    It could be that the accelerator cable needs adjusting and is too short. Can you adjust and lengthen the cable at the bracket so that the nipple that fits into the throttle has a little bit of slack and not stopping the throttle from returning properly. This is probably the reason why it doesn't return to the throttle stops. In short the throttle is being held back by the accelerator cable. An easy fix if I'm right! Iain

  3. I agree, I'll do more digging but it does seem to vindicate DD advice not to be obsessed by standard settings. The variable is the modern fuels. I'll do more digging but after the Christmas festivities and I'm alcohol free I will be trialing advancing my timing as my engine is not in a happy place with standard 13 degrees BTDC. Iain
  4. I'm disagree I'm finding this a very interesting subject. I found a MG article which may give a clue as to why our engines running on modern fuel might run better with significantly more advance than standard. I'll try and download but Upshot was they achieved lower exhaust temperature and better timed run by advancing around 13 degrees more than standard and primarily caused by the slower burn rate of modern fuels. At standard timing the fuel is still burning when the exhaust is opening hence higher head, valve and exhaust temperatures. Iain
  5. I agree you know when something is right or wrong. I can feel if my modern cars tyres are 2-3psi down on pressure. My Vitesse engine did feel fine at around 20 BTDC. Iain
  6. A quick search (I know it's dangerous) and found the higher the octane the slower the burn or E5 should burn quicker than old 100 octane therefore require less advance? Iain
  7. In the search for the perfect ignition timing on my uprated engine with 10.5:1 CR I tried adjusting using the manifold vacuum method. Someone mentioned as I have K&N filters they do allow more air in so can muck up the tickover vacuum but in fer a penny. I was surprised when the highest stable reading was around 20 degrees advance! Nice tickover and felt very lively and responsive on the road and no pinking using Momentum 99 octane. I bottled out and put the timing back to 10 degrees. Some time later I had my distributor refurbed and advance curve calibrated by the Distributor Doctor for my engine spec. In a conversation he said you'll probably need more advance than standard to get the best performance. This was not what Google said for a higher CR! I rang back and questioned the higher advance and he said just keep on advancing until it pinks then back off or in other words the timing marks are there for info only! Mac aka Firefly let us know how it goes as I'm tempted to go down your route and rely on the engine feel and Distributor Doctor and not on Google search! Iain
  8. Very true but I live in a perfect world😂😂😂. If I remember my physics from 50 years ago Boyles Law explains the relationship of gas and volume. Perhaps that's why I'm compressible I'm full of gas! Iain
  9. Have you fitted the new lead on No1 cylinder? Out of curiosity I would have fitted No 6 on No1 to see if the timing was correct. Iain

    Do you mean the throttle stop screw on each carb? I would screw in the fast idle screw (choke) to give it clearance and get it out the way of the cam then balance the carbs by loosening off the throttle connector and screw in the throttle stops the same amount. Tighten the connector then screw out the fast idle to around 2-3mm gap to the cam. I don't know your throttle cable arrangement but if it has a nipple on the end ensure it's fully seated or your idle will be higher. Then give it an Italian tune up at Khan's 20mph.....!   11. It doesn't matter where the heat comes from it still heats up the bulkhead, gearbox cover, gear stick and occupant of Herald variants especially Vitesse and worse on GT6 as the cabin is smaller. Iain
  12. In the todays driving the gearbox cover does get hot as you can't drive at 50+mph all the time. In traffic the heat from the exhaust, engine compartment and heat blown back from the fan all goes to not only toast the bulkhead but also the gearbox cover. Even with Dodo Mat on the inside my cover gets hot. It's a fact of life on many classic cars. I talked to a Jensen CV8 owner who said the inside is unbearable in summer. Iain

Pascal's Law is A change in pressure at any point in an enclosed incompressible fluid at rest is transmitted equally and undiminished to all points in all directions throughout the fluid, and acts at right angles to the enclosing walls. Pressure = Force/Area You haven't changed the force so the pressure is the same. Iain
  14. It's easier with the black side panel removed. It's held on with a couple of nuts around the turret, screws at the front and rad. That's the way I did it as I don't have double uj fingers! Make sure the steering joint bolts are retightened properly as the steering function is pretty important...... Iain

    Good work well done! It doesn't leak but am I right in saying you used ptfe tape in the float valve thread or under the aluminium washer? Just make sure none can escape and create another problem. As to tuning it sounds OK but visually the rear air piston appears slightly higher than the front. First make sure oil in both dampers. If you have a carb synchroniser slacken off the throttle joint between the front and rear carbs and adjust air flow using the meter until the flow is the same at tick over. Tighten the joining piece and zoom up the road for a test drive! Iain

  20. First thought check plug leads are connected in the correct and positional order to the dizzy cap. Iain
  21. Did you have any transmission vibration? If not you are lucky. As said previously my car was undriveable over 45/50mph until I fitted the magic 3/8 dowel bolt! Iain

    Am I right in saying around 3mm thick packer is a good start? Frosties packet must also work but if you want a low sugar option try Quacker Oats😂 I gave up and fitted a Huco low pressure electric pump. Primes the bowls nicely. Iain

    If you take the float chamber off to clean or change the valve measure the float height which should be 18mm. Iain
