  1. Pete Curious, why did you change from a swinger spring back to a fixed spring? cheers Mike
  2. Not yet. Have taken off the drive shafts and am now ready to get the diff out. Its a very early 1968 Herald 13/60 and I don't think the diff has ever been out.... I was planning to change the UJ flanges on the drive shafts rather than change the quarter shafts (I have some spare UJ flanges and want to change the UJ's). But will decide once I have everything on the garage floor. So far everything has been tight but has come to pieces but I am not looking forward to removing the 2 rear bolts holding the diff onto the chassis... I am out today so that will be tomorrow fun! I have a growing list of bits, bolts, and stuff that will need replacing. While its all off the car I will strip down and overhaul the rear brakes. In the last few years the Herald has really suffered from a lack of maintenance, now that the TR6 has gone and I am down to 1 Triumph it can have some TLC. Its not too bad as its just passed its MOT (unlike my daughters 2006 Focus that needs a new sill....). cheers mike
  3. Thanks. I was going to use a 3.63 but I have a VGC 3.89 in the garage, think it should be ok with the OD and 1500 engine. Hadnt thought about swapping the rear housing might do that. cheers mike
  4. About to fit a 3.89 GT6 diff to my 1968 13/60 herald. I noticed that the Herald diff has 46 studs holding the spring to the diff, the GT6 on has 4 studs. Do I need 6 or will4 do? If I need 6 I can drill and tap the diff housing but wonder if I need to? BTW the herald has a 1500 engine and OD gearbox, I will change the drive shaft flanges to fit the larger output flanges on the new diff. cheers mike
  5. Driven the Herald around with it doing auto tune and seems to be running nicely (slightly rich but am happy while I play with it). Sorted the idle valve, faulty TIP122 on the board changed it out and ran it on the simulator while looking at the signals, all working well. Tried it on the car and its great. I realised that I have the valve round the wrong way (but don't think it matters) what it means is that I can adjust how much the valve is open when it powered off. There is a small allen key bolt in the end of the, valve this can be adjusted to set the airflow when the valve is off. Getting there and enjoying it! mike
  6. fitted the new injectors (155 cc/min rather than 200cc/min) and reset the maps and she is much better. Drove her to the TSSC/CT meeting on Monday night. Yesterday drove about 30 miles with the auto tune running and she is great. Runs much better than she did on carbs. Still a little bit rich but will leave it rich while I play, saver than running too lean. Cant get the Bosch Idle valve working correctly, and think the driver on the board is faulty so have ordered a new one (TIP122). Booked in for an MOT next week so need to check over the mechanical bits! cheers mike
  7. Roger agree. But I have made my own air box that is a close fit to the throttle bodies which mean I cant fit the longer injectors that you have used, without modifying the air box! Yep stupid design... However I have found some short low flow rate ones on ebay and have ordered those! mike
  8. Thanks for the helpful replies. Didn't have a chance to play with the car today as the granddaughter was around with her mum (Libby, GT6, 10CR) making marmalade...... And taking Libby's ford focus for an MOT, not looking good as I found some holes in the sills.... I could reduce the pressure with my injectors (suggested by Nick) to reduce the flow rate or get some lower flow rate injectors. cheers Mike
  9. Darren thanks. I think those are ideal and cheap! Are you running a 1300 engine? There are a bit longer than the747 I am using and will run into the airbox I have built! Poor design.... cheers mike
  10. Clive you are right it is very sensitive to pulse width. I am using Bosch 747 injector at 200cc/min @3bar a bit big for a 1500 Triumph engine. If I use the default VE map it runs very rich using the default dwell time, if I reduce the dwell time I start to get a decent AFR reading. I can get it running ok with a reduced VE map (multiplying everything by 0.5). but then the VE map values are lower than what others have used, that's why I want to review the injector I have been using. All a bit of a long learning curve, but quite fun. Mike
  11. I know a few people have fitted Megasquirt EFI systems to there Heralds and Spitfires. I am interested in what injectors you have used (ideally model and flow rates). I have got my MS3 system working on a 1500 engine in a Herald but feel the injectors are too big so want to change them and am interested in what others are using. Cheers mike
  12. I have been fitting EFI to my Herald. On Tuesday I powered up the fuel pump to set the system pressure. A couple of leaks from joints, soon sorted by nipping up the joint but the only remaining none R9 rubber hose (from the original feed to the carbs, I had forgotten about this hose) was leaking badly. Fuel was coming thru the body of the hose, it was completely porous. This wasn't leaking before I drained the fuel from the car so I think its had dried out and then started leaking as soon as there was fuel in the hose. So the answer is yes its a real problem, if you haven't got R9 hose you will need them. I have also brought hose from AFS very good price and delivery! mike
  13. When I built my garage I insulated the walls and roof. Best thing I did, I have a single 1kW electric oil heater (thermostatically controlled) and it keeps the garage dry and warm and means I can use it all year round. My only regret is not to dig a pit while it was being built and should have made it bigger... mike
  14. I am going to be in the Lake district on drive it day (24 April) wondering if there any Triumph meetings/drivies arranged for that day? cheers mike
  15. watch out for the Vulcan, it is its last flying year... Seen its twice this year and its fav. mike
  16. I have his number its is Peter Harvey 0152760401. Was a few years ago but might be worth a call. regards mike
  17. had a Britax sunroof fitted to my GT6 (mk3). It was very good, I had done all the insulation but wanted to choice of having the car 'open'. I used a guy in the midlands who had all the bits to make a new one. He did a very good job. I did try to buy one off Ebay but could not bring myself to cut a hole in the roof..... Also the Britax roof is not as thick as the Webasto (which uses a wooden frame) so you do not loose any head room in the GT6. Personally I loved it and was pleased with the result, btw the cost was close to a £1k with everything including a new head lining so not cheap. regards mike
  18. Thanks guys. next question what's the different between standard, semi sports and full sports systems (as per TSSC web site)? No pictures so don't know what the difference is.... Will phone the shop to ask but would appreciate people comments experiences. Cheers mike
  19. so do you think putting a standard herald on what effect the performance at all? Never really understood what difference an exhaust system makes, probably just an illusion, if its noisier it must be faster cheers mike
  20. I know its a popular conversion but what exhaust do people use for a 1500 engine with tubular exhaust manifold in a Herald? I have a mix of pipes and silencer (unknown make) it works but is a bit loud and would like something quieter. cheers mike
