Eric Smith
Hi guys Some of you might know all of this but others won’t so: A long time ago badge engineering reared it’s ugly head after the merger of Standard and Triumph - at that time, Standard wanted to give the UK a cheep new family car so they gave us in the UK the Standard 8, followed by the Standard 10 and an estate called the Standard Companion, they gave Triumph who’s sales were not doing so well the chance to supply the USA with a compact family “Sedan” and an “Estate Wagon” They called Sedan the TR10 which as you might guess was a rebadged Standard 10 and the TR10 Estate Wagon was a rebadged Companion. Betty: So boys and girls - I think my little Standard 8 called Betty, with her Herald 1100 engine heart, a number of other begged or paid for Triumph Spitfire and Herald bits and soon to have a new Triumph differential could actually think of herself as a “Standard Triumph 8/Herald” but definitely not a “TR 8” because she thinks that that would be ridiculous - actually she just prefers Betty. To be honest I think the TR designation was a step to many, but the Triumph badge was acceptable and don’t forget the great Stirling Moss drove and raced a Standard 8’s and 10’s (see photo) so there is a pedigree towards the TR status. I know that lots of bits off the Standard 8 and 10’s found their way into the Herald and early Spitfire so the Herald and Spitfire became little siblings of the Triumph TR10 (as well as the Standard 8, 10, Companion, Estate Wagon and the Pennant) Just a bit of history for you Ric 3
Colin Lindsay
A few years back - and sadly no longer - I had relatives in the vehicle graphics business who were well used to making me odd badges and stickers as one-offs; I had a Triumph-badged Maestro (to counter the MG version!) and other local members had personalised badges for their cars, too. You could always get a Triumph badge made up in the style of the original Standard version. In these days of home computing everything is possible! Steve P
I was on holiday in Lanzarote at the end of April and one of my books I took was A History of Standard and Triumph cars. Interesting reading on the progression from Standard to Triumph and the models that were made, worth a read. I normally take 3 or 4 books as I read fast and normally get through one a day. I took Danny Cipriani`s biography and a collection of Alan Bennet books which I love. Steve
Eric Smith
Hi Colin I love the idea of having some fake badges, that would be fun and they would more than upset a few people at a car show. I love old fashioned car stickers, they are well known to increase speed, power and performance by a huge amount, it’s been proven! One of the things I want to do is put a Nurburgring sticker on the back of my Standard when she is finished, just imagine the Nurburgring sticker along with one from the Ace Cafe, the Police would never do me for speeding they would be too busy laughing. Final thought, just imagine lots of classics speeding around the famous German race track at about 50mph in a long snaking convoy - you could bet any footage taken would be on the news and YouTube in minutes what a hoot! Steve P thanks for your message, I have to admit that I am not much of a book reader, I know I should be but I blame my dad, he read everything even labels and ingredients on packets, he tried to make me read, I dug my feet in and they are still stuck - sadly I never get to see the kind of book you read, I should really try. To both of you, thanks for the messages. Eric
JohnD
Yes, indeed! Let imagination run riot! The only association that this has with Triumph is that it tows one, my race Vitesse. And thar bears a 'Ring sticker although it's never been there, because it is 'Son of Silverback' that did, and ended its days there. May I refer you to the YouTube video, "The Last of the Silverback"? John Edited May 30 by JohnD

Eric I have dozens of these, made by the same relative many moons ago. Don't know if they'll still stick! They never made the red 1200 go any faster, tho. Steve P
True but if you watch the open sessions on YouTube courtesy and driving standards don't exist. S
