  1. Did this job on my Vitesse last year, http://forum.tssc.org.uk/topic/1918-diff-inner-axle-shafts/, bought bearings, standard metric size readily available, and seals from specialist suppliers. Do not know if the parts used on my Vitesse diff would fit your Herald one. Regards Paul
  2. Adjusted my rack by removing shims under the big nut, the one the grease nipple fits into, but a bit of a balancing act to be tight enough in the middle and not to tight at full lock. As Pete said some parts are available to rebuild your own. Just had a look at Rimmers website, seem to be fewer parts available since I last looked but a lot more rack options or am I being cynical. Regards Paul
  3. Find the best way with my Vitesse is to turn it over on full choke leave it for a few minutes then it usually starts easily. Just like me it does not like being rushed first thing. Regards Paul
  4. The number only tells you the origin of the case, it might have been rebuilt with a different ratio. Regards Paul
  5. Should hide the blood for those of us who are retired and extremely dangerous to ourselves. Regards Paul
  6. While I agree it would be easier with the bonnet off, you will have the electrics to all the front lights to disconnect and reconnect and realign the bonnet which can be a right pain. I have an I beam across a double garage with a rolling trolley a one ton chain hoist and a load leveller, would not try it without these. All comes down to what equipment you are going to use. Regards Paul
  7. I have a MK1 2Lt Vitesse and have removed the engine, gearbox with overdrive in one lump without removing the bonnet but it is tight. It depends on your lift equipment as the unit has to be rotated near the vertical. Picture unit as removed. Regards Paul
  8. My first car was a 64 Herald 12/50 sun roof never leaked, in the winter no matter how wet or icy the rest of the car after a drive the sun roof was always dry. That was where the heat went so perhaps something to consider. Regards Paul
  9. Who needs exercise classes when you own a Triumph. Regards Paul
  10. I use GL4 EP80/90 for both as GL5 as I understand it will attack yellow metals, think it is ok for one but not the other. Sure you will soon get a difinitive answer on here. http://forum.tssc.org.uk/topic/301-hypoid-oil/?tab=comments#comment-2073 Regards Paul
  11. Seems a good price, states as MK2 but think it is MK1 or is the only difference the missing bars to hold the MK2 grill. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-Vitesse-mk-2-front-panel/322957058644?hash=item4b31bda254:g:ekUAAOSwI8laP-J3 Regards Paul
  12. Surprising how many things bought by wieght or sheet size are still a direct conversion of the original imperial size or wieght. Felt I had to leave work when three of the younger employees told me that their combined age was still less than mine. Regards Paul
  13. No upmarket washing machine when I was young, just a tub with a gas ring to heat the water and a wooden pole to stir the clothes. The gas connection was a flexible pipe with a rubber connector to push on to a tap on the side of the gas cooker. Health and safety, what's that?. Regards Paul
  14. Been looking at a clutch arm I have which has a crack in the post seat. Have twisted the post arm pins, which I assume have a shoulder and are riveted in, to move the flat worn on them and intend to fix them with a spot of weld. Intend to run an angle grinder through the crack in the dimple and repair it with weld and refit the clip with a nut and bolt then mushroom the bolt to stop the nut loosening. Seems to me that the only bit that can not be repaired is the clip, does it have to be spring steel? or would a piece of mild or stainless work if backed with a piece of spring. Regards Paul
  15. Securon make a model where the retractor has adjusters so it can be fitted at any angle within reason. I have a pair fitted to my Vitesse convertible with the retractor on the rear wheel arch. Regards Paul
  16. I have an old Felco chain hoist which lifts fine and despite cleaning and greasing sometimes sticks on lowering. Looking at the ratchet and pawl alignment I'm beginning to wonder if there should be a brake disc on both sides instead of the one I have. Looking on the net can not find an answer, if any one has one could they look at let me know. Many thanks. Regards Paul
  17. Gearbox now back together, went to see Mike Papworth very helpful and informative he spent some time checking my bits and advised me on what to replace, just cluster and third gear. As Pete said a few different clusters with the difference not obvious on some of them. Only way I have of checking my work is to swop boxes and take the car for a drive but will try it first before connecting the prop shaft. Regards Paul
  18. I have a MK1 2L Vitesse and ended up using a new old stock gasket for the manifold to head joint as the new ones did not last long. The NOS one is thicker and has reinforcing around some of the holes, another case of inferior repro parts. Gasket was fitted dry. Regards Paul
  19. Best technique with I have found with my Mk1 2L Vitesse is to turn it over on the starter with full choke, leave it for a minute or so then usually fires first time. After starting for the first time in a day all subsequent restarts are fine. Regards Paul
  20. Be careful the cut edges an be as sharp as razor blades. Regards Paul
  21. If you have removed the seat rails it could have been used as a washer for a bolt that goes through the floor pan. Bodge or recycling by previous owner?. Regards Paul
  22. I would suggest a magnetic drain plug for the gearbox, just check the clearence when fitted. Have welded large nuts, filed to fit over the square end first, to the standard tapered drain plugs on my Vitesse. Regards Paul
  23. GL4 then you can use it everywhere its needed, these days it seems to be 80/90 EP. Regards Paul
  24. Just remember you always meet the wisest one after the event. Regards Paul
  25. Pictures are a four syncro box for a 2L Vitesse, the centre of the pin on the reverse lever in the gearbox is about 2.25 inch from the inside of the back of the box. The reverse idler is all the way back against the spacer. The lid goes back on with the selector and gearbox components as in pictures. If you want any more pictures etc. the box is on the bench in the garage. Regards Paul
