Hi,

I have just bought a 13/60 and it's engine number is RD1226ESS.

I am confused because RD is supposed to be 1300 FWD.

Can any one PLEASE help me understand this engine.

The engine blocks are the same, there is no problem building an engine for a herald using a 1300 fwd block herald crank etc or the other way. The engine number only tells you what it was when it left the factory not what it is today. It was also originally a new replacement 1300 fwd hence the ESS. I could build a 1300 engine into a 1500 block. After more than 50 years and numerous rebuilds the number tells you very little

Trouble is it makes it more difficult to know exact spec like compression, cam, valve sizes, crank bearing sizes etc but then for many of us these can have modified over the years...
