  1. Thanks Johny. I think I understand. Idling/slow moving traffic for long periods, on very hot days and the stat will be constantly, fully open anyway, regardless of its spec?
  2. Thanks chaps. So I was correct in assuming that the lower the temp the stat opens, the cooler the engine will run. Was wondering if its worth it, to check mine is the lower one, as do get fuel vapour problems if stuck in traffic, on very hot days in Vitesse. Would this make a difference?
  3. Hi Pete. Something basic, that I'm not getting. If an engine is running hotter, then I would have assumed that the stat opens at the lower (82C temp)?
  4. Thanks johny, Pete and Doug. Yes Pete, probably over worrying. Car running really well and have not touched/messed with carbs for ages. But, I had to mess! and took plug out to have a look at colour. 1,3,4,6, pretty normal. No 2 very sooty, no 5 white. this was after about the last 4 miles of slow traffic/idling, after a good M way run. Got a few ideas to investigate first, though was idly wondering about float height (though that would affect all the cylinder's fed from that particular carb anyway, I assume)? Would be very happy to hear that I'm probably worrying about nothing. PLEASE!

  6. Hi. Vitesse. With car at rest and steering under load, is a few mm of rack movement normal when steering wheel is rocked side to side? As seen at the bushes to chassis fastening area Ta
  7. Out of interest, I can't see how, but does float height go out of adjustment in normal use?

  9. Not doubting you Pete, though was that in 38c, which is when my car does stumble if in traffic jams for a while, idling and very slow moving. I don't think the car is running much too rich, going by plug colour and 40mpg (motorway at 60mph, 3.27 diff and overdrive), though I'm not an expert on these things
  10. Its funny with mods. I'm very fond of my Vitesse, particularity, as pretty original and chuffed it still has the original factory fitted engine. Though on U tube, a 63 Yank Ford Fairlane, that looked great (IMO), with original faded paint and small dings and original interior, was modded with an uprated engine, GB box and suspension etc. I thought this was a brill combination. ?

  13. I first noticed about 5 years ago, though it doesn't do it all the time (why I thought, maybe not oil?). Yes, I have noticed no2 and no5 cylinders tend to run richer, currently no2 is running quite a bit richer than 1 and 3. Have nipped up any looser manifold bolts, though not made a difference. No other ideas, though I don't cane the car, so maybe nothing to be concerned about? Mixture has always appeared to be at times inconsistent, going by the colour of plugs, though not way off (aside from its been more so, as in previous sentence), so don't worry too much?

  15. Thanks John. Sometimes no 2 and occasional no5 plug look oily. I think this may be fuel on sooty plugs after switching engine off, after slow moving city driving, as also possibly plug smells of fuel a bit?. Also car will also fire very briefly on first turn of starter without choke, even in freezing conditions, so I assume some fuel in cylinder/cylinders?

  17. Thanks folks. All good now One thing. After fitting the new pipe work, though not connected to carbs yet as I wanted to run some fuel through to clear any debris that may be in the new pipes. I turned on the fuel tap in the boot, that I had previously fitted. In the past, I have had to crank, or operate pump manually to get fuel through as I remember?. Straightaway, fuel started to flow out of carb ends of pipe. This has never happened before as I remember?. Is this ok Ta
  18. Not the case here, though inlet manifold could have leaks?, affecting individual cylinders?
  19. HI. Have fitted new pipe and T piece. Not started car yet to check for leaks. One thing. I removed the bolt (mentioned previously) which holds the pump housing and petrol pipe P clip. The bolt was wet with coolent and the hole weeping slightly. I wasn't expecting this, is it a problem? Thanks, Dave

  21. Thanks Colin. Intending to buy from Paddocks. So, Mines a Mk1 2Litre Vitesse, that has 1/4" pipe throughout (I understand the Mk2 has 5/16" from pump to carbs?). Going by their website, I can buy 1/4" pipe and also the T piece section that goes to the carbs, though this appears a generic part. if this is the 5/16" size, do you think I can get my existing 1/4" hose on with a bit of persuasion?
