  1. You can use the LHD switch and swap it over to RHD - I did it, but can't remember what I did to get the arrows to be right - may have swapped the arm itself.
  2. I have some red handled Stanley’s. The very big one was damaged probably by misuse as a kid of 17 or 18 On car. The terminal screwdriver was superb and is sorely missed as it got stolen. Wera are my current driver of choice. Not cheap but not made of cheese either.
  3. My last 2 tanks have been about 32. Thats no overdrive, Newman’s cam skimmed head 4 branch manifold and sports exhaust. i want to swap the needles out for a slightly different profile as I think it’s running a bit lean.
  4. Red light means its not charging the battery - so chances are it was only just charging it when running. Depending on how the alternator is failing it is possible it could drop the revs.
  5. I have long complained about the use of China (And others) for our manufacturing hub. Mainly because of their appalling human rights and general care less attitude to pretty much everything. Same with the we are green attitude - we have just exported ours to the 3rd parties. You have to look at the whole cycle. We have also been brought into the replace with new - both when broken and not fixing and when you just fancy a change. How many people (Most on here probably excepted) change their cars every 3 years? Keep until the warranty expires and buy new because repairs are expensive? Forgetting that a new car costs a minimum of 20% of its value when you drive off the forecourt and another 30% or so over the next 3 years. Buy a lot of bits for that!
  6. I would guess vapour lock - but the slow starter is a bit odd. I guess you didn't try to turn the engine by hand to see if it had stiffened up? Funnily mine was a bit of a sod to start after a short shut off today - but I do think its running a little lean as it also slightly pops and bangs on the overrun every now and then. I did adjust the one float level after I smelt petrol on startup but found that in the end to be the hose clamp not quite tight enough - but not before I'd made the float tweek. Then it wouldn't start and run with out a lot of choke - but then found I'd forgotton to plug the breather hose back into the carb. Fuel lines are not insulated - just a stainless heat sheild.
  7. I'd rather go for the super as its not E10. And the amount of miles I do the extra cost is not significant. When I had my Disco, I was spending over £5k in fuel a year - my current modern is below £1500 - to be fair I'm also doing about 8k miles a year less at the moment, but even then the cost has halved.
  8. Porsche, Aston, Jag, Ferrari and a lot of Jap cars all prefer super - but the ECU's generally will detune to suit. Tesco brought out some 100octane and that sold so there is a demand - if only in the pissing competition.
  9. Super unleaded is also used by many of the sports cars, so its not going disappear anytime soon.

  11. I did earlier. But was due I think to the PO lapping the valves in which caused the lead memory to disappear.
  12. I had my head done a couple of years ago by a firm in Bromsgrove (Was on Car SOS - the firm not my car!) and they said it had suffered recession - but I think the PO had reground the valves in......... They did the valve angles too and also skimmed it 0.5mm or so.
  13. My Spitfiew has done significantly more this year than previous years - but is still less than 1000 miles so far. It pales into insignificance compared to my modern which has done about 18k in the last 12 months - which in itself is about 6-7K less than usual.
  14. What sort of tune are you after? There is no reason why you can't do it yourself. ?The only difficulty would be if the 1500 is not stock and then you might need a rolling road to get it set up 100%.
  15. Many years ago I ran into the back of a landcrab in Sheffield whilst going down a hill in my 1200 beetle. He had a tow bar at the back so didn’t do him any damage but the numberplate had wrapped around the ball and put a big dent in the bonnet - which wouldn’t open. 🙄 Once I’d got it home I got my uncles dolly and beat the bonnet back out perfectly - so good it needed no filler before spraying. I was dead chuffed at the time. I would have been about 18 or 19 at the time.

    I know you said it in jest - but is used when bolted to a bench or simlar so is to remove pegs or nails from a portable object. So could be just to de-nail floorboards.
  18. I'd agree as much as I can about performance in snow - as I can't remember if I've actually driven in snow on them! But as a "winter" tyre they are more than acceptable for the weather we get around here. My wife has a second set of wheels and tyres for the winter - which work really well for her - she just wouldn't go out in the car otherwise and still doesn't in the snow. Having said that the number of miles that she does these days makes her car a waste of money - does less than my Spitfire!
  19. They are classed as a winter tyre. But can be used all year round. my current set (except one that had a puncture the other week) have done over 20k miles and still have very good tread. Probably another 10k
  20. I have 65/70R13 Falken on my Spitfire - can't say I have any experience in the wet as such - but dry and cold have been very good. Very satisfied. Both mine and my daughters daily's are running Michelin Crossclimate 2 and they are suburb tyres - I would say ultimate dry grip is compromised compared to a true summer tyre - but more than adequate - its the cold and wet performance that is exceptional - lots of confidence on bends in the wet - given that I too drive to the conditions you can press on with no drama.

  22. There is an issue with allegro and similar front end problem - but that was generally due to over tightening the front bearing and at low speed the wheel would fall off.
  23. Definitely checkout Canley classics - I think there prices are the price you pay - based on the last thing I bought which was last January. So will either be a few quid cheaper or a lot! But they are out of stock at the moment so depends how you are! To be fair Pete, I don't think its a myth, plenty of evidence to show failures happen - and if you have put sticker/wider tyres on, the limit of the original design may be found despite good maintenance.
  24. I was actually in the office for just gone 7am this morning - so the traffic was quiet- and coming home tonight it wasn't bad either - but I think schools are either already broken up or close to it!
  25. Took the car to work today - had our first face to face office meeting for 18months - and as it was a nice day with a reasonable forecast (As in low chance of rain) I took the car - I had already checked the insurance and it covers commuting!
