JohnMercer
Hello all, I have a Triumph Spitfire 1500 fitted with a J-Type overdrive. It was not original, I got it second hand about 30 years ago, it has worked without issues in all that time. I have just rebuilt the grearbox and decided to at least clean the hydraulic parts of the overdrive that I could access while it was out of the car. The pressure filter did not want to come out, it took a bit of force and wiggling. However, not all of the filter came out cleanly, it looks like the end cap (or whatever the terminology is) pulled away from the filter mesh and is now jammed in the overdive casing. I'm not familiar with what is underneath the filter and so do not want to dive in prising things around or drilling. Would anyone have a idea on how I can get the end cap out without doing more damage? Any help much appreciated regards, John
JohnD
Those are the dreaded "black hairy bits", a sign of wear and impeding failure of the cone clutch on the O'drive. In this case not very hairy, which could mean excessive wear. John
JohnMercer
Thanks for the reply JohnD, looks like I need to take the whole thing apart for examination. Any ides on getting the stuck part of the old filter out of the overdrive? John
JohnD
Afraid not. I've always referred gearbox/Od problems to a specialist. Mike Papworth is the man, although others are available. John
DanMi
speak to one of these 3 Mike Papworth https://www.facebook.com/mike.papworthtriumph , http://www.odspares.com, or https://www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk I would probably pull it out with long nose pliers and not worry about damaging the filter just replace it https://www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk/product/j-type-high-pressure-filter/ Edited May 6 by DanMi
johny
Doesnt look like theres much to get hold of! You might be able to start threading a suitable size bolt in the centre hole of the remaining filter end plate or hook something in to pull it out... JohnMercer
Thanks for your advice everyone, I think I will contact one or two of the specialists you listed DanMi. Found this worringing damage at the bottom of the recess for one of the piston cups. Put a bit of EP90 in it and it did not drain away, but does that actually mean the OD will work? No idea how the damage could have happened either, the thing was working fine before I took it out. I think this is a question for the specialists, way outside my area of expertise. JohnMercer
Quick update on the stuck filter plate in case anyone else has this problem. I filed a tent peg into the shape of a pick and could prise the plate out by eeking it between the plate and the casing. It than pinged out quite easily.
