  1. Hi, After 20 years of fun, memories and great journeys, the repairs made by the previous owner have caught up over time and are well beyond my capabilities and budget. It will need an experienced brave new owner to replace the sills, floor pans, inner wings and associated panels. So I need to offer my car has not road worthy, a project or most likely a breaker. I'm based in Oxfordshire, the interior is already stripped out (photographed and fully itemised), obviously transport will be required. More details below, have two questions please: Any interest/ What do you think she is worth in this state? Many thanks, Mike (07831 171080). Covered a total of 25,000 miles in 20 years. Fully serviced each year. Runs great, all gears engage well, overdrive fully functional. Whine from diff at speeds over indicated 70mph, which has never got worse during ownership. Kept in a carport. Used on dry days only. · Engine has unleaded head, spin on oil filter, oil cooler, alloy rocker cover, silicon hoses. Small oil leaks from the usual places. No oil top ups required during the year (1,000 miles covered on average) · New windscreen and stainless steel trim (with 2 small minor chips) · Hi-torque starter motor · New rear bumper · Aldon electronic ignition, sports coil & HT leads · Monroe shocks, lowered sports front springs, poly wishbone & antiroll bar bushes · Full width 3 core radiator fitted last year with Pacet electric fan & thermostat · Stainless steel free flow manifold, sports exhaust, and brakes hoses front & back · The SU carbs, which were reconditioned when I purchased, have yellow springs, K&N filters, stub stacks, AAQ needles, and are correctly tuned · Other upgrades include Halogen headlights, Minilite Alloys (never kerbed, almost like new), and EBC green stuff front pads
  2. Hi, My Spitfire 1500 will need new sills and floor panels in the near future, hoping to get a better door alignment as part of the work. I've never welded and don't have the space or experience to attempt the work myself. I do appreciate this will take many many hours to do. Can anyone recommend a garage in the Oxfordshire/Bucks/Herts area I could have a long & interesting chat with! I live 8 miles south of Oxford. Many thanks, Mike.
  3. Fitment was straightforward, especially as I practiced without the spacer first time! When my third starter motor in 10 years, just 20,000 miles, started to give problems I thought it was time to fit a product that would last a few years. I put a bigger battery in 5 years and have never had problems actually starting since, just the issues with starters not disengaging quickly despite taking out cleaning and dusting with graphite powder. I know some folks like to keep the cars original, but I tend to upgrade if I can for reliability and safety factors each time a component fails. Mike.
  4. Firstly, thanks so much for the really quick replies and advice. Re-fitted the new starter last night with the spacer and fired up as expected. Actually weird to hear a modern starter and then a classic motor! Wanted one of these for years and when my third recon starter failed after 3 years moderate use it was time to invest. Thanks again, Mike.
  5. Hello, Purchased a PowerLite Hi Torque Starter Motor from Rimmers. They shipped the RAC401, PowerLite list the RAC414 for the Spitfire. eBay sellers also list the RAC414. Our Club Shop lists the RAC401. Rimmers inform me they've been shipping the RAC401 for Spitfires since 2010 with no problems. Stating that the RAC414 is for the Dolomite/TR7. Asked if I should retain the spacer between the motor and the engine, Rimmers thought not. The Moss parts book also advises removing the spacer. Just tried it and the starter doesn't disengage when the motor starts My obvious next step is to fit the new starter with the spacer, but first wanted to check if anyone else had a similar experience and can confirm the RAC401 is the right motor and I do need the spacer? Thanks, Mike.
