Colin Lindsay Posted December 17, 2015 Report Posted December 17, 2015 There's a very nice 1200 saloon on eBay at present and I've noticed an interesting mod to the air filter box; there appears to be two intake tubes one on each sides. Anyone know the car or the reason for this?
SpitFire6 Posted December 18, 2015 Report Posted December 18, 2015 Hi, It looks like a hot and cold air feed. If it has a thermal controlled flap in the filter box, I guess it would be good for cold running emissions. Maybe a Green party owner? Cheers' Iain.
Pete Lewis Posted December 18, 2015 Report Posted December 18, 2015 how about twin spouts to sit in the middle of a flat head vee with a tiny carburettor ??? the hot air pick up to work would need a thermac valve, inside the canister, and needs piston or lever to close a flap in the cool air intake ,, its all possible but not herald vintage
Colin Lindsay Posted December 18, 2015 Author Report Posted December 18, 2015 Hi, It looks like a hot and cold air feed. Iain. I had considered this; an angled pipe down towards the manifold may help in cold weather, but it would have to be manually set. My first car had this on the air filter. A nice touch, if that's what it is.
Pete Lewis Posted December 18, 2015 Report Posted December 18, 2015 we would still need to close of the cold air so the hot pick up would take over, i visualise lots or wire and string to get the controls in the dash !!! and some one needs to knock up a collector to fit the manifold Hmmmm !!!! best to sit in the warm with a cuppa
Unkel Kunkel Posted December 19, 2015 Report Posted December 19, 2015 Can't recall what a Herald's cleaner normally looks like. This one reminds me of the sort of air cleaner used to see on quite a few sixties cars ? Mk 1 Cortina ,?Hillman's etc It looks like someone has added a short pipe and extended the original inlet pipe (why?) -I seem to remember that the advice on some cars like the old 105e ford was to simply turn the air cleaner around so the inlet pipe faced rewards in winter to get warmer air from exhaust manifold. By the way, what's that silver vertical cylindrical" thingy" in the angle between the engine side valance and the rad? Looks a bit like old Pyrene fire extinguisher or is it something else? ( If extinguisher perhaps not the easiest to reach if engine/carb fire) or is it a bespoke rad overflow bottle or ...
Colin Lindsay Posted December 19, 2015 Author Report Posted December 19, 2015 It's a Pyrene extinguisher. (for extinguishing Pyrenes?)
Pete Lewis Posted December 19, 2015 Report Posted December 19, 2015 Never mind the fire look at the bonnet balance spring seems attached to the rad support on a short bkt. as kid we used a old pyrene pump action extinguisher as a water pistol to fight of rebel soap box racers Happy days pete
