  1. That does look good actually but I guess requires some custom fabrication.
  2. Hi all, My GT6 currently has no bumpers - this is how it was when I bought it. I can't make my mind up if I should buy a set or not. I put my Photoshop skills to good use to mock up what it would look like. What's the verdict?
  3. The source of my blown fuse was the overdrive wiring, but wasn't sure where abouts so i uncovered the gearbox and overdrive to understand how it's all connected. I have a J-Type overdrive and it's wired up in series without a relay. I've read this is ok due to low current draw of the J-Type solenoid. But one more reason to upgrade my fusebox. I think i've narrowed the problem down to the column switch. I decided i would disconnected the switched live from the column switch and see if the fuse still blew. As soon as i flicked the switch it blew, so now to try and figure out how to fix/replace it. 20220816_202249.mp4
  4. @Pete Lewis sounds like a good idea. In that case my next project might be what you're suggesting @dougbgt6 @Stratton Jimmer thanks! I love the looks of these cars, it's amazing to have one after wanting one for years. Also, thanks for checking your fuses, for the time being hopefully i'll be alright with Halfords 35A glass fuses in that case
  5. Nice car! Personally i'm a fan of the black plates...
  6. So good news and bad news. First the good news, shes lives! Got the exhaust on after some manipulation and put everything back together including the freshly cleaned and reassembled carbs. It runs well and starts up straight away, previously it took a while to fire up, so that must be good news. I would like to get a professional to take a look though as i'm not 100% confident in my carb setup. I got them balanced as best i could using a flow meter. I also played around with the idle mixture screws until it idled nicely, but i did notice a bit of black smoke on a couple of occassions, i think it happened when i blipped the throttle. I think i'll also get a pro to check the timing. Now for the bad news, took it out for a drive on this beautiful evening, met my friend at the pub and took him out in it... and of course it was at this point i had my first break down - in the worst place as well - on an uphill bend on a national speed limit fast country road. First priority was to move to safety, my friend stood on the corner and warned traffic of my presence, 3 very kind people stopped to help push me to a safe place. I wish i could get all their numbers to buy them beer. Turns out i simply blew a fuse, but what caused it to blow i don't know. Seemed to happen on hard acceleration up the hill. It was the top of the 3 fuses (17A continuous / 35A blow) which services the fuel pump (hence breakdown, i ran out of fuel) and a few other things that i'm yet to determine. I think finding the cause of the blow is going to be a pain. Anyway thats the latest update from me!
  7. Back again after another busy few weeks, was away from home visiting the missus' family in Bulgaria. I'm having a nightmare with this blooming exhaust manifold. Whilst i was away i got a local metal worker to open up the exhaust ports on the new one. At the same time i asked him if he could try and weld up the crack in the old one so i have options. I spent tuesday evening wrapping the new manifold in DEI exhaust wrap. Didn't do the best job but it'll do. Then i went to fit the new exhaust and put everything back together, and discovered that my intake runners clash with the flange on the new exhaust and i dont have a dremmel or the appropriate tools to modify it. No bother, i'll just fit the old repaired manifold back on instead, it looks a better design anyway. So i cleaned up the whole thing with a wire brush and painted it a nice silver with high temp paint, got it looking good. Went to fit it and it no longer fits. Where it has been welded, the pipes have pulled together a few milimeters and no longer fit on the studs. What a waste of time. If anyone has any suggestions im all ears.
  8. Hi all, another update after a busy month. @Pete Lewis yes, it looks like it has had the external rocker feed done. See pics below. My exhaust finally arrived from rimmers and I also completely disassembled and cleaned the carbs using an ultrasonic cleaner. I bought some weber service kits and refreshed all gaskets and seals. The exhaust port openings on the new manifold are much smaller than my current one; 25x32mm vs 30x36mm on the old one. I hope this doesn't affect performance.
  9. I'm back with more updates. Still waiting for the exhuast from rimmers. In the meantime i did a couple of things; fitted T-Piece Fuel Unions for the Webers, did a Compression Test, Inspected cylinders with a borescope. I did the compression test cold since i've removed the exhaust and intake. Based on my rough interpretation of the gauge the results were: 1. 185 2. 180 3. 179 (169 first try) 4. 180 5. 180 6. 171 (174 first try) It was bit low in 3 and 6, so i re-tested them. The results seem acceptable to me. Regarding the borescope inspection, I know there's supposed to be honing marks in the cylinders, but the scoring looks pretty deep, what do you guys think? 2022_05_17_18_55_29.mp4
  10. JohnD/NonMember, very interesting reading thanks! I'll stick with what i've ordered. So project today was painting the intake manifold and I also wanted to test the fuel pump (Facet Universal Pump), it took 38 seconds to fill 100ml of fuel, and it wasn't a consistent flow. I think it might be down to the position of the pump, it is quite high up, in line with the top of the fuel tank. I think i should relocate the pump. This test was just running from battery power.
  11. I have a question for you knowledgable people, what are the benefits of the 6-3-1 vs the 6-2-1? I've ordered the Phoenix 6-3-1 from Rimmers, but i'm questioning that decision now. The 6-2-1 from the Club Shop is considerably cheaper, looks simpler/potentially easier to install and less points of potential failure. In my mind 6-2-1 seems like it would better for performance as well but i must be wrong otherwise why would they sell the 6-3-1. Would love to hear your thoughts!
  12. Thanks for the responses all, I think i'm going to bite the bullet and get the RG1304DELUXE 6-3-1 manifold as suggested by people above. That's with the twin tipped sports rear silencer. I'll order it, but have no idea when it might arrive its been on back order since January. Along with the DEI Heat Wrap, thats a comfortably over £1k... ouch. https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID008015 I prefer the look of the twin tips, rather than the large bore exhaust, plus if the large bore is as loud as my current system, i would need to fit a bolt on muffler to be allowed on Goodwood Circuit. The source of my exhaust leak was at the 3 into 1 join as can be seen in the pics. The new system seems like it will be more durable in that area since there's no join there. I just pray that it will fit, since my car is a 2.5l hence the block is a bit longer i believe and space is very tight between the block and chassis frame. Those little wing nut bolts under the manifold as an absolute PITA to get to, i don't know how i'm going to get them tight when i put the new exhaust on. Anything i should do while I have the intake & exhaust manifold off? I plan to give everything a bit of a clean, plus i'm going to paint the intake runners.
  13. Hi all. Firstly, I need to apologise for disappearing off the face of the earth. It's been 9 months since I last posted, where that time has gone I don't know. Time to give you an update on my car! I took your advice and just drove the thing and enjoyed it. I got some good use out of it last year over the summer. I'll post some pics and vids below! I think the mayo was down to condensation as many of you suggested as it disappeared after some good drives. In October I had a small issue, one of the core plugs corroded through and was leaking coolant (see pic). That was a nice and easy fix thankfully! Pulling out the old plug and putting a new one in was much easier that I was expecting. I then flushed the coolant and replaced. My latest issue is a blowing exhaust so I will try and fix replace that soon as I'd like to get the car out again now spring has sprung! GT6.mp4
  14. Thanks all for the advice & the pics, I will try all of the above and keep you updated
  15. So I opened up the catch can and it's full of mayo, a bit concerning. It doesn't have anything inside, literally just a can. This looks like more than just condensation. What do you think? In any case i need to do a compression test as that may determine whether an engine rebuild is on the cards anyway. Also want get that oil thermostat fitted.
  16. Haha i am prepared to sacrifice a couple of fingers in exchange for a cool breeze. I guess the spitfire and GT6 regulators are the same?
  17. I've ordered the Thermostat you recommended, look forward to getting that in there. The idea behind measuring the pressure was to compare catch can setups, do a before and after with current setup vs an improved setup. That would mean i couldn't use the rocker box outlet, so i was thinking of sacrificing the oil cap. Just thought it might be an interesting experiment.
  18. There's nothing wrong with it, i was just thinking of doing an experiment and sacrificing it by putting a pipe fitting through it so i can measure pressure using an old turbo boost gauge
  19. My GT6 (Mk II) has fixed plastic side windows. I would love functioning windows again! As in the title, I need all components related to lifting door glass. Many thanks, Adam
  20. In fact you can see the spring that was holding down the dipstick in the last picture I posted
  21. Wow, thanks all for your replies, i'll try to respond to some of your comments: Clive - You're right I don't have an oil thermostat, can you recommend one? Also, you're catch can setup sounds like the one in Ian's picture, I think I'm going to try to replicate that setup. I might do a little experiment and measure the pressure in the valve cover before and after, see if it makes a difference. If the valve cover already maxes out at atmospheric pressure I might just leave the current setup, but get rid of that copper pipe (😄) and relocate the catch can somewhere closer, I'm not hugely keen on the idea of running back into the intake for fear of dirty valves. Johny / Dick - I think the first thing on my to do list now is to do a compression test. The previous owner had apparently done one a year or so ago and wrote down the readings, they were all pretty close around 125-130psi which I think is OK?. However, something I just realised is that the dipstick was held down with a spring, I guess it had been popping out, i.e. there is pressure in the crank case, this is a bit concerning and i want to check compression before doing anything else. Dick, I may take you up on that offer of the compression tester! (Unlucky on the breakdown by the way!) PeteH - I think the "italian tune" is the second item on my to do list haha Ian Foster - Regarding the white chassis, i'm not sure but I have some pictures of the restoration that was done back in 2006 and i'll have a look and see if there are any clues or whether the guy just liked the idea of a white chassis. Regarding coolant, my overflow bottle is virtually empty <50ml in there, not sure if that's a good or bad thing - the coolant in the radiator is full to near the top. And finally, regarding catch can, i meant to empty it tonight and see how much was in there but I didn't get round to it. Will have a look tomorrow. JohnD - I will look to get an oil anaylsis done after a few miles of usage for sure, good idea! No obvious oil leaks, but i can smell it so i'm sure there is some seepage somewhere, to be expected i guess. Thanks all for your replies that has really helped alleviate my fears regarding head gasket but intensified my fears about poor compression haha 😄 Also, can anyone point me in the direction of where I can buy a replacement oil cap (as shown in picture in the first post), I can't seem to find one with that 'female' design?
  22. I hope you're right! I'm in Chichester, so very much looking forward to getting over to Goodwood as often as i can to chill in the paddock and maybe take her round the track.
  23. Thanks for your quick reply!! Took it for a test drive last Saturday before purchase, let it run for a few minutes before taking it out for maybe 10 mins or so. Not sure how long it had been standing before that. Then just took it out for the first time today for around 30 mins. Last service was recent, the oil on the dipstick looks almost fresh out of the bottle, very clear. The coolant is blue and no signs of oil in it. I'll have a read through the workshop manual, I would like to attempt this job myself if it's required, first time I've done it though.
  24. Hi all! Just bought myself an early 30th Birthday present, a beautiful GT6 MkII (see pics below). I picked it up last Wednesday on my friends trailer. This is my first foray into classic car ownership so I'm going in blind! 2 years or so ago, the engine was swapped for a 2500 'MM' engine with triple webers and the car has been used for track days a few times a year but appears to have been well maintained (Although for this reason It wouldn't surprise me if my suspicions noted in the title of this post are correct). I would also like to take it on track at some point, but will mostly use it for weekend drives and attending car shows & meets. Anyway, today I took the car out for the first time in my ownership for about half an hour. She drove beautifully, except there were a couple of short occasions where there seemed to be excessive smoke out the exhaust and the smell of burning oil, the rest of the time the exhaust looked lovely and clear. I never experienced this on the short pre-purchase test drive. So I left the car to cool down for a couple of hours in my garage and checked the oil level, it had decreased a small but noticeable amount since my pre-drive check. I also looked under the oil cap to find what looks to be the dreaded 'mayo'. I wiped some off before thinking that I should take a photo, so there was more on the cap than what you can see in the photo's. I never saw any mayo when I checked the oil cap pre-purchase, it did look a bit suspiciously too clean though, but the seller was a decent chap and I have no reason to suspect he was hiding anything. So, I would really appreciate your thoughts, do you think my suspicions are correct and I need a new head gasket? Also, my car has a rather 'interesting' looking valve cover breather setup and oil catch can, i plan to remove and inspect this to ensure it's not blocked. As I believe this could put gaskets under excessive pressure, am I right in thinking that? Thanks in advance for your help!!
