  1. There were 2 x 2600 engines on eBay this morning, one has been bought, I think there is a 2300 on there too. I was reading about SD1's in general and it got me thinking.
  2. Just mulling over period engines that would be good in a Spitfire. Everyone one seems to say GT6, Vitesse 2L, Rover V8 but what about Rover 2600 straight 6 found in the SD1 why is that not a popular conversion?
  3. Found out why the adaptor plate would not seat. the reverse idler spindle was not fully home. Unfortunately with all my messing a couple of needle rollers escaped and the spindle is not running as freely as it should. My assumption is the only way of getting the needle rollers back in is to completely remove all the gubbings from the gearbox to get to the idler gear. If I have to do that I might as well replace all the bearings and refurbed the gearbox.
  4. Struggling fitting the o/d adaptor plate to the single rail gearbox. There is a dowel type rod that sits in the adaptor plate (marked in the picture) but it seems to be hanging on it and stopping the plate going down even after tapping with a rawhide hammer. I have cleaned up the dowel and its nice and smooth, does it require some force to get it to fit. The bolts that connect the adaptor plate to the gearbox will span the gap and I could slowly use the bolts to pull the plate to the gearbox if required but that feels like a last resort.
  5. Ordered the whole lot including the inner steel bowl, lets see if I can make something out of both sets
  6. At that point trying to make everything fit and inline before paint. Its quite satisfying connecting all the bits back together. I also ordered a different headlight bowl set from Paddocks to see if that sorts out the spinning headlight issue.
  7. Still continuing on the fitting P700 lights to a spitfire. I know it can be done as I have seen a spitty with them fitted. I took the units apart to see the nodules people mentions which stops the sealed units spinning under the beauty ring but these units don't have them. They do have 3 clips on the unit which tie with 3 gaps in the adjuster ring but the units are too shallow for the clips to tie into the adjuster ring gaps. I have seen these clips on the back of old brit sealed units when restoring old triumph bikes and they tie into W clips, would W clips work here? Any other advice?
  8. Ill have a gander on the one I haven't fitted
  9. Struggling fitting these light bowls/ lights to the spitfire. When I stick them all together I can't find where the seal shown on the top fits (the bottom fits behind the bowls and the bonnet. Once the beauty ring is fitted doesn't clamp the the lamp and it spins in the bowl. Any ideas anyone? VID_20210424_163524.mp4
  10. Sorry another question when fitting the overdrive adaptor plate to the gearbox should this pin be pointing towards the centre of the gearbox or away from the gearbox (opposite direction).
  11. So this is a strange one, I think I have 2 starter solenoids and I dumbly didnt take a picture of the solenoids when I took them apart. I have the standard Lucas solenoid like so..... but there are some strange wiring going on and not wired like the manual. And I have this..... Which is connected to the starter motor. The one in the first picture is a replacement for the one I got in the car as that was generally falling apart. The previous owner has extended the white with red tracer wire and yellow with white tracer wire down to what I assume is another solenoid. Yellow with white tracer and pink with white tracer is on the positive side of the coil. White with black tracer is on the negative side of the coil. All the big brown wires are on one side of the of the Lucas solenoid withe the battery connection the other side has a thick black wire going down to the other solenoid. There is a white with slate tracer floating round that I dont have an idea what that connects to. Any idea what I need to connect to get this working?
  12. Decided to start to put the overdrive back together for testing, I dug out my build jig for long pointy objects commonly known as a crate and got to cleaning of the gaskets. I got the gearbox and adaptor plates nicely cleaned off and opened the gasket kit to find it didn't include that gasket, doh! Ordered with some other bits I found were missing (nothing serious) and wait, photo is prior to cleaning the gaskets) So I found something else to do. I grabbed the box marked shocks and dug out the doo-hickory I bought off the internet to compress them and got to work. The doo-hickory works well. And the completed shocks look like the new ones in the brochure which is nice. I didnt get chance to fit them so thats for another day. Time to push the car out of the garage and do more bodywork and some electrics......
  13. Little bit of work done on the dash, removing the veneer and making some extra holes. Also the new veneer arrived today
  14. Yes both front and rear bearings have large and small circlips on them
  15. ha ha I need to "doctor" my photos better. BTW thats not permission to have the next page or two with pun orientated humour.
  16. I have diverged from my project build thread as this might get complicated Quite a while ago I "won" an ebay auction for an o/d, gearbox and bell housing for a 1500 spitty, they were in 3 parts and described as bought from a previous owner who stated "it failed in 4th when o/d not engaged". Quizzing the guy who I bought it off and found out thats the only info he received when he bought the bits. I have done a bit of visual inspection and there doesnt seem to be anything obviously wrong. My plan is to connect the 3 bits back together and build a j type o/d test bed as seen on a few youtube vids. The three separate parts seem complete and just need screwing together but how? Looks at a few exploded diagrams but they all are of each separate bit not connected together The first question concerns the location of 2 circlips and spacer washer pictured. Where do they go? Initially I thought the large one went here But there already is a circlip on the bearing that sits in that recess. I have no idea where the spacer washer or the smaller circlip goes by they are of a similar size. The next question is what goes here in the hole? Is it the rod from the selector like so? Third question I assume there is a certain setup in the gearbox you need to select when first setting up the box with the o/d, can someone advise? Any help gratefully received
  17. Strange thing is, I put it there about a year ago for some reason that I can't remember now.
  18. Managed to get a few hours in today. Greased up the wiper motor and fitted. Found the new coil bracket and bolted that in. Searched round for the holes for the starter solenoid fitment and eventually found that I had welded up one of them so drilled out the hole and struggled to fit the solenoid bracket as I was on my own. Next fit missing jubilee clips, brake pipe clips and sort out the wiring.
  19. Fibre glassing the transmission tunnel worked, its now nice and solid, just needs tidying up
