    Exhaust manifold

    Whilst doing the brakes on the herald estate, noticed the exhaust has seen better days - awaiting lead time from the club for a new exhaust, but the exhaust manifold has obviously been a problem in the past as the joint is bolted rather than studs and nuts, is this an issue or do i just replace the bolts? If just a case of replacing the bolts do they need to be anything special? (have tried to get a replacement manifold but I'm struggling at present to find a decent one in stock anywhere)
  2. Thanks Colin, self doubt I guess creeping in, I can remember them being a pain to do and in front of the shoes just seemed too easy. Really could do with getting an old copy of Haynes manual as I have the soft back one and the images aren’t great
  3. Given the cracking weather I thought I’d have a quick check over the herald, noticed the brake fluid had dropped a bit, leak on rear wheel cylinder. So stripped the brakes, replace the hose and the cylinder, cleaned the adjuster. Came to put the springs back on the shoes and the manual differed to what was on the car the lower photo is as it was, the top photo is where I have put the springs - which is correct or does it not matter? the split pin has been installed (just after the photo taken)

    It’s a 13/60. It worked ok before the service and after the service until the condenser packed up. I’ll try upping the revs to start with. Stalls when you pull up as though the tickover isn’t high enough?

    As I have been made redundant it’s given me time to sort the herald estate, we had it serviced a while back, it broke down and fault traced to faulty condenser so that was swapped out. Now the car will start and drive on choke, but once its warm if the choke is fully in the car cuts out, it will run if the choke is partly out (about 1/4 inch). does tye carb need richening up a tad or is the timing slightly off? theres going to be loads of stupid questions over the next few weeks.

    Need to order a few bits to work on the herald, normally pop in to fitchetts or paddocks when we visit family, however this time I need to have the stuff delivered, I’ve found MeV spares who’s prices look extremely competitive or Ang spares (eBay) any comments re quality?

  9. I need to repair the low tension lead inside the distributor, is the cable standard wire whilst I wait for a replacement

Herald was serviced, been to 2 shows, used last weekend and were on the way to a show today, started fine, ran ok for about 1/2 mile then starting running rough, eventually lost power going up hill and died. Not sure where to start, checked points, ok, replaced wire to LV side as it was poor condition. Started and it misfired and no power and then cuts out. If anything it seemed to get to temperature quicker than normal (but it is warm today). Any ideas? I’m thinking timing or condenser (I may put the old plugs back in)
  13. I think the car is on 4.5 rims as standard. There’s 2 parts number listing for the trims, one for the saloon / convertible and one for the estate. I’m guessing the parts I have been supplied is for a herald car not an estate
  14. I have purchased some wheel trim rings for the estate, but I cannot get them to fit - it’s almost as off they are too shallow. Has anyone got the recess dimension

    The weather has been good today so I decided it was time to drain the tank as the car won’t run on the fuel in the tank. It’s a very strange colour - best described as straw like colour, tank removed and I’ll get it cleaned at work tomorrow. Gave me an excuse to check the fuel line only to find rubber hoses held in place with zip ties. So I’ll replace with ethanol proof pipe and clips. Hopefully next weekend the car will run off the tank!

    Well the carb is cleaned, rebuilt and now fitted, however I emptied the fuel from the pump to the carb, and it’s an odd colour. So I tried a separate fuel supply and she’s running again! The top jar is new fuel and the bottom jar is the old fuel - plus I clean a load of crud out of the fuel pump. Just need to empty the fuel tank and give her a service.

    In the end I took the carb off the car so I could have another look at the issue and clean out the float again, I’d left the carb on the bench in the garage and when I stripped it today, the residual fuel had gone to a jelly like substance and it felt like the carb was damp with water, I’ve cleaned it out again and put it back together. It’s been suggested that I should get a jar and pump some fuel through and leave it to stand for a while and it will separate if the ethanol has split form the fuel - is this worth doing?

    I’d thought about just before the fuel pump (I want to fit a fuel filter anyway) and then pump the fresh fuel through, just guess I need to empty the float chamber again

    It turns over as normal but won’t fire (which is really odd as the herald was always the easy one to start) it did initially try and fire but just spluttered and stopped, a squirt of easy start will get it to try to fire just can’t get it to run. when I first took the carb off there was a list of crud in it, I blew everything through so I assumed it was clean, hence why I’m thinking the fuel may be stale. Just don’t know how to check it.

    Well a disheartening day, put the carb back on and still didn’t start, so new dizzy cap and rotor arm fitted, points gap re checked all as per manual. Now stumped what to try next. Is it stale fuel or have I set the carb completely wrong?

    Finished for Xmas at lunch time and it was dry so I decided to try and start sort the car, tried what Jonny suggested, and it was solid so decided to take the carb off and have a look, it was filthy on the outside so guessing it’s not been off in a long time, the float was clagged in a grainy grit, the jet was blocked and there was a load of crud in the chamber so all cleaned out, waiting for another day to put it back together. I’ll probably be back with more questions as this is all new to me.

    Thanks Pete, that’s what I thought after looking at the parts manual but then on another site it showed the spring (and there’s not one fitted) Gully the only thing that’s changed is where the car is parked, it’s normally level but is now on a slope - fuel pump is clean and it pumps fuel (don’t know if it’s weak but it’s working). After the initial attempts to start it I expected it to smell of petrol, but it didn’t so I’m thinking crud in the carb. Investigations are periodic due to the weather

    the reason i was asked is i was tinkering today so removed the top of the carb and there is no damper spring installed - this is as the herald parts manual but the damper spring is listed in other publications.

    Is there a really basic guide to cleaning / service a stromberg cd150. I’m also thinking that’s shows all the components.

    I think I’ll probably remove the carb and clean it out. Annoyingly I doubt I’ll get the bits before xmas now. I guess I’ll be back with more questions over Xmas.
