  1. Personally unless I knew it had done a very high mileage Id inspect the clutch (pressure plate fingers, friction plate thickness, thrust bearing etc) and with that plus the annual mileage I'm planning to do make a decision. Apart from the cost theres always a not inconsiderable risk when renewing something that the replacement will give problems....

  2. It can be called a closed system in that theres not really any coolant loss when compared to ancient evaporative systems.

Any air pockets in the circuit are shrunk as the system heats up and pressurises and get pushed round to the top of the radiator. Then if the air bubble isnt too big its expelled to the overflow bottle along with excess coolant because the coolant on heating expands slightly and this easily induces enough pressure to lift the rad cap. When the coolant temperature increase stops (engine up to temperature) the rad cap is closed by its spring and the pressure that this maintains in the system is sufficient to stop the coolant boiling. Later, on cooling, the coolant volume decreases slightly until it produces a small vacuum and opens the inner valve in the rad cap to draw coolant back from the bottle.

In this way as long as the bottle has sufficient level the rad and overflow pipe should always be completely full of coolant👍

  3. I would argue yes, with the filters that fit our cars, smaller means less filtration surface area. Maybe modern filters are small but theyve found a way to increase that area or is it that modern engines just run cleaner? Anyway less area means blocking up quicker however as classic cars normally do few miles filters are changed for time not mileage reasons so filter size doesnt matter.

  4. Hi, have you changed the fuel pump at all? An electric or replacement mechanical type have been known to produce extra pressure which can cause the needle valve to leak. Also how clean is your fuel system? There should be a gauze filter in the fuel pump that will show if much debris is coming from the fuel tank and which could then stop the needle valve closing properly. Also I believe theres been issues with certain replacement needle valves and perhaps a search on here would throw up some useful threads.

Finally leaving the car for long periods can let the float chambers dry out through evaporation which can cause the float to stick and allow an overflow although this usually occurs on the first start up....

  5. Id be surprised if the 165 80s give you an arch clearance problem (assuming you have wheels with the correct offset of course) as its normally width that does that. The biggest risk on increasing diameter is contact with the bulkhead on sharp turns and even there I dont think the <10mm increase will be an issue in this case...

  6. I like 165 80 13 on my Vitesse as I think they look good and are bigger diameter than the 175 you mention which would help a bit to correct your speedo error. This site is very good for checking different combinations of tyres and diffs (the OD itself doesnt make any difference to speedo reading):

The only downside is that this size is getting harder to find and the choice is pretty limited....

China is capable of manufacturing very high quality parts for anything.

Sadly the Western suppliers ask for cheap as they think they can only sell cheap. WE are to blame not the Chinese.

If you ask for cheap and buy cheap you will only ever have cheap.  Change your habits.

Its also quite possible to ask for quality, pay for quality and get cheap - trust has to be earned. Also its not just the design and manufacturing but the quality control that is needed so that duff parts dont get to the customer....

  8. Trouble is its so difficult to convince people the extra cost is actually getting them better quality! The Chinese will have to do what the Japanese did at the beginning: improve quality and still sell cheap. It takes years but eventually when people have accepted the high quality of a brand the manufacturer can then start to increase their prices and make a decent profit....

  9. Yes I see it looks like the 13/60 has a lower first gear than all the 1500 engined vehicles (all other forward ratios are the same) so it should be able to start off with the 3.63 diff without undue slipping of the clutch but then itll have to be revved a bit before selecting second....

  10. Is overdrive essential? I know its considered desireable but could a 1500 Herald pull a higher ratio diff like the Spitfire does? This would save the not inconsiderable cost of prop and gearbox and should make 1st and other gears more suitable...

  11. I meant reliable in that things dont operate if you get an earth fault. A good example is the car interior light which if you have an earth fault in any of the wiring from the light itself (quite a lot of cabling) switches the light on and as its not dependant on the ignition switch can flatten your battery if it happens without you noticing....
