Water pump play

Hello

I have slight and I mean slight play approx a millimetre in my water pump bearing what are your thoughts please

Sounds normal enough, as long as it's not leaking water it will soldier on. Bear in mind modern pumps wear out very quickly and more than a few need replaced quite often, almost like a service item to be replaced every two years or so.

And keep an eye out for a genuine old stock pump. They do turn up!

The bearing is made up from two single row ball races, if the play is radial rock then somethings getting worn

if its front , back float then less of a problem

too much float will start the seal to leak from its drain hole , which is a good indication death is close

any brown stains here is a poor sign.

 

otherwise as said it will soldier on for ages
