altom2_949
The Haynes manual for the Spitfire (chapter 11 item 9 in respect of the front suspension) notes "if the stub axle must be separated from the carrier, a press will be required" and then "refitting is a reversal of removal". Does this mean that the stub axle has to be pressed into the stub axle carrier or will the tightening of the nut be adequate. I shall be using a new stub axle carrier (yes, it did break) and a new stub axle (no, it won't press out).
Clive
I have only ever bolted them up. Usual rules apply (good and clean etc)
68vitesse
Had a vertical link break on my Vitesse, removed stub axel by the use of two big hammers, DO NOT hit the end of the stub axel where the nut is. Slacken nut but leave on loose laid link sidewise on sledge hammer and holding the stub axel hit the side of the link where the axel passes through with my next biggest hammer. You are trying to shock it free like a ball joint, then as Clive said make sure stub axel and hole in new vertical link are clean and tighten to specified torque. Mine broke near home it was interesting reversing home with the help of a neighbour on three wheels and a trolley jack. Regards Paul
Pete Lewis
As its a taper it wont be pressed in , its the grip it gets over time that makes removal a challenge check the nut on the new one after a few miles ..... a loose one makes some interesting noises pete
altom2_949
Thank you for your help and advice. When the stub axle carrier broke, the clever AA chap jacked the bottom wishbone up, "fitted" the carrier back together and then strapped the two wishbones together with ratchet straps. This allowed me to creep the short distance home.
