    Courier

Hello all, I have just been reading "The Courier" I can't believe I got a mention! How chuffed am I. It really makes me feel part of a very special club. Thank you. Tanky.
  2. Hi all, I'm about to strip the Spit as i am not happy with the paint. So i intend to start with the hood, interior next, then the chrome and stuff...I'm going to get the engine and gear box out too.. So I'd like your thoughts on where I should start with the paint. I've just bought an orbital and palm sander what grit should I start on and end up on? I'd love the benefit of someone else's experience before I start.....Slightly panicking! Charlie

    Car purchase prices

Hi, I paid £3700 for this a couple of months ago. It looks great in the photo, but up close it's not perfect. It has a few issues as posted on this forum but it did have a lot of work done to it by the PO including a new hood and interior. I love my 'Nry and I am just about to start a complete strip down and respray, including a new biscuit interior.... It's the old saying, "it's only worth what you are prepared to pay for it". For me, this was worth the money as I wanted to have something with a good solid base to start from so I could work on it over the winter to get it to how I want it. i would say if you're unsure and it doesn't melt your heart on first glance, walk away. There will be "The One" with your name on it..... Charlie
  4. Hi Rodger, after years of boat ownership, if you are going down the varnish route, as said sand down the whole dash and before you apply your first coat of varnish dilute it with a suitable thinner to 50/50 then apply a thin coat this way the varnish gets right into the grain and let it fully dry. Give it a light sand with steel wool and keep applying and light sanding between coats, reducing the thinner each time until your last coat is varnish with no added thinner. It depends on how much you want your dash to 'pop' on how many coats you apply. I hope this helps.....
  5. Hmmm. Interesting Mr Bond....
  6. Hi all. Please see below...I'm new to this but I'm sure this isn't right....it's the same both sides.... Thanks Charlie
  7. Thanks guys. I'm putting "eNRY" away for the winter this weekend and I have a big jobs list (below) from my trip to Duxford... I am sure there will be more questions from me, so please bear with me........ Thanks again Charlie

    Here Goes!

Good morning everyone. Thank you for your replies and expertise. So, to surmise.... 1) Check Timing 2) Check plugs for soot. I (bought some from the shop whilst at Duxford) 3) Carb vales may be stuck/open/jammed. How will I tell, or is that a stupid question?! 4) Debris in the fuel filter. (I bought one from the shop whilst at Duxford) 5) Overheating coil. How can I tell if it's overheating? Should I just buy a new one? Anything else? Thanks lovely people.. Charlie

    Here Goes!

Hello all, Firstly can I say how great it was to meet so many great and kind people at Duxford on Sunday. I was my first ever classic car show and what a great time Alli and I had. Bernie and Martin manning the shop certainly enjoyed my visit I think! Everyone we met was so lovely to us newbies and Duxford is certainly in the diary for next year. I won't tell you all my woes, but on the way up to Duxford the Spit started misfiring quite badly. I pulled the leads as I thought that was the problem and with a nail file, my keys and my trusty teeth, I trimmed back all the ends of my leads and re-crimped them. This cured the problem for a while, but it returned. I spent Saturday morning in a taxi visiting all the motor factors in Cheltenham looking for new leads to no avail. So arriving at the show on Sunday I duly bought new leads and rotor arm and fitted them. This seemed to cure the problem for a while but on the way back it started to misfire again, all the way home. It only starts to misfire when it gets up to temperature and it gets worse going up any kind of slope or hill, when it's cold it runs beautifully so I am now starting to think it may be fuel related, could this be true? When I pulled into the services and opened the bonnet, I could see fuel dripping from both overflows from the carbs. So, if you would be so kind, could you start me off please, where to look first and what should I do? I hope this query does't send John's wrath my way again.....:) (he is a terribly nice chap by the way). Thanks in advance...... Charlie
  11. You guessed! 'Nray' short for 'Nrayetta'....
  12. Look out for my little green Spit. If we make it!.....
  13. Hi, yes planned the route to avoid the motorways with night stopovers in Cheltenham and Cambridge, then a morning stroll to Duxford. I'll have to take the motorway home though as work on Monday. Drat!
  14. Hi John, I have no idea what a Crank Damper is! So I will be sure to come and find it. I just hope my wee Spit makes it all the way from Cardiff..... Charlie
  15. Thanks guys. Hopefully see you all in Duxford!
  16. Thing is, it wasn't obvious until my friend pushed hard on the throttle. When it was ticking over the braiding around the hose was soaking it (petrol) up and as it may have been seeping for a while the fuel just made the hose look it was brand new to my untrained eye. If it hadn't have been that obvious, all of the suggestions from members would have and still are very useful. So while it might have been a panic moment for me as a newbie, I have still learned a lot from the suggestions made. I now know what to look for if it isn't a fuel line pouring petrol out all over the place! Charlie
  17. Bit harsh I thought. As I have said, I am a newcomer to classic cars with no mechanical experience. I just wanted to narrow down some things it might be if it wasn't obvious. As it turned out, it was. Should I apologise for seeking help for something so obvious? Tanky
  18. Hi Colin, It's just a standard pump. Does this make a difference? Charlie
  19. Don't worry, I will be checking all before I try to take her all the way to Duxford this weekend.... Cheers Charlie
  20. Hello all, Just thought I would give you an update on the fuel catastrophe. Upon opening the bonnet with a colleague and turning the engine over it became very apparent as to the problem....it was a massive split in the main fuel line to the front carb. Easy even for a blind man to spot as it was spitting out by the bucketful. So quickly changed both main hoses and went to my first South Wales meet. Thank you all for your help. What a team.... Charlie
  21. Hi guys, Thanks for all your help! Problem is, I'm at work so can't get to the Spit right now, might get chance after work, but I don't know what to look for apart from the obvious! remember, I'm a newbie to this sort of stuff. Get a hobby, she said! I'm not too far away from the meet tonight in South Wales so hopefully I can get there and someone will be able to frighten the pants off me again..... Charlie
  22. Good morning Triumphers, So, I brought the spit to work this morning (as I'm attending my first club meet tonight) and when I started it with the choke out, it started fine, warmed it up a little and pushed the choke back in as normal. Thing is, there was this overpowering smell of petrol all the way into work, (about 15 miles). If I didn't have the top down I would have surely passed out! This hasn't happened before, sure, I've had the odd whiff of petrol now and again, but this was something else. Now, should I be worried? By the way, there was a car on fire on the junction of the M4 and the A4232 this morning on my way into work. Yikes!!!! Thanks all....... Charlie
  23. Hi, Thanks. There is nothing but fresh air in the fuse holder under the bonnet. I'll have a dig around at the weekend and see if I can find something that looks like a fuse box.. it could be anywhere and I don't know what I'm looking for! I'll let you know.....
  24. Hi all again. So, got the horn working (wire disconnect) Got the wipers working (stuck switch) they are not brilliant so might invest in new wiper motor. Thing is, and this is the stupid bit, There are no fuses in the fuse box! I know the PO must have done something, but what?
