More spraying today . Gray Scotch wipe over the body and a few bits 600 grade. Two coats over the body and the other bits sprayed. Apart from a bug on the wing and a small run by the front of the passinger sill its come up well. Did have a disaster, my 1.3 gun decided to start dripping over the boot lid on the first pass! Had to strip out and put the bits in my 1.8 gun. Funny but it sprayed much better from this gun with the 1.3 needle and cup on it! I used a medium hardener due to the heat today, it did help it flow out better.

Been doing the refinishing but have been slowed down by a broken compressor (see other thread).
So onto the trim bits . Fed up with hanging up the bars i decided to make a frame to take them.

I have done many of these bits of trim in the past and ironically after i have made a frame to spray them i probably won't do any more!

    Many thanks folks.
Something Dave Twigger (OD Spares) advised that I'd not heard of before and may be useful for folk in the future with my symptom.
There is a narrow drilling/passage way between the side of the plug threads of the pressure relief valve and the solonoid area. This can block up with small dirt particles and need a rodding through.
Hoping mines just the solonoid, as won't have time to check this out at the mo.

Hi. I did this job about 8 years ago and can't remember what was where (I think there was some miss info on positioning then on either, Buckeye, Parts list, and WM then and still is).
I think I've established the canister filter is on the offside, though not sure if the Pressure Relief Valve is in the center (Pump on the nearside), or the tother way around. I have a memory that the PRV was central when I did it before?.
    Cheers, Dave

That just has to be filed under sh#t happens category! Reminds me in the early 90s my spit broke a king pin. Recovered home by 11pm  fitted a new one and ready for work the next morning.

Probably the worst part to do, is this the first time you have had to leave immobile? Soon be back on the road.

The engine was bought running in a '79 Spitfire by me 7 to 8 years ago incl carbs etc.
For like £450 (incl used diff etc !)

It a DM*****ESS engine (supplied spare 1500 block).
Oil pressure seems really good, everything original inside !
Did check crank bearings etc a few years ago.

    More done today.
One corner was rotten and a few more areas needed attention.

Sadly after 2 try's this evening to fit the windscreen .. we gave up.

Tomorrow we will try again !

I always wondered where engines came from, then i see yours hiding by the bush. My mum said i came from the gooseberry bush, i never believed her as she also said she was 29 when my sister turned 21! 🤣😅. Seriously though , well done, showing us how to keep a car on the road. Will you get straight on and restore the original engine or leave it for a while and run with the one you just put in.

RAL3016 or RAL2002 according to the internet….. the latter possibly on “more recent” product.
Don't worry, I’m not sure the concours judges carry paint swatches 😜

Baines are the ones. Correct profile, correct hardness, correct length.

Unlike certain others. Had two from Paddocks (who were very helpful btw) that were both way too long and one was about 30mm longer than the other. Tried shortening the longer one so it was a snug fit around the screen and it was better (could actually get the screen in the car), but still wouldn’t sit right in the corners. Baines one went straight in and sat right first go.

Not many disadvantes to the mk3 cam, it is just a bit "warmer" but not "hot". It was used on 2.5 engines so will be fine with a 1500 which is broadly similar.
Bearings, if you can find VP2, they would be best. If not, glyco/AE/glacier, then county. Pistons, I believe county are fine. Got some here for a TR7, the company who did the rebore were happy with them, all measured identical diameter, and very close on weight, well within limits.

Another blow over with primer this morning !
Sadly it was 30 degrees outside today and needed to work in the sun.. to hot !
Otherwise I had fixed the dents in the bonnet and given the top panel some primer to.
Rest of the week its going to be rainy, that stops play.
    Slowly getting there !

    Left bonnet panel..
I better replaced this to .. but will try and get it right.

It had a massive dent above the catch, when closing the catch.. it got bigger.

Got the dent mostly out by shrinking the metal.
Hot air gun, hammer and cold water did the trick.
But its still not 100 %.

When I had done one side and cleaning my gun.. the compressor failed.
    The pressure regulator went bad.
So got that fixed sunday morning and we where back

Last 2 days I have been doing some more bodywork.
Rear wings and rear deck had a few little marks and dents.
    So sorted that out now.
Also while I was at it.. sanded off the sills and bye green zink phosphate !

I thought all Spitfires had central locking....you just lean over from the driver's seat to lock the passenger door... I'll get me coat on my way out!!!

Brilliant work, those upper door seal clips are rather fun, are they not ?  The pin that holds the winder handle is also a real laugh to put back in.  Notice you have a central locking system
