A rumble in my vitesse

Good morning,

I'm a newbie to the club and Forum having just acquired my first Classic car, a 1967 2ltr vitesse.

I wondered if anyone had thoughts about what could be causing a particular rumble/vibration which occurs most noticeably just under 60mph when there is no load. With foot on accelerator and engine slightly pulling it's fine, if I take my foot off accelerator it's fine, it happens at that point where it is neither pulling or slowing down. Could this be the couplings in the prop shaft?

 

Has any one had this and found the cause? I do have a gearbox and overdrive oil leak problem that I need to sort, presumably oil seals which may be caused by this vibration over time.

Hi Mick and Pete,

So, took it for a drive this afternoon and and paid more attention to what is going on. I think the vibration is probably there at any speed, it just becomes more noticeable at speeds above 50mph. As before, no vibration if I take foot off accelerator, or if I keep some "Drive" on the engine, either in 4th or with overdrive. I took it out of gear and no vibration. Only time it does this is with "no load" (i.e. not slowing down and not pulling at all). I'm starting to think it may be engine related rather than any drive problem. When I got home I was sitting with engine ticking over. It's a really quiet smooth engine, no knocks or taps when pulling away or changing gear, but, I found as I increased revs on the drive there was noticeable vibration, getting worse with engine speed. So possibly Main Bearings? I noticed that the oil pressure had dropped considerably just ticking over as well.

Do you think this is a possible cause or 2 separate problems? Thanks.

main brgs. will give a deep rumble  a vibration can be from so many other places

theres clutch and flywheel balance, valve timing, ignition timing,  valve clearances

and the list goes on , compression tests,  dizzy shaft wear , nasty electronic points replacements ,

engine mounts , exhaust contact,

I had similar on my Spit with the engine as you say "it happens at that point where it is neither pulling or slowing down" . I could not find the cause so decided to ignore it until it failed. 

Turned out to be no.4 big end bearing causing it.
