  1. Ah....ok, thanks Pete. It'll be interesting to see what's inside this one when we get the head off then! Samantha.
  2. Just got back from collecting an engine that i want to check over and fit in my 13/60 and looked in to see if there was any info on codes.....so very handy this thread. The engine I collected is GE80091HE...and has twin carbs, so I guess it came from a Spitfire. I've just been out to check the engine currently fitted, and it is GE593E.....not LE or HE....just E on the end. Is that a normal code? Just curious, thanks. Samantha.
  3. Great guys....thanks.......the GD engine not looking worthwhile then.....so will start looking at the GK unit as a temp fix....or just get on with the GE unit and get my bicycle out!! Samantha.
  4. Thanks for the input guys, sorry for delay, been away over the weekend.............so, just to clarify; The car arrived to me as "being a bit smoky" and I was told it had overheated on the motorway. This I believe as there was an AA recovery/fix invoice. I replaced the rad and flushed through and she runs beautifully, apart from definitely burning oil. The engine (and gearbox) are very clean (and with new paint) and both I'm sure are recon units, but probably fitted a long time ago, and the car left standing.......there is physical evidence and paperwork that suggest this. As we haven't had the engine apart, I can't say what is causing the oil burning as yet, so the plan was to see if I can get my spare GK engine sorted and fit it temporarily whilst pulling apart the GE unit, just so I have transport...... I also have a GD code unit that could go straight in, but not sure if the dizzy etc will swap over on that......any thoughts on that folks? I'm torn between taking the car off the road for a month or so and sorting it all in one go at the expense of other non-car jobs and leaving me without transport during the good weather, or keeping her running on a spare engine and taking my time sorting the "good" engine and doing the other stuff that I'm supposed to be doing........but I'm too old and achy to be doing this sort of thing in the depths of winter, so need to make a decision soon! Samantha.
  5. The GK is the potential temp motor........I want to sort the GE motor, which is the original, I believe, and possibly recently rebuilt.........had some possible overheating issues, and needs sorting before too much damage done I think......was pondering on doing some tuning too
  6. Hi Guys 'n' Gals, Just a quick Q........do the GE and GK code Herald engines share all the same ancillaries without a problem please?.....got one of each engine, but only got the ancillaries currently attached to the GE code motor, and thinking of doing an engine change to rectify the oil burning issue with the GE block and possibly keep the car on the road whilst sorting it, but using the GK block......not a problem if this won't work as I'll just get a litre of midnight oil and do a few late nights, .........but would be nice to do it at a leisurely pace! Thanks in advance, Samantha.
  7. Thanks guys.....yes, the tape/vacuum idea is good.....I think I may take the roof off to do the work, as the rear deck panel needs attention, and I can do the sunroof and some sort of improvised headlining (how about some nice orange shag fur from the 70s ) more easily that way. It may be a while before I get a chance to do it though.....gives me time to find a roof anyway Samantha.
  8. Hmmm.......plenty of food for thought there then, thank you everyone for your input so far. I'm not too bothered about originality and devaluation (yes, I can hear the screams of the purists from here, sorry) because the car is never going to be a show winner unless she had a lot of time and effort and money put in, but she is a very sound car and I intend keeping her (Hetty) a long time and redoing body/paint myself. She will always be an every day driver, so I want her to fit my needs, and if I ever wanted to have an original roof again, I think there will be a lot around, as they tend to outlast many of the other parts.. I have always had misgivings about a Webasto, for noise and leaks, but they look fabulous and are great when in traffic or local slow motoring (had one on my Scimitar). At the same time I don't like the pop up look on that age of car as it looks wrong.......but the advantage for ventilation (especially when parked) is of great value to me, as I have High Functioning Autism, and the sensory overload driving with windows open is too much for me (and convertibles are pretty much out altogether unfortunately), but tilt and slide, or a tilt and pop out are ok I find on our modern car. Unfortunately, I'm on a fairly tight budget, so I expect it will have to be a used pop up/out in the end. I will make sure that the cutting is very carefully done then, judging by your warnings, thank you........now to set about finding the right type! Samantha
  9. Hi Folks, Our Herald 13/60 has a very tired headlining, and I was pondering on the idea of fitting a budget used sunroof from a small car of some sort as yet unknown. Has anyone done this before? If so does anyone have a recommendation as to what might fit? I'm guessing the relatively narrow centre section of a Herald may be problematic in finding a sunroof of the right width? I'm lucky enough to have a neighbour who is a fabricator and builds race cars, so fitting should be no problem.....and he even changes out roof panels on various small cars for some of his builds, so possibly a source of a sunroof if I'm lucky. Alternatively I was wondering about finding a complete saloon roof with a Webasto already fitted, but I'm guessing this would be hard to find, and not a cheap option! Any thoughts anyone please? Samantha.
  10. Thanks Pete, I was wondering about the reserve tank.....not really needed to be honest, but I'll investigate anyway Samantha.
  11. Hi Folks, Does anyone know the ancient history of our 13/60 saloon, NHY 626F please. I know it was in Bristol some 20 years ago, and then South Wales , but I don't know any details of that period, or where it was the first 30 years or so. We bought the car in South London/Surrey from a club member who had owned it for a couple of years, having brought it back from Wales. I'm hoping it may be known to other club members in the past who can tell me more. I suspect it was part restored (maybe fully restored mechanically) and then left sitting, probably garaged, for many years, as there are many things that point to this. Any information would be very welcome, thank you. Samantha.
  12. Well, my neighbour certainly managed a decent job on the tank, as I hope the pic shows, and all at an exceptionally reasonable price......but I don't think he wants to do another one like it! He removed the drain pipe as requested, so a neater fit, and once a grommet is fitted, that'll be one less hole in the floor too. He also did a very neat job welding a long patch over the transverse front boot floor seam, which I think had suffered due to the fuel leak. Just waiting for a weather window to get the tank fitted now ....and then on to sorting out the other jobs. Samantha
  13. Great.....many thanks, I think I've got all the info I need now......just need some decent weather to get out there and get on with it! May have to wait until the other jobs are done I think! Samantha
  14. Ah.....fairly simple then by the sound of it Many thanks, Samantha
