Check those fuel hoses

Recommended Posts

I have just finished changing out my flexible hose elements. I was a bit shocked by the condition, with cracking most noticeable on the outside of bends. There hadn't actually been any obvious leaks and interestingly there is no evidence of cracking internally, but I am sure it would have only been a matter of time.

The old hose is marked W=SAE J30 R9 FUEL INJECTION 7.6mm and was changed in 2016 just prior to the CT RBRR. (sourced from a reputable supplier IRRC). Fuel has almost exclusively been 97-99 octane <5% ethanol.

I have replaced it with Cohline-2240, which interestingly has Kevlar reinforcement. Gates Barricade as sold by the club shop would be suitable alternative.

Beware and check those hoses!

pleased the inner bore seemed sound but this is just more of the fake hose thats been sold and caused much grief  especially them darn  rubber slivers

interestingly the painted specification has out lasted the rubber,  Im   no expert but that looks like ozone cracking  of the outer sheath

Thanks for the comments. Seems like everything wants to eat rubber.

Agreed.

I have been even more careful what I selected this time.

I have just replaced the hoses on Bertie the Bond (GT4S 1300) with Gates Barricade, so E10 shouldn't be a problem.

Tucked away in a dark corner of the boot (partly under the floor) was a piece of ¼" bore hose, push-fitted (no Jubilee clips!) onto the steel fuel line and the tank outlet. Not only that, but it wasn't reinforced -possibly not fuel hose at all? Photo shows it compared to Barricade.

So, yes, check those hoses!

Replaced all of mine on the Vitesse a few weeks ago with Gates from the Club Shop,( I need more for my Herald).

I had an old braided section from the pressure regulator to the carbs, it was very soft and drawing in air as it took ages to start after a short layup.

Anyone know a reliable source now?.

lots of cranking after a shortish lay up will be needed to refill the float chambers

they are open vented and the fuel just evaporates  so the level drops quite quickly

as a daily driver you never found out but leave it a month and half the fuel has disappeared through natural venting.

if you have hand prime lever give it some work before starting , if electric  it does it for you,

no primer  ...lots of cranking  over  is inevitable .

any hose sucking air wont help especially the short one on top of herald/vitesse tanks

never use the fake hose often sold on the bay or blister packed at unreputable factors ...its junk

Gates Barricade or Cohline    stick to the best branded hoses

long cranking can also be down to the choke not enrichening enough for a cold start

easy to check on full choke you actually get full needle drop on the SUs or on   CD Stroms  the thames barrier is fully closing the throat and on CDS the choke disc holes are not clogger with corrosion

small  things that have a big effect

worth a look
