Eric Smith
Hi I have see your request on the SMC Forum, I was going to say this to you there - firstly I have never disassembled the rear axle off the Standard 8 or 10 so I am shooting from the hip. If you cannot find the half shaft you need, (I am not sure you will) you could look at half shafts off early Heralds or Spitfires - I know the rear end off a Herald is hugely different to our cars but I think the shaft diameters are the same, so you could talk to the boys here and look for an old unwanted Herald or Spitfire half shaft and hub then find a way to slave in the half shaft, hub and a bearing making a stub axle so that you can roll the car about? Better still, I am assuming you are going to fit a different rear axle, I think people have talked about Triumph Toledos as a donor but again I guess there are others you could choose - with that in mind why not sort out the axle replacement first then you don’t have to spend time looking for rare bits. I want to keep the axle I have, but I think if I was doing your restoration I would replace the axle then you are sorted! Eric
Stakeoutrecords
Thanks Eric that’s really helpful Steve at SMC has same idea to modify herald 1200 shaft might be easiest solution as same diameter, bearings and hub and relatively common I’ll put my feelers out for one, preferably with hub and other parts are early spitfires the same? thanks again stuart
Josef
Spitfire and Herald half shafts up to mid way through the MkIV (1974/5ish) are all the same. With the possible exception of really early Herald ones, I’m not too familiar there. What exactly do you want though Stuart? Or, I guess, which bits are you expecting to modify? And, which side if you’re intending to ever drive on it? The shafts wear, and are expensive new, so you’re probably not going to get a known roadworthy second hand one. You might get a ‘it’s likely good’ from a breaker (Spitbitz, Spitfire Graveyard etc), or completely unknown from e.g. eBay or maybe on here. Also, if you’re going to work on Herald rear hubs you will need the correct special hub puller as anything else is going to do damage (I do happen to have an extra one of these puller that I’ve still not got around to selling if you’d be interested). Eric Smith
Hi Steakout i just had a thought when you get around to scrapping the rear axle, let me know, as there might be a place in my stocks of bits for it. As to Herald Half Shafts I was talking to a guy named Mick Dolphin via email, I think he said he had Half Shafts mickdolphintriumph@gmail.com, if you don’t get anywhere on the forums or via contacts give this guy a try. Stakeoutrecords
All noted thanks again
Josef
Oh OK then! Mick Dolphin will sell you a good one, so don’t go that route if you’re going to cut it up I’d give Dave at the Spitfire Graveyard a call and ask if he’s got something that’s otherwise unsaleable. Otherwise you can get one for about £50 at the mo on ebay searching “spitfire rear hub”. If you had been a few weeks earlier I would’ve had an axle for you. I had a worn out one kicking around, but repurposed it as part of my DIY metal folder.
