the other clues   i think  ??  all dolly  were a 20 rolled spline input shaft   the VIT/ GT6 vintage would be a 10 cut spline input shaft

    Not all Pete.

Dolomite ( as in original from early 70's before they put engine sizes on the badge) were 10-spline.

  2. Spitfire went to J-type with very last Mk4, I have a Couple of them.

TR6 went J-type with the CR cars, so 73. Same with Big Saloons, about 73 I think.

My 2 1850 3-rails boxes are WE ones, well one was, it has recently been rebuilt into a spare casing, so is now in a GR overstamped one,  which show signs of being a WE before interestingly.

Hi, Ive come across these gearboxes and its been discussed previously what theyre from with no conclusive answer. My personal suspicion is that theyre from a Dolomite 1850 being one of 3 types used in them which all had the same ratios as GT6/Vitesse 2L. When opened Ive found:

Be careful, Dolomite 1850 3-rail uses same gearset as Mk3 GT6, which is NOT the same as Mk 1/2 Vitesse and GT6.

Wish mine were in that condition, I've just started refurbishing a pair... whilst looking for other parts I found stainless pistons, seal kits and even the little round seal for the two caliper halves in a drawer, so as I am doing nothing else at present, I may as well. I think I'll have fun getting the pistons out of the other one...

I have a second pair with moving pistons, and a third pair that look about the same as your other one, but one f the pistons did move under air pressure amazingly.

An engine stand would have been handy, but I’ve had 4 ( or more?) engines out and never used one. A black & Decker workmate was what I used.

    Doug

Did my first few on a work mate, but I can't lift a 4-pot on my own anymore, let alone a 6-pot to turn into over and round to work on it.

I always wondered if removing one of the pipes off the top and swishing a quantity of Jenolite round the inside would do any good?

Not sure if I fancy picking my compressor up and swilling Jenilite round inside it, it weighs 350kg.

  7. If you get desperate I have a couple of pairs of type 12 out in the garage.

No idea what condition but I thunk 1 set was last on the road in mid70s as they came off a Herald I rescued from a garage that had had a heavy front end crash, twice. Don't think the type 12 s matched the tuned engine the guy had fitted.

Afraid nothing specific, but these cars are entirely capable to long fast trips, and cope with poor roads OK. A spitfire is about the least suitable triumph, but we cope fine.

A Spitfire is more suitable than a TR6, you can get more luggage in the Spitfire.

I ha ve heard stories of very bumpy roads South of the border in Ireland, if true I would be concerned for my low slung exhaust on the TR.

Perhaps Colin can confirm the state of roads over the Irish Sea.

    Would have liked that.

But cant get one thanks to brexit.

Income tax is more then the parts.

    And time..

I guess they were more concerned about fish than Triumph spares when they negotiated the deal.

I am surprised no European supplier does them though.

Hopefully you can quickly engineer the modification for the void, should stop the gasket failing again.
