Spitfire 1500 runs like a bag of nails until it's warm
alan.gilbert_6384 replied to Will Orum's topic in Engine
Hi I had a very similar problem, I found the solution for me was thus. First check that the choke works in the following way, when fully in jets are fully up and that the idle speed is correct when warm. Second check that the first quarter travel of the choke only increases the idle speed. Third, clean the spark plugs thoroughly. Next is the permanent fix, when cold, fully open choke then turn over, as soon as she starts push it back in to the point where it only increases the idle speed. The starting procedure is what was fouling up my plugs I had the coke out far too long this lead to the fouling of the spark plugs which made it run rough and only went away when burt off, and as said on this post it take a long time to get them to run right. -

Hi All, last year I had foreign body in the carburettor fuel float chamber valve making it stay open. This resulted in fuel escaping from the top of the chamber right where the exhaust is (not ideal). I see that later cars had a vented chamber, I presume for this very reason ??? So can mine be converted to vented ? Do I need new chamber lids ? Are the vents just open or is there some sort of vinternal valve ?? And finally has anyone done this before ?? Thanks very much for your help.

Might be a bit late now, but i would also cut a large access panel for the clutch slave cylinder for when it leaks, cheers.

Enhanced rear springs buttons
alan.gilbert_6384 replied to cliff.b's topic in Chassis, Suspension & Steering
This is worth a read, it explains the difference between swing and fixed springs as well. I think Steve has a fixed spring? http://auskellian.com/paul/links_files/performance_enhancements.htm#Achieve_Better_Suspension -
Hi All, So after getting really fed up with trying to find the blooming seat belts every time getting into the car, I decided some improvements and refreshment was in order. New webbings , and new constant force spring later. CAD template. and never having these unobtainiuim items

Hi, I don't believe the trunionless are sided, my issue is the springs, they need to be 8" fitted length minimum (car on the ground). I got this 8" after fitting spacers above the shocks. Rubbing on bulk head is another issue I think. Your gaps should be door to rear wing 5mm, door to bonnet 8mm, door to cill 4 or 5 mm. Hope that helps

Gentlemen, update, great success. So having gone to school and learnt only the metric system, then entering the real work, was taught the imperial system, I am now one of those ambidextrous measurement types that measure things to best fit ie 200mm x 2" I've now fitted the spacers and have got 22" 7/8 (was 22"1/4 and 22"1/8) on both fronts arch to ground (increase of 3/4) with spring length when on the ground between the spring pan on the shock and the tower at 8" on both sides. The rear is 23" both sides (was 22"3/4). I fitted two spacers to the near side, and one to the off side. I checked that the shocks were good and the same on both sides at 3"centre to spring pan, and both 10"free state. It now rides much better as well, also the steering feel is both lighter and better. It's not as high as the Gaydon car, but thankfully that is not what I wanted. The tyre no longer scrap the inner arch , yippee.

Hi All, So done lots of measurements around the car. The front appears to be low and not evern, off side floor to arch is 22' 1/4'' for off side, with near side being 22' 1/8''. The spring length when car is sitting on ground and seated, is 7' 6/10'' for offside, with 7' 3/10'' for near side. The rear appears to be same both sides at 23'. I have removed the ARB and check it using two levels to line up the straight and the other to bribe the fork ends, it appears straight. So here is my plan (constructive comments would be greatly appreciated) I looked at new springs, this is very confusing as most state an installed length of 7'' (I already have that and a touch) and there are lots to choose from if you want to lower the car, not so many for standard ride hight. Normally in automotive design, the rack control arms are meant to set the OB's in their mid position, ie the rack and control arms and IB's are straight and level in both planes when the vehicle is in it normal state (this ensures least wear and positive centring of the steering as you drive). But Spitfires seem very different. The last one, at Gaydon, has a very high front end. So I looked at spring spacers and thought how hard can it be to make my own, now just got to fit them, they are 3/8 thick so I am thinking two on the nearside and one on the off side ? The wife is still looking for her favourite chopping board (you didn't see ANYTHING).

Hi all, I have just changed over to trunnionless, and now have the tyres contacting the inner wheel arch when articulated (the inner lip where the outer and inner structure comes together). I am on 175, 70, 13, these were not a problem before. The spring length at rest with car weight is 7' 1/8'', any ideas ??? Cheers.

Door mirror plinths , metal v plastic
alan.gilbert_6384 replied to alan.gilbert_6384's topic in Bodywork & Fittings
Cheers Pete, I thought the base being plastic with raw plug like legs would detach ? You don't get as many points for an old lady, as a MAMIL -
Hi everyone, Does anyone know where to obtain metal mirror door locators , the wedge bit that mounts on the plight ? They used to be metal in the dark and distance past but are now rubbish plastic things that don't seem to work very well

Stainless steel braided hoses, too short ???
alan.gilbert_6384 replied to alan.gilbert_6384's topic in Braking System
Hi All, quick update, got the front pipes refunded, could not really argue about the rears as they seemed to be the right length, but decided to get a full set (from goodridge) from Chic Doig, and replaced them all. Now I'm happy, the entire braking system is now complete and done properly. Now to change clutch fluid to the left over silicone stuff -

Steering lock to lock spitfire 1500

On modern cars it the IBJ housing that provides the stop, but the spitfire rack seems to travel way too much. -

Hi Pete, thanks, but I was wondering what actually stops the wheels from traveling too far (sorry I probably should of explained it better). -

Its at nominal height, ie as all spitfires with our bum 5 inches off the ground
