After several decades the rubber boots have given up the ghost. Rather than just replace the boots, which I have available, I suspect it is time to change the tie rod ends and then get the tracking checked at the same time. Can anyone recommend a suitable supplier of decent ones, ideally with the grease nipple fitted unless I am persuaded otherwise. Dick

In my working life having been winched in and out of helicopters to and from ships too many times for my own good a failure by the flight deck crew to earth the winch wire before clipping on was greeted by much bad language and more. Dick

Screwfix have it, and I think I saw it in Halfords; works a treat in my experience. Dick

IIRC Mark Field of ex-Jigsaw Racing did much of the restoration.

Did mine many years ago drilling the backplate to avoid pulling, and thus disturbing, the hubs. Do not recall having to take the hub off the front but it was a long time ago. Freelander studs drawn in tight, and as Prophet says ideally use open ended nuts for an easy check all is well. Dick

Try a destroyer at 3,500 tons; soup and stew the order of the day and I used to sanction putting the deep fat fryer out of bounds. But what has this to do with an Aldon ignition - nothing I know. Dick

Gave up sailing/racing big stuff when I left the RN; now a much smaller, older Cornish Shrimper but easily sailed single-handed with reflective Condor moment!

I bought my latest boat from a chap who had sailed for decades and suddenly started to get a rash on his hands very easily, to the extent that even handling a shore line that may have just touched some anti-fouling bought him days of grief. Dick

Colin, As you say it's a gamble, like much of life, but based on the past 16 or so years of attending Le Classic and comments on this Forum people have a habit of leaving the booking late and finding there are no slots available on their chosen ('assumed') route/date/time.

My last conversation with Angie was that the club as waiting for the organisers to publish prices so that booking details could be promulgated. Over many years experience I booked the ferry (Portsmouth-Caen) as soon as the timetable was promulgated a couple of months ago. Dick

That is still the routine and progress is periodically checked, usually by the Master At Arms, to ensure a full set is blossoming; if it is not forthcoming then it is back to shaving. 'Fancy' trimming is not permitted however it should be neatly trimmed so no ZZ Top lookalikes. That approach also ensures that an adequate seal is made if wearing a gas respirator etc. In Prince Philip's time in the Service officers rarely had beards, with the exception of submariners, and certainly not Commanders in command or officers in the Royal Yacht! Not sure if it still the case but I had to formally write to my Captain to request permission to get married to ....; this was to avoid the unforeseen outcome of a run ashore with an inappropriate lady! I was fortunate to be the Commanding Officer of HMS GLASGOW and as Royal Yacht escort for the State visit to Russia (St Petersburg) in October 1994. It was revelation to be so close to HM, and Prince Philip, for days of high ceremonial when they retained a sense of humour and putting people at their ease with a kindly word for all. It was doubly amazing that she recalled meeting me when presented with my CBE, perhaps because her husband had, with smile, exclaimed in a very loud voice "He's got a beard, they've (officers with me) all got bloody beards"! Had a long chat with Julian at Duxford and he is well aware of the disquiet. Suggested he keeps a weather eye on this thread on the Forum to stay abreast of thoughts and issues but, quite correctly, these things take time with a new man in the seat. Pete's comment on rising prices is very apposite as it is something that is challenging Julian on almost every item he is dealing with. Dick
