  1. I'm pretty certain 175's are larger. Made that mistake at an autojumble years ago!
  2. Yes, unfortunately. It's not uncommon. Remember these cast iron bits are getting on for 50 yrs old now, and have probably had some less than sympathetic treatment in the past!
  3. Alan, If you're buying the set in the pic, it looks like it's missing the unc nuts for the extension bars. No big deal I suppose... Gav
  4. Thanks for the pic Ian. I dropped off the manifold with QSE yesterday. I opted for the same finish. Gav
  5. Yes ceramic coating is very expensive. As for DIY paint, I agree VHT paint etc very quickly flakes off, unless the surface is scrupulously clean and even then doesn't seem to last. I'm getting mine Ali coated by a local (to me) firm, after Ian F recommended them on here. I was quoted £48.00 all in. Gav
  6. Hmm. That's interesting. Can you remember roughly how much? I'm retired now. Don't mention fuel bills!
  7. That's just Plus Gas penetrating oil to release rusty nuts! Non-Member makes a good point about sandblasting and micro cracks. I think I'll wire brush it and paint with silver, rather than black, high temp paint?
  8. I've read about cast iron welding - it seems to get mixed reports. I've got a good spare manifold, just need to get it sandblasted and painted first. Any recommendations on a good heat proof spray paint? Has anyone managed to wrap the standard cast manifold with exhaust wrap? Being an akward shape, it doesnt look like it's possible to do a proper job, compared to an extractor manifold. I'm just curious if it's possible, all in an effort to reduce underbonnet heat😕 Gav
  9. Morning all, Recently, on returning from a run, I have noticed my clothes were smelling slightly of petrol fumes. Numerous checks were made for fuel leaks from cars and pipework etc, but I couldn't find any. However, after removing the carbs and heatsheild, this is what I found! Strangely, the engine didn't seem to sound any noisier than normal, maybe it's my hearing! If you have a heatshield fitted, it might be worth a check.
  10. The original ones are all metal construction and pretty strong. I'm not sure they are available now, but I think plastic copies are.
  11. Iain, this is the original millboard fixing fasteners. Agree that as a one piece trim, it's a stupid arrangement! Gav
  12. I see that Superflex also make spring leaf buttons. I like the quality of their other bushes.
  13. I've never found the hazardous waste container ( including old anti freeze) at our local recycling centre.I don't think a lot a council tips take it?😟
  14. Afternoon all, The original cable driven tacho on my Vit has suddenly got unstable - i.e. the needle bounces up and down a lot more than it used to, even at idle speed. I have oiled the drive cable and it all appears free to move/rotate. The needle moves freely with the gauge off the car and returns to zero, if I shake it gently, so at this point I don't want to start dismantling it. My suspicions are that it more likely to be the cable than the gauge. Do they get tired/stretch over time?
  15. Have to say, I agree with Johny and others. I'd check the brushes and slip ring and / or regulator first. That's all that needed replacing on my 17ACR. Save your dosh for the heating bill! Gav
  16. Probably being 40+ yrs old, I don't suppose you can ask Joe Lucas for a refund!😄
  17. Amour All is supposed to help protect rubber components from UV. It certainly helped on my old GTI. I think it's American, guess they would know about strong sun...!
  18. I've got a front pair. They've had the lacquer removed. There's also a small bit of damage ( wood missing) from the rear end of one, but I think it could be repaired.. Gav
  19. I've also used Tudor wheels to refurb a setof 5Js to go on my Vit. They trued up a couple that were bent slightly and then powder coated. Very happy with the results. The boss man - Richard - is a nice bloke and genuine 'classic' enthusiast. Gav
  20. I think it's well known that Vit DHC suffer more from scuttle shake than a Herald DHC. I guess it's because of the heavier lump up front. 😟
  21. Evening all, I'm interested in buying an infra red thermometer, for general use. But a quick Google shows a wide price difference. Is it worth paying £20-£30 plus compared to one priced at £12.00?
  22. Could the Forum administrator add a page to the site to let people/areas list tools for loan? Some of the specific tools are pricey, which might put younger/new members off Triumph ownership?
  23. I seem to recall that Trad White Spirit worked well..
  24. On my Vit (mk2) the front fixing for the rocker cover is an OEM fitted bolt rather than a stud and nut. I'm puzzled why the GT6 pics all have a stud and nyloc nut fitted. I understand that the clearance is tighter on GT6's, with Ali cover, but I still checked the bonnet clearance with a large blob of blutac on top of the Ali rocker cover on initial fit! Gav
  25. You've just reminded me how ugly the Panther Rio was. Rather have a Dolly Sprint any day!😆
