    aha  single line   Hmmmm

another idea would be to recalibrate./check the dipstick when you change the oil next time

fill the specified amount less a 1 litre  , mark stick    as low   add the 1 ltr mark as High

does it tally with what you have ???

wrong dipstick wont be the first time

cant think of anything on the pump pick up that would cause a loss on wash slosh

    Pete

    Yes, that's a good idea 👍

I would get the oil level up to full and try again. If its oil starvation Ive never heard of it outside of racing...

Yes, I've just filled it and will test again tomorrow. I was thinking the oil pickup is towards the rear of the sump and possibly if braking hard, some of the oil isn't. But maybe I'm deluding myself.

being a 1500 spitty the oil pressure warning lamp is siamesed into the brake PDWA valve to test the brake warning light

you may be seeing this lamp flash if the valve is operating due to some imbalance in the two brake hydraulic systems

so it can be more brake related than engine oil pressure

hence you used the brakes quite hard but no drop in the oil gauge  says this is brakes you have a problem with

    Pete

Hmm, that's interesting and would be plausible however, I only have single circuit brakes. Should it be dual circuit on a 78 Spit?

  4. Out for a nice drive this afternoon when I had to brake hard for traffic lights and noticed the oil light came on momentarily. Never noticed this before but don't usually get into a situation where I need to brake hard.

Tried it again on an empty road & same thing happened. Oil pressure gauge never dropped below 10lb but it seems to have a lag in it anyway so it may have been too quick to register.

Checked the oil level and about 3/4 full so wondering if this is not unusual or indicating a possible problem developing?

Excellent! How long did that take?

I'm not sure, maybe a couple of hours but most of that was trying to work out how to do it and deciding I should have done it in a different order.

Now I've made one they would probably only take about 30mins each.

This isn't precision engineering, more rudimentary "fettling" lol

Can recommend replacing the lever, linkages and pins that connect the handbrake cable to the rear wheel cylinders, and welding up any wear caused by the lever on the backplate. I did this just before my Herald’s last MOT; the tester got one side to lock up on the handbrake test and the other wasn’t far off. It’s always been borderline beforehand…

My cable/linkages have all been replaced but the backplates have seen better days. I'm hoping it's just a matter of adjustment but will check for wear in the backplates when I get around to looking at it.

OEM kit on my old Montego.  I found one in a scrapyard and fitted it to my Vitesse (since sold).  Great improvement in touchy/feely but didn't improve handbrake effectiveness.  Would I do it again?  Yes.

    C.

That's a co-incidence, it hasn't improved my handbrake efficiency either lol

The hunt is not over, its got me wondering where i put it now.

Yesterday morning I went into St Ives and being market day, some guy had multiple trestle tables with loads of really useful stuff, all for a £ or so. So £15 lighter & a bag of "stuff" heavier I came home and inspected my haul.

I absolutely know that at some point, all the things I bought will be exactly what I need to sort some problem that crops up.  However, I am less confident that when that day comes I will remember that I bought the stuff or even if I do, where I put it 🙄

Anyway, hope your search succeeds but if not you might find other good stuff you had forgotten about lol

Went out this morning to pick up an ebay gt6 purchase, more elsewhere. Came back and stored all away, sorting out the barn to fit it all in. Hunting high and low i can't find those clips!!!!! Will have another look Wednesday as im out tomorrow.  Is it allways the way when your looking for something.

Yes, too true. Thanks for looking, anyway 👍

If you know the make we can try a search, but I looked for 'wheel embellisher spring clips' just now and found some that may fit - it might be trial and error, there are a lot of variations, but nothing exactly like those so far.

You might be able to make those or have some made?

Thanks for looking. I did search myself but didn't find anything. Not sure how these ones would fit though.

I'm thinking now of trying to make some copies of the originals myself.

  11. I have just bought an old set of chrome wheel trims for my Spitfire which have cleaned up nicely but some of the mounting clips are missing.

Wondering if anyone knows who made or sold these so I can check if replacements can be found.

The trims appear to be much heavier than the ones currently available.IMG_20220211_185018_998.thumb.jpg.5e675de0f3f4113da0ea603a5b7b9e84.jpgIMG_20220211_190113_879.thumb.jpg.5d15034fcd856dd9997259775dd08967.jpg

This is a Spitfire for sale, seems nicely done. I managed to find a couple of photos:

There's a difference in the fitting in those two above; one has two pairs of screws and the other three in a row.

If you search online for 'Triumph Spitfire wooden door cappings' there's a lot of discussion on them in various forums.

Ok, thanks for that. It confirms that they are fitted with visible screws which presumably means holes are drilled in the metal behind.

I have spent many evenings trying to fit the chrome trim. A lot of frustration and cut fingers! But it is so rewarding when fitted and looks so much better with the trim installed.

I used a rotary washing line under the rubber seal lip and a lot of water with washing liquid. Just be patient, luckily I have small hands and I was able to push the rubber inside of the trim where the washing line failed.

I have not used any windscreen sealant, shall I be worried? 😜

I purchased the plastic chrome trim from Rimmers, however it has a small crease (my fault). If anyone would like it I can send some photos, I don’t need it anymore

Thanks for letting me have your spare trim, Joanna. Managed to get it to fit eventually 👍IMG_20220131_154910_306.thumb.jpg.1240fbf4a8367a81557c02685b62b120.jpgIMG_20220131_154929_000.thumb.jpg.5e11a76147fcf9987546ae4899653087.jpg

Took mine out for a leisurely 20 odd mile run around the local area to blow the cobwebs away. Roof down on car, flying jacket collar up for me. Cool weather but oh so nice, last outing this month I think 😉

It's looking nice again tomorrow 👍
