Sorry cant help but if youre in a rush this one on eBay should do the job but wait for confirmation from an expert:

TRIUMPH SPITFIRE '62 - '74 Gearbox Tailshaft rear extension | eBay

thank you Johny, looks like it's the same part for spitfire as it is for gt6. the bearing seating in the end of the existing casing is worn away from when the previous bearing failed.

two bearings failed in only few months, and we think this is due to being unable to torque the rear flange correctly

think i would check the propshaft telescope is working and youre not using the prop to tie the engine and diff together

causing excessive loading of the tail bearing

Thanks Pete, will check it too, although the propshaft was professionally rebuilt by HJ Chard in Bristol (brizzle) only last year.

I thought about this a bit and of course the tail roller bearing isnt actually positively located in the gearbox casing so if there is any push/pull from either the prop or expansion of the gearbox mainshaft the bearing should move in the housing. This should minimise any strain on the bearing but it is crucial the washer (part no. 155756 - not longer available) is installed BETWEEN the bearing and mainshaft. If it isnt used in the right place the bearing could be heavily loaded by doing up the flange nut which would lead to it failing very quickly....

Johny this is the sequence of the rear bearing cover installation as we had it, ( from the previous owner) please see attached. The thrust washer was always fitted after the bearing and not before, is this correct?
