  1. Hi, Doug says above "GT6 mk3 (engine) numbers start from KE101 and progress...". My engine, which I believe to be original, is stamped KE 83 HE. The Comission no. is 16 and the body shell is 23 - all prefixed KE. It's been suggested previously that my car may have been a promotion vehicle as it was not put into the sales stream until December 71 but was made 27/10/70 and taxed with a 72 plate. I'm trying to trace the car's early history, soI'm really interested in knowing if what Doug says, with all due respect to someone who clearly knows his stuff, about the numbering is correct. Paul
  2. Richard, thanks for the advice. I'd just spoken to a couple of guys in a local club I'm a member of and they'd advised exactly the same. I'd also been experimenting and found that if I soak the areas with a paint stripper, STRIP AWAY PRO, for 30 minutes it comes away really easily just leaving whatever residual paint etc. that's underneath which I can easily deal with. Thanks again. Paul
  3. Hi, I'm in the process of stripping the GT6 back to bare metal. However the bonnet underside is coated with a mixture of things - paint, underseal and goodness knows what else. I've start to remove it but it'll clearly take many weeks and even then I doubt I'll be able to get into the more inaccessible places. So I'm thinking of getting it blasted. Does anyone know of/can recommend/have experience of any outfits in the Merseyside/Cheshire/North West/North Wales areas who do this type of work? Thanks, Paul

  5. Thanks guys. I think you're right NM, there's clearly paint in places with filler over. From the texture of the current top coat there's a chemical reaction taken place resulting tiny bubbles erupting under the top coat. I guess a PO opted for a less than thorough respray - and, yes, it's definitely better than finding rot!
  6. Hi, I've started to strip the paint off the car to bare metal in preparation for a re-spray. The last re-spray was done 30+ years ago. I did a test strip on the area just in front of the windscreen and found evidence of filler. Expecting the worst I stripped the whole area and found just solid steel. I then stripped a rear wing and found exactly the same. The complete wing has a skim of filler over it and underneath is sound and cleans up nice and shiny. I'm guessing I'm going to find more of the same when I tackle the next area. Does anyone have any ideas as to why someone would skim filler over apparently sound panels? Or am I just being thick and missing something obvious? Thanks for any help.
  7. Doug, Must have just missed you earlier, passed the LSI on my way to the garden centre just up the road. Had visited Aldi earlier but no sign of extinguishers.
  8. Hi, do you still have the old switch? May help to re-fit it and see if the symptoms are still there - just in case the new switch is duff. Paul
  9. Hi, I'm looking for a pair of Stromberg 150 cdse carbs for an early GT6 Mk3. If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks, Paul
  10. Hi, Just spotted this on a national search (think it's London). Can't upload pic but search ID is 1298422305. Paul
  11. Doug, Thanks for that. There are steel bushes currently in place and it's a 3/8th bolt that passes through them. However the bush is quite a lot larger diameter which led me to conclude there was another bush to go in. Thinking about it, the relative sizes may be correct, the different diameters being to allow movement for bonnet gap alignment. Any thoughts and If some kind soul could take a peep at the arrangement on their car and let me know I'll be grateful. Paul
  12. Hi, Earlier today, after 25 years of separation, I did a trial fitting of the bonnet. Suddenly the car looked like a Gt6 again! I've realised, though, that the hinge pivot points should have bushes in them (part number 624508). Having checked in the usual places it appears they are no longer available. Can anyone please advise me as to what I can use in their place or provide any guidance that may help me move on. thanks, Paul
  13. Hi, what carb make and type is it?
  14. Wayne, Took mine off recently and there was nothing behind it. Paul
  15. Hi, Having spent a pleasant afternoon cleaning 25+ years of grime off my carbs and manifold as I prepare for a rebuild I've ended up with a question. A previous owner fitted a pair of SU carbs. As you can see from the pic they've incorporated a small piece of an aircraft carrier landing deck as, I assume, a spacer. Is my spacer assumption correct or is there another reason for this arrangement? I'm happy to stay with the SUs if I can't find suitable Strombergs and I just want understand why they are so much further away from the manifold than the Strombergs would be. Thanks in anticipation. 16. So I'm looking for pair of CDSE Stromberg 150s to go with the Smiths Emission Valve if I want to go back to the original spec ..... which I do. There's never a dull moment with a Triumph! Thanks folks.
  17. Thanks again everyone. I now know an awlful lot more about carbs than I did when I started this thread. Life's never dull when you own a Triumph!
  18. Thanks everyone, replies are much appreciated. Paul
  19. Thanks one and all for the information and advice. If I can push things just a little further - is there any way of identifying the different set types from the serial numbers on the carb body? Paul
  20. Thanks to you both for coming back to me. My commission number is KE16 and the engine number is KE84. A previous owner has put a pair of SUs on and I've now acquired a pair of Stromberg 150CDs. I'm minded to refurb and install the CDs as part of my restoration plan and I'm assuming it won't really matter if they're not CDSEs as my understanding is these are just emissions reduction improvements and with my likely annual mileage I don't think I'll be doing too much additional environmental damage! Paul
  21. Hi, I'm starting to get boggle eyed and just a little confused..... can someone please confirm for me what model Strombergs would have been fitted originally to my early (1971 manufactured) Mk3? I've read loads of info but find conflicting references to CD and CDSE variants. Thanks, Paul
  22. Thanks Steve, much appreciated. Paul
  23. Thanks both for the information. Much appreciated. Life's never dull with a Triumph! Paul
  24. Hi, Sometime ago I acquired a pair of Stromberg 150CD carbs with a manifold. I've been able to verify the manifold via its Stanpart reference as correct for the car. What I haven't been able to do is identify if the carbs are CD or CDSE. Can anyone please enlighten me as to how to tell the difference? Many thanks, Paul
