Piglet
Wondering if anyone has bought one of these? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394066915374 Seems very well made and I'd rather fit this and stop any potential over heating problems before they start. johny
yes theres a few good threads on here, I remember one with photos of the problem found trying to get a good alignment between the top hose connections...

My Mk3 has a 1500 engine and gets driven enthusiastically. It has a standard narrow radiator. Make sure it's all clean and save your money. Alex If you're not actually having any then as Rob says save your money. It's funny but my 1200 Heralds all have the wide radiator whilst the larger 1360 engine has the narrow, and runs perfectly well although all have been recored. Keep the system clear and well flushed and it's fine.
Piglet
Going to drain and flush the rad today, add new coolant and see how she behaves! Alex

Piglet
Wasn't planning on it. And to be honest I'm not sure what that entails! Alex
Colin Lindsay
Look under the manifold, to the side of the engine closest to the bulkhead, and you'll see a small brass tap, or maybe even just a brass bolt head. The tap allows the coolant round the block to be drained, so open it (may be rusted solid, a lot of them are) or remove it / the bolt and let the water drain out from behind. After that a few refills and drains or a good washout with a hose will clean a lot of the accumulated blockages from the block as well as the radiator. Might as well do the complete job!! cliff.b
My Spit had a bolt which was very tight but coolant drained freely when I finally removed it. I know they can get blocked with "crud" though.

Pete Lewis
there are a lot of myths about triumph cooling why do you think there will be any supposed overheating problems ????? the std set up works fine if its in a fair condition there are many culprits in mis diagnosing engine heat the rad is generally the least of them all in the past we have had engines changed due to incorrect temperature reading dont jump till you have proven the problem Pete

Yeah the new full width one I bought (from Canley’s no less) has a terribly positioned top hose connection so we’ll see how fitting that goes. My Spitfire came with a badly fitting Herald 1200 rad which started leaking, I also have the original narrow Spitfire rad (painted red…) which I wish I’d had rebuilt rather than buying new now. johny
Chinese aluminium rads are brilliant value and generally work well but yes do need a bit of tweeking. The guy in the thread chopped off the top connection and got it rewelded correctly although I think I would have just cut it shorter and then used a different hose... Piglet
Some of the Chinese ones are great. I have one on a bike of mine. Fits perfectly and works well. Alex

If so Im surprised the connection isnt spot on and would let Canleys know...

I was also surprised, have told them, got a response which boiled down to ‘all our stock is like that’ and I could send it back if I wanted. Even showed it to my local Triumph specialist as I was doubting myself and he immediately said the angle was way out. Haven’t decided what to do about it yet. johny
They must be coming from the same place! The fault with the alloy ones is that the top connection pipe centreline is offset from the the thermostat housing outlet centreline so the connector hose has to dog leg over a short distance to fit.... Josef
Yep, that’s exactly the issue. Not even sure I could get the top hose on at all… But it should be brass so might be carefully bendable. I’m considering just having a go myself and then throwing it at a radiator shop if I break it. The sticker on it says made in Turkey though so maybe there’s a rubbish drawing floating around or something.
