  1. When I recovered my Vitesse steering wheel used some offcuts from a local upholsterer. Drew a line around the inner circumstance of the wheel to keep stitch line straight and clear adhesive to stop the cover moving on the wheel. Regards Paul
  2. When I had two teeth break of third gear on the cluster the one Mike Papworth supplied had been drilled and sleeved. He said that it was difficult to find someone to do a good job at a reasonable price, this was well pre COVID, doubt if things have improved. Regards Paul.
  3. Cheap tools often turn out to be the most expensive ones. Regards Paul
  4. I use a rachet crimp tool for the insulated terminals, only thing I have to remember is to put the terminal in the tool the right way around. Tool pointing away from me the right side of jaw crimps tighter, for wire, than left side for insulation also sides are shaped differently, can't say if all rachet crimpers are the same. As with all tools they are designed for right handed users so being left handed it feels wrong. Regards Paul
  5. As to Waxoyl, have moved to Bilt & Harmer products. Regards Paul.
  6. Sounds similar to the three rail J type overdrive box I have in my Mk1 2L Vitesse, mine has the fine input shaft as found in the single rail box. Regards Paul
  7. If 2L Vitesse, same basic gearbox in early Dolomite 1850, and isn't single rail very similar, same case etc. Regards Paul
  8. That looks in excellent condition. Regards Paul
  9. The stock answer to a complaint is to say no one else has complained. Regards Paul.
  10. Always understood an overdrive gearbox about 50KG, a bare six cylinder engine 150KG but might be wrong As to the two bolts cut a slot in the thread end to take a screwdriver, hold the nut still and rotate the bolt, then finally tighten with a spanner, the method I use. Regards Paul.
  11. Even buying new old stock you have to be careful as the packet can contain a mixture of old and newly manufactured gaskets. If they won't let you open to check walk away?. Regards Paul.
  12. I regularly drive my Vitesse while wearing size 12 walking boots, don't think a larger brake pedal would be a good idea. Regards Paul.
  13. On my Vitesse I've put a small o ring on the pipe, pump side of the olive, which has always worked tor me. Regards Paul
  14. To be clear the straps l shortened were the convertible ones, the first picture in his post is of the seat I did not fit, after all the work making straps and wire supports, because of the reduced leg room. Regards Paul.
  15. I shortened the straps, the strap ends were stitched so an easy job or make your own from Pirelli webbing. As said piano wire is springy and if the bends are not to sharp will not crack. Regards Paul

Or port and left has the same number of letters. Regards Paul
  17. When I did my seats I remade some of the wires with piano wire sourced from a local model shop. Regards Paul
  18. Thanks for the replies. Regards Paul
  19. MOT my Vitesse every year, like the idea of a piece of paper saying I'm as conscientious as any other owner of a car over three years old. Regards Paul.
  20. Rev counter needle a bit wavy so tried to remove inner cable to lubricate it but inner will not pull out from either end with both ends disconnected. Recently lubricated speedometer cable no problem pulled out from instrument end. Just seemed a bit strange. Regards Paul
  21. My modern with ally wheels 120nm about 88ftlb, Vitesse steel wheels 38-42ftlb, numbers from handbook and WSM. Regards Paul.
  22. Didn't see it mentioned, if ordering new or reusing the head nuts and washers make sure they are hardened as there are some poor quality ones out there for sale. Have had a head nut, from one of the main suppliers, strip, when replacing the head on my 2L Mk1 Vitesse used mini flanged head nuts as mentioned on this forum. Early 2L Mk1 blocks used a different crankshaft from later ones and a different fuel pump, just the arm is different, it's position is higher up on the block. A pack of twenty mini nuts will do the head and rocker pedestals. Best of luck with the rebuild. Paul.
  23. Thanks for the suggestion, have some floor protection sheet, bit like corrugated cardboard but made from black plastic, but not sure it's rigid enough. Job delayed because I've decided to tidy up the wiring exposed when I removed the old board. Suppose it's par for the course, start one job and find some more. Regards Paul.
  24. Has anyone found a suitable alternative for the Millboard as I've found it has a tendency to break where folded?. Mine is very tatty at the moment and I'm looking to replace it, it is available from the usual suspects but wondered if there was something more durable. Many thanks Paul.
  25. I bought some stainless steel tube, to cut new spacers, and stainless nuts and bolts for the clamps. Regards Paul.
