I have RAC personal cover for any vehicle I am in if it breaks down. Hence my not needing extra recovery etc bundled with my classic insurance.
  2. If you are still bidding on the Vitesse, good luck.

PJ gave me a quote £10 more than Footman. Do any of the insurers do a policy without breakdown cover as both myself and Mrs BW are covered on our moderns.
  4. When the replacement arrives I will put a micrometer on it. Sadly I dont have a set of imperial taps so will have to settle for carefully running a 5/8th unf (thanks Pete L) bolt down the threads for the time being. Thankfully the oil pressure sensor and pressure relief valve which came on the same order appear to be ok. I would love to know what the acceptable parts failure rate is for a large spares house like Rimmers.
  5. Thanks Pete, but I would have thought that running the old unit in a out a few times should have cleaned the thread. Suppose that if the new unit is slightly over length (not measured it) it might foul in gunge at the back, but, on reflection, it gave the impression of a metric threaded equivalent in an imperial hole. Will see what the replacement is like.
  6. All our household waste is responsibly sorted before collection by the local council who I expect to dispose of it in accordance with current environmental policies (whether this be well written and acted on or not). Anything they do not collect, such as oil, timber etc, I take to the local recycling center. It annoys me intensly that a huge percent of the plastic packaging that we have to dispose of is due to the demands of the supermarkets. All down to convenience and self service to keep prices down to attract us to buy..... on and on. All most of it needs is a simple, recycled paper bag which decomposes or can be burned to make electricity for electric cars. Even the parts I ordered from Rimmers recently were individually packed in plastic bags which I will keep for further use rather than just throw away. The supermarkets use the packaging. We should give it back to them after use... rant over!!!
  7. Pete - No makers name or packaging or part. Just in a generic Rimmers bag. It is a GTR108, which the books say is correct for the herald 13/60 engine in my Spit. Rimmers are sending me a replacement FOC. I'll see how I get on with that. I just hope that I haven't damaged the housing.
  8. Looking great. Is that furry thing on a stick behind you on Feargal or the car next door?
  9. I spent an interesting 15 minutes this evening changing my water temperature sensor which I got recently from Rimmers as my temp gauge is reading low. It is showing about 25% but at lest it appears to be a regular reading. I thought that a new sensor might give a better reading. So took out the old one which was covered in 40 odd years of crud and after a quick visual check that I had been sent the correct one started to screw it in. A bit tight but in it went until about 1/8 inch from the end when it tightened up, made an appalling graunching noise and stuck. Worry set in and I tried to get it out. The spanner rounded off the hex nut section which just appeared to break up into a sort of metal crystal dust. Finally extracted it with a mole wrench. Same length as the original.. all looked the same. Needless to say, now totally useless. Before I whinge at Rimmers, does anyne have any ideas what I did wrong? Cleaned up the old one and put it back in without problems. Wrong unit, rubbish part, ham fisted mechanic??? Has anyone else had a similar problem?
  10. Shaun. I understand your feelings but if you pay someone to dispose of the rubbish, you expect it to be done properly. When the bin men take away the general rubbish along with the recycling I have carefully sorted (paid for by me in the local rates), I stupidly expect them to dispose of it correctly and am not going to chase them up to find out what they did with it. The only other thing to do is take the rubbish back from whence it came and say I don't want this... yours to deal with. I'm sure Asda, Tesco etc would love me for it.
  11. What are the lights in the 'radio' console? I assume main beam, oil, ign and ? Is that a hazard warning button to the left of the speedo?
  12. I went into the Frosts (importers of POR15 and other restoration products) on a couple of occasions. Their staff are very helpful. They have several items or metalwork painted in POR15 , and take great delight in bashing them with huge wrenches to show how tough it is. Very impressive but very noisy!! The stuff is also supposed to be very flexible as well. There are loads of videos around showing how to apply it, mostly American (y'all know it!!!).
  13. Thank Doug/Paul. I knew someone would guide me through it. I have seen several posts about upgrading relays and fuses over the time I have been on the forum but never thought it was worthwhile. However after seeing the details of the fire in the Courier and then the mention of the blade switch box in the 'electric fuel pump' thread, made me think that lifting the load on the three fuses might just be a good idea.
  14. BLADE FUSE BOX - I like the idea of the blade fuse box upgrade mentioned in the 'electric fuel pump' thread. I know that many of you have fitted extra fuse systems. Can anyone give me a step by step guide to fitting one (or two) please and the best way to pick up the various leads from the loom along with the most popular 'groups', lights, ignition, radio etc etc.
  15. Derek. I don't think you have mentioned what you have painted the floor with. If I have overlooked it, sorry. Many on here recommend POR15 for underbody work. It will also be great for under the carpets as it is like body armour according to the numerous videos. I am looking into it for other parts of my Spit. The thing you have to be careful of is the body prep as it has to be done right otherwise the paint comes off in sheets. Do it right and you don't do it again. No doubt there will be conflicting posts to follow this as we all have our own preferences/experience. I did my floor in hammerite...but.... it was the old hammerite which is nothing like the rubbish sold today. 30 years later, it only needed a bit of touching up having had damp carpet against it for over 20 years. I found a full tin of the old stuff in the garage, still liquid and useable.
  16. If it annoys you, just write on each letter 'not at number **' (insert your house number), take them out for a ride in the Triumph and put them in the nearest postbox. Keep on dong this for a few days and it won't take long for someone to get the message.
  17. Gully - I agree that suppliers have to protect themselves from certain customers, but to put a sticker on the outside of a package giving instructions whereby you may sign away your statutory rights before you read them, and that you probably won't read until it is too late, is very naughty!
  18. If the car is at the auction, check about removing it. Many people go unprepared for things like taking it home. Above all, read all the small print. Most of all... good luck. Let us know how you get on.
  19. Got my order from Rimmers yesterday. It had an interesting label stuck on the outside which I read after the courier had chucked it at me asked for a signature and legged it at speed (as they do). I'm not sure how close Rimmers are to breaking the law, if not actually breaking it, coming very close to it. The label states.. "Important read this label before you sign" - oh yes, tell that to a busy courier on a timed schedule "Fragile do not use a knife" - 10 yards of packing tape and staples every 2 inches - what should I use, screwdriver, scissors...! "Claims for damaged parts cannot be made if you have signed the delivery note received in good condition" - so I haven't opened the box, cannot see through the box, how do I know that what is inside isn't bent, broken, dented or damaged in some other way, even though the box looks fine? Is the courier going to wait while I find something which is not a knife, fight my way carefully into the packageing, check the contents against the delivery note and also for damage espacially as some are individually wrapped a plastic bag, in a box, in another plastic bag then in bubble wrap I don't sign delivery notes received in good condition, l always sign as 'not checked', but really, if there is a way to sign away your rights, someone will try it on. I expect better from Rimmers.
  20. Only, decide what its worth to you and don't go above no matter how tempting. Try not to bid in round pounds, 1000, 2000 etc. If there are any pre auction/sealed bids the auctioneers should take the highest ever if only £1 more. Make sure that you are aware of the payment requirements before you go and also what extra fees you may be responsible for. When the hammer comes down.. the winner pays!!!
  21. I bought a set of rubbers off fleabay and just swopped them for the old ones. Easy enough to buy some oversize ones and cut to length. Probably work just as well as the old ones did. I don't think the wipers were up to much when the car first came off the assembly line.
  22. I have noticed that the level of fuel in the see through filter drops over a period of time (1 to 2 weeks if not used) and the car takes a little time to start. I thought if was evaporation. Should I be looking for something more seious. No sign of leaks or smell of petrol.
  23. Pete. A quick blast with WD40 and you should fold up nicely. PeaTear. Add a flask of tea to the list.. Pete runs well on strong tea.
  24. Thanks for that Paul. Will give it a try first.
  25. Derek. When you get all your stuff you will find that the instructions leave a little to be desired. Don't be afraid to ask question here. The text is fine but the photos are a little on the small side to make out the fine detail.
