clutch master cylinder mystery seal

Brilliant, thanks so much, was worried I missed something as I could not find any info anywhere else. Thanks again. -
Hi All, So i have tried to find this before bothering the great and good on the forum, but have failed miserably. I brought a clutch master cylinder replacement kit (the correct one for 1977 spitfire 1500) and have a mysterious spare seal. When I dismantled it this seal was no where to be seen, although it is detailed in both the WSM and the bible Haynes. Please see pictures, it the one shown as in front of the piston item number 13 from haynes and also shown in WSM picture. I can not find where this little bugger goes, there does not seem to be any registers for it, can any one enlighten me, thanks very much.

Hi All, Thought I would canvas some advise on dynamic advice timing, I am using super unleaded 95 RON, with an unleaded head on a 1500 spitfire. I have noticed pinking under loaded acceleration so reduced from the standard 10º BTD to 8º BTD. I still seem to have some pinking under loaded acceleration, and was wondering what everyone has, and do they also get the pinking ??? Thanks very much.

Clutch slave cylinder new v refurbish seals ???
alan.gilbert_6384 replied to alan.gilbert_6384's topic in Gearbox & Overdrive
Hi All, So after reading Pete Lewis comments above, I thought I would go with cutting the access hatch route, flipping glad I did as in less than 2 months and under 200 miles the new cylinder is now leaking grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I have now brought a seal kit and will inspect the bore, maybe polish it before installing new seals. On this subject does anyone know what the stuff (i presume some sort of grease) is the silver sachet, and is it just for lubricating the pin as it goes through the outer seal ?? -

Sounds like a good plan. The oil is critical to the synchro as the pressure build up in the cone to synchronise the two parts whilst ensuring no direct contact between the SNR brass ring and the cone. You may find the feel will be better with a good quality GL4. -

Hi Josef, which oil did you use for the box ? -
You might want to check the shims in the yoke. The yoke is the bit that takes all the play out of the engagement between pinion and the rack. It has a spring to ensure it always engaged, the shims are to ensure the correct amount of steering feel is obtained. Remove the large nut and one shim, see if the helps ( put it back together before you try it;).

Wow that’s quite a failure, what caused it? It’s not a normal failure the gear box is quite robust if the oil is changed every 20000000 miles or so 🤣 -

I think those holes were original, the triumph logo was never symmetrical to the boot handle, here is a picture from the original sale brochure. The angle is deceptive but I think you can see it. -

Seriouslee I think only the pedantic would even notice that given how beautiful rest of this car is. Don’t get caught up in the perfectionist trap, it’s a wicked spiral. The car looks great. -
Hi Steve, yes I agree with supporting local shops, but for its 15 mile each way trip for me, and as you say at £1,80 a litre its no joke, especially if they don't have what you need, and have to order it in. Sorry to hear about the crank seal, good luck with it. Cheers Alan.

Cheers Steve, just checked it out on this site, definitely 5/8 18. And the price is very good also £6.11 with free delivery https://www.partsinmotion.co.uk/car-parts/filters/oil-filters/napa-oil-filter-nfo3040-detail

I got a renewal for £150 from Lancaster, thought this high so shopped around, got it for £95 with classic line with agreed valuation, result. It pays to shop around every for classics. -
Hi Jonny, thanks very much, the existing filter is just plain white, can’t remember where I got it from now 😩

Hi All, Hope all is well with you lot, just waiting for the weather to improve a bit so thought I would stoke up on some service items. So digging around oil filters and I find two confusing things mentioned, that being the thread size. All the ones I looked at say 5/8 UNF, but some say x16 and some say x18. Obviously this is important, the standard is x18, but why would some filters say x16? Does anyone know what the actual thread pitch is on the 1500 SC engine ? Cheers
