Dished locking washers - Herald rear hatch / bootlid

Recommended Posts

Anyone got a source of these little guys, probably about 1/4" if available. I'm assuming, and have 'sort-of' experimented, that they started off dished and not flat. I'm using them on the Herald Estate rear hatch hinge screws, managed to find four as required but spares are always handy to have. Early days yet, I haven't really started searching but they're not listed in the Parts Manual or the online exploded diagrams, and any I've found online so far are flat not dished. I may be right that they're also used to hold the bootlid to the frame in other models of Herald and Vitesse but haven't confirmed that tonight (the four visible bolts on the vertical face of the bootlid) as there they may be solid, not locking. I'm not looking for concours but like to do things as original as possible.

Okay cancel my last, they were 1/4" and too large. I'm drawing a blank on the 3/16 size though. I've managed to discover that they were not only used on the rear hatch hinges, which I knew already, but also on the saloon bootlid to hold the frame, and now I've found they were also used on convertibles for the hood securing latches. Part 68 in the exploded diagram.

"Special Washer" doesn't tell me much but the fact that nearly all suppliers mark them as NLA does, and the ones that don't, usually don't list them at all.

Revington TR had the best description: "3/16 External tooth Countersunk Locking Washer." That gave me something to search for, but to our shame it seems there's only one source for these and that's America.

Quite a few suppliers over there, but NONE in either the UK or Europe. I can't believe it! I've tried most of the usual suppliers - Spaldings, Bresco, even McMaster-Carr and got no results. I'll keep trying, it's the challenge more than the end result.

Colin my Stromberg 150CD Viteese Mk2 Carbs with the choke enrichment addition uses 2 small countersunk lock washers with crosshead countersunk screws to hold it in place on the front carb. Maybe Carb specialists stock them?

Have you tried looking for Star Washers?

Pete

Having tried every other name of cupped washers, dished washers, bowl washers, lock washers, toothed washers, I just did... how does this new fangled M6 translate to Imperial?

M5 just a wee bit bigger. M5 .196, 3/16 .187. M4 is .157. I was a toolmaker, worked at a time when I was an apprentice  using English measurement  then everything went tits oops, I mean metric. You never forget though.
