  1. Hi nonmember. I have new points and condensor to fit so that is next job along with resetting the timing statically using the bulb method. I might invest in a new balast 1.5 ohm coil also.
  2. Hi pete. I am getting confused too. The coil fitted currently is a lucas and came with the car. It measured 2 ohms across the low voltage windings. I am misfiring when hot around 4000 rpm with occasional miss around 3500. The coil fitted last week was removed from my sprint and was supposidy a lucas sports ballast coil. It measured 3 ohms. Misfire when hot at much lower rpm.. Worked OK on the sprint. As far as I can tell the gt6 has a ballast system. I. E. It measures 6 volt or thereabouts across coil with points closed and ignition on. The coil feed ( +ve) when disconnected from coil measures 12 volt with ignition on. I guess this is correct and only drops to 6 when connected to the coil and measured in the circuit. I guess the original coil could be faulty. It is clearly very old. Yesterday it was so hot I could not have held it in my hand had I wanted to. Is this normal.? The issue is clearly temperature related. Car is OK for first few miles even with temp gauge on normal. When the car is really warmed through the trouble starts. So driving up edgehill (12% gradient and steepest longest hill in Warwickshire) set it off last night. In fact triumph used this hill for development back in the day.... After a engine off soak the misfire was worse and did not recover on the 5 mile drive home even driving carefully. Can you recommend a non lucas coil for ballast system? Will get there eventually.... Cheers John
  3. Hi tony No not yet. I purchased a new original type from td fitchet a few weeks ago. It's un branded and came in a plastic bag. Where do I get a bosch condensor from. What is part number? Yesterday when i was driving and playing with it I noticed the coil (original lucas) was so hot to touch. Even with nitrile gloves on I could not have held it in my hands. Do gt6 owners move the coil from engine to keep it cooler? I probably need to buy a new dizzy cap, ht leads and ballast coil plus rotor arm to eliminate them. Got new points to fit also. Getting a bit fed up with it now. Just want to drive...
  4. Hi pete. See photos attached. Does this look good to you?
  5. Hi pete It s a black rotor arm with a small rivet holding the spring to the brass contactor. The spindle of dizzy is solid. I can only turn the rotor arm anticlockwise against dizzy springs. It returns itself OK. But I can't turn it clockwise. Is this correct? The dizzy cap has made in England on the inside and looks new. I will post some photos in a few mins. John
  6. Hi No not replaced these yet. They look new. Just been out again after a 30 soak. Misfire at lower revs again and lasted the 6 miles home. It has to be something tat is affected by heat and once really hot doesn't Realy recover unti the car is cold. John
  7. Hi OK been out in gt6 again it does not misfire untill really hot. 10 miles plus. Once it was misfiring I stopped and tried adjusting the dizzy as you suggested. I concluded was in correct place. Its now pinking a little so I shall reset using static method as I did before once cooled. I also fitted hose laser flashers to the plugs. They flash when plug sparks. They all still spark when misfiring. I also tried the choke check. No change. So where now? Air leak? Sticky valve? Lack of fuel? I can't get my head around why with dolomite sports coil it misfired much Lower on rev range, and with what looks like original lucas coil it misfires at 4000 plus? Maybe it's faulty also? To be fair I don't need to rev it that high, but I want to..... Help.....
  8. I think I concluded my damper was not slipped, but can;t remember how I came to this conclusion. If I was to simply run engine at idle and adjust timing by rotating dizzy, what would I be looking for to get the optimum position ? High engine speed etc ? I have read that finding the highest engine speed and then retarding it a nats whisker is the way to go ? Is this true ? Which way is retard ? It does not have a vernier adjuster. How do I check the advance bob weights are working ? I know the vacuum module is holding pressure . Dizzy base plate seems tight but does move (plenty of lubrication in there). Fuel hoses all new, pump seemed ok and in good condition, tank cleaned out and treated with Acid to convert the rust (will take another look inside just to check). I feel that the misfire saga I am suffering from is temperature related. i.e. when its hot...... John
  9. Hi johnny Sort of yes. Trouble is with the old original set up I didn't really drive the car in any further than a mile here and there. And certainly I didn't rev it much as didn't want to be seen as anti social in my village... Noisy exhaust. The plugs I removed were mixed manufacturers. Colours of tips were light brown on 3 and slightly blacker on the other 3. Nothing that concerned me. I also broke one plug upon removal. Doh... The car doesn't pink at all and the misfire is behaving like a rev limiter of sorts, (it will rev past this point but not comfortably). Also it misfires at 4000 whist in neutral so no load. Difficult problems to fix on line I know.... John
  10. I have a phoenix wheel barrow system on mine almost new (currently less than 150 miles) that I want to sell so I can buy a quieter system...... Mk3.... Yes I am approaching older..... Need ear plugs........ Pm me if your interested John
  11. Hi all. Thank you all so much for all the advice re all the issues on my gt6. Re the misfire. I put the original coil back on and the random misfire when hot after a soak has gone. However...... I now have a misfire at 4000 rpm plus when thoroughly hot. I have checked compression. Ranges from 155 to 168 psi when cold. I have also fitted 6 new plugs. Ngk from chis witor. I have not yet changed the condensor. I also stupidly did not check the gaps on the new plugs. Ideas for high rpm misfires? Managed to drive 20 miles to and from the TSSC Oxford meet tonight. What a great bunch of nice people. Cheers John
  12. Hi All again. So I have checked my car and I reckon I have a ballast resistor. The Haynes manual shows the wiring and this seems to match what I have. I have measured the resistance of 3 coils. 1) Coil currently fitted to GT6 (previously removed from my Dolomite Sprint and known to be ok on the Dolomite). Sports coil Lucas. Gold in colour. 3 Ohm 2) Coil currently fitted to Dolomite Sprint. Badged as sports Lucas coil. New this year. Silver in colour. 2 Ohm. 3) Original Coil removed from GT6. Very old. Working. Lucas. Silver in colour. 2 Ohm. So would the 3 Ohm coil run hotter and potentially be overheating and causing the misfire when the engine has thoroughly warmed through? I measured the voltage at the end of the wire that connects to the + on the coil on both cars. In both cases this is battery voltage. I assume the ballast resistor limits the current when in use.. Thanks All.
  13. Would the fact that head not converted for unleaded or valve clearances or burnt valves cause this misfire when thoroughly hot? John
  14. HI Doug. I am not in front of the car right now, but I know from a photo of the solenoid that there is a total of 8 wires connected (includes the large cables). From the photo I can;t see white / pink. I can see white / red (or brown) and white & another colour (not able to clarify from photo). Both of these wires are on opposites to each other. See photo attached here . My Chassis no is KE22191 so not sure if this should have a Ballast or not. I was planning on ordering a new coil at lunch, but I may have to wait till I can double check at home....unless you can advise from the photo. (photo taken prior to bulkhead refurb and new soleniod being fitted. ) Cheers Doug. JOhn
  15. Also no separate resistors anywhere...
  16. Hi Mine is about 2017 from last car built so has the non rotoflex and brake servo etc. I only have 2 wires to coil though and can't see any 12 volt feedback wire fitted to solenoid (like on dolomite).
  17. Just had a thought. I fitted my used but good dolomite sprint sports coil (for ballast system) as the coil fitted on the gt6 looked rough. Does the gt6 mk3 have a ballast ignition system? Have I fitted an incorrect coil which is breaking down due to heat and over voltage? John
  18. Hi tony Yes was thinking this might be culpret, but have never had one fail before. But the issue arises when hot ad usually after a switch off and soak for say 45 mins. So it makes sense as condensor would take a while to heat through. Cheers John
  19. Hi again. It's never ending....... ... I have now clocked up 70 miles and on 2 separate occasions it has developed a misfire but only when engine gets thoroughly warmed through. I thought I found the culpret last week (corroded King lead connection in dissy cap). But today it did it again after 6 miles and an engine off soak. I recon its electrical as the misfire is very sudden and kinda sharp. Spark plugs look new, coil is my old dolomite gold lucas sports cv oil, dizzy cap looks new as does points and condensor. Ht leads...... Look OK and look new but I have not measured resistance yet. Any specific gt6 causes? Cheers all. John
  20. Hi iain Thanks for advice. I had kinda concluded that it was prob OK. I will increase idle speed a little as quite low. Also next oil fill time I will go for castrol 20 50 instead of halfords. Thanks again. John
  21. Hi anyone got a standard gt6 mk3 rear box and intermediate pipe silencer, ideally in stainless? I have a phoenix stainless wheel barrow exhaust (rear silencers and intermediate pipe (straight through), if swapping or part exchange is of interest. I am near Warwick if that helps... Cheers John
  22. I had the tank out last week and filled with acid to convert rust to stable coating. Was continually checking underside for leaks. The tank is painted (by me) with hammerite. Again I could seen evidence of a leak. I can say it smells more with car being in the sun. I also checked the sender seal which is OK. The breather is also on the filler neck. Also fitted new filer flap seal. The only bit not changed is the filler rubber tube..... Will have to go have another snif to see where strongest smell is..
  23. Hi all Thanks for your replies. I am using halfords classic 20/50 as all I could afford. Its green like the old duckums oil. Rattle on start up was minor and only about 1 to 1.5 seconds prior to the new oil and non return valve adaptor and spin on filter. With spin on there is no rattle. Bizarly no oil leaks either, unlike the incontinent dolomite that leaks from every seal despite new seals everywhere... OK I will leave the pressure spring alone. I have never seen 20 / 60 oil.... Thanks all. John
  24. HI All, Having cleaned out my tank and used Phosphoric Acid to disolve the rust, I have now noticed a smell of fuel in the car. I am convinced its not a tank leak, but I did notice the fuel filler neck rubber hose has some surface only cracks. Is it possible this hose is leaking fumes ? Is there a Ethanol resistant alternative ? Any other ideas ? Thanks All. John
