  1. Pete H; good suggestion regarding one of the rollers slipping during assembly. That theory would add up looking at the evidence, although we'll never know for sure.

Johny, I'm going tonsee what the machine shop says today. I'll report back on what they say. The bore size will be set by the undamaged part at the other end of the lay cluster. This is in perfect condition as it was new when the box was overhauled.

  2. So, the box was stripped today. Pretty typical Triumph gearbox maladies I'm afraid. The front needle rollers on the layshaft had failed; I'm pretty sure the rollers are supposed to be round, not square 😳

The rear rollers had also started to eat into the shaft,  it at least those were round.

The layshaft is junk, it had to be cut in two to remove it without causing damage to the case, and worse the inner part of the lay cluster where the rollers run is damaged.

Looking at the price and availability of the lay cluster, I'm going to investigate having a sleeve fitted, but I won't know if that's viable until I've visited the local machine shop tomorrow.

On the up side, everything else on the box and o/d is very good, but then you'd expect that from a gearbox which was overhauled 3500 miles ago.

  3. Any gearbox experts out there?

My MkII Vitesse gearbox is making a growling noise in 1st and reverse. The noise does not happen all the time and sometimes it is quiet.

When it is making the noise, it is loudest on overrun. The bearings sound fine.

The box has only done about 5000 miles since full overhaul (but is wll out of any warranty)

Can anyone give me some ideas of what components I should be looking at in particular?

  4. Agree with both of you regarding the guarantee. My Bells sports exhaust system has split along the main straight pipe, but I don't feel I can return it as I fitted it in 1993 🤣 I still have the reciept from the club as well!

I was more after a stated life/change routine for the hoses. I'm a chartered engineer,  and I like design lives, mean time between failures, and all that anorak stuff 😁

  5. Please, I'm not after personal opinions or guesses - I can do that for myself - but does anyone know what the life of a Goodrich braided brake hose is?

Despite Googling, I cannot find a definitive answer, except that they have a lifetime guarantee. Pretty sure they are not designed to last forever though!

    Thanks

  6. It's time for new pads on my Vitesse. I've had Mintex 1144 fitted for the last 10 years and have been very pleased with them, so want the same again.

Is it just a case of buying the correct pads for a Girling type 16 caliper, or are the pads model specific?

    Thanks

  7. Looking at the insurance values for Triumphs in club magazine, I can't see any for the Courier van.

Does anyone know the rough value of these? Same as the 1200 &12/50 but plus a percentage for rarity value?

  8. Hi,

I picked this prop up as part of a bunch of spares that came with a Vitesse 6 many years ago.

Problem is, I'm not sure what car it is for.

With the sliding joint extended it is 104cm long, with the joint compressed 99.5cm (measurements between flanges).

The flange diameter is about 99mm or 3" 7/8.

3/8" diameter bolts in the flanges.

    Can anyone identify it please?

  9. All I'd add is that in my experience this is not the result of the use of silicon fluid, but is caused by another problem.

If I was a betting man I'd say poor quality rubber in the seals, but obviously difficult to say from.a distance.

I'm another one who's used silicone fluid for early 20 years with no problems either with component failure or with pedal feel.

  10. I never really understand why people buy a classic from a dealer, although I believe that increasing numbers are. The advantages of buying a modern used car from a dealer just aren't there with a classic dealer (OK, they might be in theory, but in practice I'm not sure many are relevant to classics), and in nearly all cases the dealer is simply flipping the car having done very little to it.

Am I missing something? Is there an advantage to using a classic dealer?

    Glad that is all sorted

Afraid I was away at the Club Triumph awards dinner at the weekend, all rather busy.... and no, not in the Spitfire. I had to deliver a dolomite interior!

Those little denso alternators just look so tiny, but what a great bit of kit.

In comparison, they are tiny! The pulley is almost exactly the same diameter as the ACR though.
