably just due to the pictures and after the first load it pulls from the local cache by the looks of things. I like it.
  11. Question is, how much oil is it actually using? If its not much or at least reasonable, don't worry too much would be my view. Sort it when you need to!
  12. I'm from the midlands - not that far from Lode Lane or Longbridge and the guys that made the doors fit were known (So I believe anyway) as "Door F***ers" 🙄
  13. If the rings are gone it is unlikely you will see a big difference doing a wet/dry test. It is plausible that the rings have stuck over the layover - you might be lucky and get away with an italian tune up once its good and warm. But blue smoke is normally rings I think - I've refurbed the top end of mine over the last few weeks and replaced the pistons (Was just going to change rings, but a set of NOS pistons came up on ebay and swapped them out. Ran it for the first time yesterday and a short run out today as it happens. What happens when looking behind if you accelerate and then come off the throttle? I.e. high vacuum? and the accelerate again?
  14. And I've now been around the block in it this morning - runs very nicely - started on the button. Still needs to be tuned etc, but does feel very nice. Seems to need a lot less throttle pressure to increase speed - though that could just be me being used to the modern! Work now beacons
  15. Have a good day chaps - next time............ I hope
  16. Had a very busy week at work this week and not getting home before 6 most days after leaving at 6:30 - so not had the time/inclination to go into the garage. And today I picked up my new modern and had to go into brum- so didn’t get much time until this evening after tea. I checked the timing and refitted the plugs. Cranked over the engine and it fired up after a few turns due to the carbs being empty! didn’t run too great - and cut out. Wouldn’t restart as the battery was basically flat and flooded But about 5 minutes on my 25A charger and it was back up to a decent charge and this time it fired up much better - needed a fair bit of choke and the exhaust manifold is smoking badly due to the oil that is over it. But that will clear idle to too low and needs adjusting and the carbs tuning though I take that as a good sign as it was running with the idle screws almost fully out. Im hoping to get it on the road for a short drive tomorrow before I do some work but it runs and runs sweet 😁
  17. Tell me about it. I’ve done about 35hours so far this week already.
  18. I’m not 100% sure I’m going to make this at the moment. Work has gone manic and I may have to work the weekend. 😢
  19. Sgs engineering do bespoke gas struts they did some for me for my rear tailgate on my Land Rover to suit the addition of a ladder on the back door. https://www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-struts
  20. Rotating stuff and power leads are never a good combination! I did manage to cut through a hedge trimmer cable some years ago! Battery drills are the way forward! 😃
  21. Tends to be black and oily. A clean burning plug should be brown/grey in colour (depending exactly on the fuel I think)
  22. I fitted the fan belt and set the tappets. Fitted the choke cable with a new clamp - ordered thursday night and arrived today from Ebay £1.89 - perfect fit. I then pulled the PRV - and I can feel nothing wrong with it - I have a shortened drill and used that and again the seat feels fine. There is a fair suction to pull the valve out - but I take that as a good sign TBH! Pushing it back in feels ok - doesn't seem to drag - I guess it doesn't actually come out that much? Any one know?
  23. Very much so. Pressure was well up on the gauge! Light went out on a fairly slow spin. What happened is this: Pressure went up - over 60psi - then the oil rose up the dizzy housing at the same time as it started to gurgle. Pressure dropped. Same speed of the drill and it stayed around 30/40psi. I will whip out the PRV and see if I can detect any sort of binding - it has to be that - though fixing without major work is going to be interesting - but as @rogerguzzi says a good clean might be enough (Though I thought I'd done that - but thought is a powerful word!)
