    Fuel spill

As already said mixture adjustment has no effect on fuel in the reservoir. The pump sends the fuel and the needle valve and the float regulate the level of fuel in the reservoir. If it's only happening on one carb I would suspect the valve and/or float. The float could be stuck down leaving the valve open. OR the valve is stuck open. Is the float moving freely? Is it on the right way up? This can happen very easily during re-build and not be noticed. I only discovered recently floats are solid, I had previously though they were hollow and could be punctured. I'm still not sure there aren't some hollow ones about, a puncture would of course stop the thing working. The valve could be stuck open with debris. OR it's just no longer any good at it's job. This last happened to me a long while back, I changed them both - not expensive. Doug
  3. My GT6 tyres are coming up 7 years old, the spare is unworn, never seen the light of day. I read UV light helps them go off so how much longer will my spare be OK? Doug
  4. John, Mr Crawley profile says he runs Longstone tyres and has a "deep association" with Triumphs. Doug

I have top adjusters, but when Stromberg moved them to the top they stopped the hole in the bottom with a blank plug. However the plugs have the same "O" rings as the bottom adjusters. I know this because one of mine developed a drip leak last summer. Doug
  7. Andy, It's not Doug's rule of 9, it's Pete's, he taught me. I claim the rule of 13 for 6 cylinder engines! Doug
  8. Andy, To adjust the tappets use the rule of 9. With the hand brake off, the engine in high gear AND battery disconnected, rock the car back and forth. Turn the engine till No.1 is fully down and adjust No.8 (1+8 =9) Similarly No.2 fully down adjust No.7 (2+7 =9) No.3 down adjust No. 6 (3+6 =9) And so on. Doug
  9. Engine bay smells can also sneak in through the heater air intake. Only a matter of checking the rubber seal on Vitesse/Herald but on a GT6 the bonnet bulge doesn't make contact with the seal and additional sealing is required. My CO2 monitor has a 10 year life span and cost £15, the manual says test it once a week. John's cheap and cheerful lasts 1 year and you can't test it. I've encountered the cheap ones before I discourage anyone from relying on them. Dou
  10. Yes, the Club shop sealing kit is a waste of money. Draught excluder tape is just as good and why carry on with those strange washers? John is also correct. I used draught excluder and SilentCoat to line the inside of the tunnel and cover the holes in the bulkhead. I have it on the floor as well, but be warned it's surprisingly heavy and will take 10mph off your top speed However you will be cool and quite. I never had a problem shaping the SilentCoat with my hands, but it was a hot summer when I did it. Doug
  11. Yup, that's my method to, no assistance required. A jam jar, a long pipe and a spanner. Doug

Ha! On the GT6 there is one rubber joint in the rear wheel arch and one as the pipe turns into the engine bay. I have rubber pipe all the way to the metal splitter. So that's 4 rubber to metal joints before the filter, 2 between filter and splitter and 2 between each end of the splitter and carbs. So that's 4 +2+4. 4 before and 6 after. There's no escape, they're EVERYWHERE! Doug

    Fuel spill

Ugh! That's manky! But, not unusual Is it a problem? Well it depends on how long since it's last clean. I have the same type and I clean it under the cold water tap at full bore. I'd clean it, dry it, put it back and check regularly. I seem to clean mine once a year, but it's not as yukky as that. I hope the orange I can see isn't rust. If it is it's likely come from the tank. Some of the other stuff looks like the dread rubber slivers, if these get through to your needle valves you may get flooding if they stick 'em open, or starvation if they block them. And rarely do I see filters 100% full, mine runs a 1/3 full. Doug
  14. Steve, Replacing the brushes is cheap and easy, you'll know when you take 'em out if they're worn. Check voltage at battery. You may have a diode problem, also a fairly easy fix. Doug

  17. Just talking about the sound of the engine on another thread. A throbbing Triumph 2 litre straight 6 vs an electric whizzy whirrer. Let me think? Doug
  18. Graham, Lovely car! I've also had some good Fords, Cortina, "Box" Granada and now a Fiesta auto, goes like a rocket, 1 litre of 3 cylinder throbbing power! Doug
  19. Dave, DON'T DO IT!!!!!! If it ain't broke don't fix it. Pete, I think you mean Chic Doig, unless you're getting overly friendly Doug
  20. Aidan, Have you considered storing it vertically? It stands quite stably on end, mine stood like that while I rebuilt the engine, long ago. Doug
  21. I think the sealant holds it in place while you get in on, particularly fiddly on a 6 cylinder longer block. Doug
  22. Martin, The compensators are tricky things and can easily be repaired to destruction. if you're interested in how to set them up it's detailed here. Have a look and then do what Pete suggests! Carburetors — Buckeye Triumphs Doug
