  1. Adrian - Don't worry, I have asked my fair share of questions with obvious solutions over the years. Just shows the support that you get from everyone here.
  2. Watch out Bob..... can of worms opening time!!!! Silicone/dot3 (etc) is a very personal issue. I did exactly the same as you when I recomissioned my Spit and replaced all the brake rubbers and used silicone. No problems at all to date. Brake pedal may be a bit spongier but when changing from a modern with servo assist it's just a case of a bit more pressure on the pedal.
  3. Home brewed beer at 10p/15p a pint (mentioned on other threads!!) so even Pete can buy me a drink!!
  4. Agreed. If you want technical, read the various manuals. If you want advice, experience of how to/not do it, this forum is the place. 'Human' is exactly the right word. This forum is like asking for advice down at the pub/club but on an international scale. You can't beat it. The style won't be for everyone, it never will be, but it suits me... and loads of others. Long may it last.
  5. If Doug reads anything about dumping gauges he will be very unhappy!
  6. These days companies will have software to identify sites that are being accessed by their employees and block these sites to stop access during work time, for obvious reasons. In my area a local council identified and prosecuted a councillour for using unsavoury sites on his council paid for computer/phone!! Take care when accessing any site not pertaining to work.. they are watching you.
  7. You may want to consider also ordering a set of the seat side panels that go in the little pockets which you will find at the bottom of the covers to clip them on to the seat frames: http://www.parklaneclassics.co.uk/product_500-007.htm When I fitted my covers, the side boards in my old seats were shot so I ordered a set from JP which were dreadful quality and didn't fit so I sent them back and made a set from high quality hardboard and the original metal clips. I also recommend getting several metres of pirelli rubberised seat webbing 1.5 inches wide (fleabay has a lot on offer), to replace your old ones which are also probably knackered. You should be able to use the old metal clips. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pirelli-Rubber-Upholstery-Webbing-Ercol-replacement-Webbing-2-or-1-webbing/172263178737?hash=item281baf81f1:m:m58VDgoX4LrXR5VO3mMxngw
  8. You also might consider putting twin stick tape on the door around the window winder, door pull and door handle (as well as around the edge) to add a better seal. Bit of a pain when you need to get it off but adds a bit more resistance to the damp.
  9. Owen supplied me with foams and leather covers. They are the best things I have ever bought for my Spitfire. The fit, the quality, the price, are all first class, but get your order in quick. There is a waiting list and he usually has a shut dowm period in the summer. My praise (and from others) for his work is all over this forum. His stuff is the best. I did have a few problems with the instructions but the quality of his product is renowned worldwide. I intend to get the full interior trim from him when I finally get around to respraying the car. I hope he doesn't retire before them!!!
  10. I think mine are made from builder's visqueen damp-proofing membrane, and siliconed on to the door
  11. Mark - Forget the phone, use your proper camera!!
  12. One for the CoM Maybe group of classic car clubs should band together and get a list of mot stations that have given proven good service. Only the clubs would know who the bad ones were, so no 'name and shame'. It could be published on-line as recommendations or in club mags. MOT stations could then aspire to be listed in the 'Classic Car MOT Blue Book'. Just like restaurants in a Michelin Guide. I know this idea will raise flak from some quarters so I'll get my tin helmet!!

THREAD DRIFT ALERT I would love to know how many Lidl/Aldi tools have been bought by TSSC forum members alone!! On the whole mine (12 of them at least) have proved to be very reliable, useful and value for money.
  14. I would suggest that while you are searching for the cause, you treat the inside of the tank with Frosts tank sealant. It is supposed to seal pin holes etc, and while not a cheap treatment, should sort out the inside for the rest of its life. https://www.frost.co.uk/por15-professional-big-fuel-car-tank-repair-sealer-kit.html It comes in various sizes and you can also get it via fleabay. Some people have reported problems with it but it is essential that you follow the instructions carefully and that the inside of the tank is TOTALLY dry.
  15. Like everything else in the world, who do you trust... what do you trust. You can't even say... you get what you pay for. I have paid a fortune for cr*p and bought really good stuff dirt cheap. Back to the quality of parts debate threads.
  16. I'm sure that somewhere I have a remote start switch. May have been made by Gunsons. Two big croc clips, one for each of the two big terminals Pete mentioned wired to a push button switch between them. Wonder where it is??
  17. My Dad worked in the steel industry all his life and in the 70s was horrified at all the rubbish steel that was being shipped to the far east and coming back as Datsuns!!
  18. Was the quality of steel any better in the old bolts. I have noticed the tendancy for some of the new stuff to strip threads more easily, or maybe it just me overtightening!
  19. Thanks all, for your insight. The insurers will be noisey enough as soon as it starts to cost them money.. then it will cost us money. Will get car mot'd soonest.. when it stops raining!!!
  20. Would it work if the metal was rubbed back and treated with something like Bilthamber hydrate 80 before painting or would the B/h 80 converted metal/rust just burn off.
  21. I don't think you should have to. I joined English Heritage over the bank holiday and just paid the normal rate. EH would reclaim the tax back directly from the Revenue. I just had to confirm that I was a UK tax payer so that they could reclaim the tax that I had already paid.
  22. Please forgive my ignorance on this one, but when you click 'mot exempt' are you not self certifying that the vehicle is road worthy. I'm sure that I read this somewhere but not sure. If this is correct are you not laying yourself open to prosecution if th boys/girls in the blue suits pull you over with a fault or there is an accident due to a vehicle problem. I'm probably totally wrong, but its a thought!
  23. If the government wanted us to pay tax on all our income, they wouldn't have invented tax allowances.
