daverclasper
Hi everyone Vitesse with J Type Overdrive and shorter prop shaft. There is a grease nipple forward of the prop shaft universal joint. I thought this may be to grease the sliding joint, though when greased the grease appeared to exit through the UJ bearings. Any advice on this much appreciated. Cheers, Dave
Pete Lewis
the nipple on the telescope is just for the splines, cant support how it gets to Journal there may be leakage from the cup in the yoke that seals the end of the slide bore Pete
daverclasper
Thanks Pete Where would old/excess grease normally exit from the sliding joint, do you know please. cheers, Dave
Pete Lewis
The tube end generaly has a screw end cap which contains a cork seal this is normally the only escape route, as said some yokes are bored right through and the hole in the yoke has a welch plug to cap the bore I dont see any way it can get to the spider journals if that helps pete
daverclasper
Thanks Pete I guess a stripdown and regrease would be a good idea. If I leave it and sliding joint gets wear, then it may not just be a case of new SJ/UJ as propshaft may end up out of balance do you think?. Pete Lewis
David a question, youmhave the greaser on the the telscopic slide so thats ok if you are dreaming about greasing the uj journals then have a look some uj cross pins have a grease, or a grub screw you can remove and fit a long nipple to grease them, look in the centre of the cross if you stripmit down just tomsee if it needs lubrication you will probably wreck the old bearing cups which may need a lot of vice gripping to extract the cups if you want to do this get some replacement new ones pete
daverclasper
Hi Pete, sorry about this getting long winded. It's just that when I greased the nipple on the telescopic slide, grease seem to exit from the uj yolk bearing/journals and nowhere else that I could see (so maybe uj now greased anyway?). I was just wondering therefore if the sliding joint was getting enough/any grease and assumed this could be separated/stripped to check without interfering with the uj journals. Apologies if I'm not getting it. Cheers, Dave
